HEAT (Parker Reed Series #1) by J. M. Walker

Reviewed by Sharon Thérèse Nuttall on behalf of Kindle Friends Forever.

heatThis is the first book I have read by this author and my first impression regarding this story was a little conflictive to say the least. I carried on reading. Fortunately, the plot is a solid one. I give a lot of importance to this as too many steamy scenes, and believe me when I say they abound; tend to bore me. Is this the case? Read on! Her characters’ personalities are strong, the setting is perfect, and even though I found the storyline a little repetitive at times, I liked it.

Keely. Despite annoying the hell out of me, her submissive tendencies were quite comprehensible. You’ll find out why she is like she is by reading on. An abusive relationship which started when she was in her teens has marked her for life. She breaks away from this and decides it’s about time to make a living. Look for a job. She can’t keep living under the wing of her bestie, Apart from being gay, Troy has been her salvation. Not only has he looked out for his dearest friend, his concern, his sense of humour, and his spontaneous quirky remarks, had me laughing out loud. A true friend. The banter between the two is well described and if anyone in this book made me say “chapeau”, it was definitely him.

The first electrical spark between the two protagonists is to be the backbone in this novel. Keely felt it as soon as she timidly walked into an interview for the job as personal assistant to Parker Reed. His savvy at such a young age had made him one of the most important entrepreneurs in the cut- throat business of wheeling and dealing. He is demanding. She realises this without a blink of an eye and complies; hardly any questions are asked. Blinking heck—this man is so Alpha that the pages lit up! Drop dead gorgeous, tattoos, piercings and rippling muscles are in all the right places, and will certainly have you grabbing for your fan. And if you haven’t got one…! He doesn’t have to convince Keely to his modus vivendi either. He wants her; she is inquisitive. She wants to please this man who has bombarded her feelings. Problem number one is her ex. Problem number two is she’s not forthcoming with a secret that could ruin a beautiful relationship. Say no more!

Let’s get back to Parker! He is a man who has had a past. His present is in danger and the last person that one would think could help him is Keely. She is a dab hand in hacking, and Parker’s minions trust her. Why? Because his word is law, his intuition and feelings for this beautifully damaged girl, stronger. The BDSM scenes were written with utmost detail, but spoilt by Parker’s endearments towards Keely which I found irritating. His protectiveness towards her comes over to the reader so very loud and clear that it made me wonder why there was so much fuss at the beginning of the story. I loved how Parker constantly warns her about his likes and dislikes, and the ending; phew! Never in a million years, was I ready for it!

A message to the author. There is no doubt whatsoever that you know how to dangle the carrot. If I have knocked off a star and a half, it’s because your brill plot didn’t need so much hot, steamy sex. It could have been so much more regardless!

When Delia (Lia) Norman meets Rock Royalty Colter (Colt) Slade unexpectedly after her boyfriend of 4 years breaks up with her, sparks fly immediately. Lia’s ex always told her she was dull and boring, she was no fun at all, and he was right. Colt tells Lia to do something exciting – be spontaneous. So she moves out of her comfort zone and goes on tour with the most famous rock group in the world ‘Slayed’.

How will Lia deal with being pushed out of her comfortable life and into a world of chaos, paparazzi, screaming ‘evil minion’ fans and most of all the idea that maybe there is love just around the corner?

This was a first time read for me with this author. Rock star meets rich girl. They fall in love and live happily ever after. Ahhh, but life is not all that you imagine it to be.

Delia Lia Norman, who lives in her own little bubble, has it all. She’s been living with her boyfriend, Joseph, for the last four years and thought her life was just hunky dory. Until the 14th of February, Valentine’s Day, when her boyfriend decided he no longer loved her or wanted to be with her.

Colter (Colt) Slade. Member of the rock group, Slayed. Bad boy rocker with a copious amount of women at his feet. Number one rock God. Looks like a rock god, and a handsome devil is he. A rocker that lives up to that old reputation that goes hand in hand with rock stars “sex, drugs, rock and roll.” And someone who has issues that date right back to his childhood.

Crying and distraught, Lia heads to a hotel which is owned by her father for the night to lick her wounds and to get thoroughly plastered. In the room next door is the rock group, Slayed. Through her anguish and tears there’s a knock at her door. There stands Colt. Lia has absolutely no idea who he is, what he is, or what he does; however, this doesn’t stop her from telling him her complete life story. And ladies and gentleman, this is where this love story begins.

Colt decides it’s time for Lia to go out into the world and experience life. Her first stop, a rock concert. Lia is introduced to the rest of the band and the bands groupies called the Slayettes. One particular Slayette is giving her the evil eye as she has had several encounters with Colt and claims him as her property. This doesn’t bode well with Lia and brings out her insecurities.
The connection between Lia and colt is apparent as soon as you start reading this book. Feelings grow and prosper, and Lia makes the decision to tour with the band so they can be together. Their love for each other is so intense that when they argue, Lia completely zones out and her actions tend to make me worry for her health. An unexpected event occurs which calls Lia home and makes Colt think she’s never coming back to him. Colt then takes himself down the path of total destruction. Only Lia can save him from himself.

I’m trying very hard not to give too much away with this review as I do not wish to spoil it for others. As a die-hard fan of “Rocker” books, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. My hat’s off to the author for a story well written. And a love affair that was so intense at times I felt quite jealous! As for the ending, Author K E Osborn… Are you off your rocker? Lol! Impatiently waiting for book two.

K E Osborn hid the fact that she was writing from her family, as she believed her first story was simply something she had to get on paper first and then judge if it was good enough for others to read. It wasn’t until her mother found a printed version of the manuscript that her secret came out. She was a writer, and she loved it. Writing gives her life purpose. Nia Martins believes a fresh start will help her leave her traumatic past behind. Moving to a different country, she seeks to shake off her demons by doing the one thing that sets her free from her destructive thoughts – teaching dance. But change doesn’t come easy, and all Nia really wants is to take the next breath without the perpetual suffocation that follows.

Reeves Mitchell has looked death in the eyes so many times it’s become habitual. That is, until his best friend’s life was on the line. When the one thing he feared the most turns into reality, all he can do is pick up the pieces of his loss. As Reeves tries to live with the constant thought of “what if” gnawing at the back of his mind, he persistently and steadily builds a thick wall around himself.

Their solitary lives are all they have—until fate brings them together. Nia and Reeves’ new friendship helps make life, shadowed by the ghosts of their past, more bearable. But as their relationship deepens and new, suppressed feelings emerge between them, are they willing to retrace their steps back to where wounded hearts can be broken once more?

RETRACE COVERnI was sucked into this story from the first line of the prologue. So much so that I quickly realised this author is an expert in dangling the carrot! She certainly fooled me because I expected something totally different. A good read needs a solid storyline, and Retrace not only offered what I was looking for, it also promised a brilliant ending. I was not in the least bit disappointed.

Two lost souls, Nia and Reeves, rule in this book full of emotions! Hurt and guilt; emotions totally out of their control, consume them. However, destiny plays a trump card when an inopportune circumstance throws them together. What I enjoyed most in this book was their humour. It abounds in such a well written story that the author made me cry with laughter; she made me cry while living their pain, too.

Loss is a difficult thing to overcome and both Reeves and Nia have their own way of coping with it. Honesty is held back. Why? Because they aren’t ready to open up their hearts to each other. But when these two beautiful people do, they have to learn to trust. And this is basically what Retrace is about. Trust and acceptance. Going back to the basics and coming to terms with what had happened is the root. And certainly not of all evils because they are made for each other.

Nia is where she is because she wants to move on. Teaching dance away from home to youngsters is what she loves; is her way of escaping her unfounded guilt. After Reeves and Nia’s chance meeting, he will see her in action. Not only is he literally spellbound by her enrapturing movements, but you will also be left with your mouth open. Yeah! There are hot, sexy scenes which will have you grabbing for you fan. At least I did!

Reeves. G.I. Joe! Nooooo, no, no! This man is much more. This is a man living in his private hell! Living in the present is awfully hard for him. This guilt-ridden man is absolutely mouth-wateringly gorgeous. Not only is he on a mission of sorts, he is also running a bar with his brother in arms, Jake. I would really like the author to consider telling Jake’s story, too! I fell for Jake’s ex who really isn’t his ex at all! What a character and a half! No, it’s not that confusing. If you read their story, every piece in this jigsaw puzzle fits perfectly into its place. Reeves isn’t as daft as I thought at the beginning of this story, and Nia mustn’t be disregarded because of her weaknesses. She’s cautious, sensual and loving. Trusting! You will see only by reading a story which had me stuck to the pages throughout.

A message to Ms. Ehrlich; you have written a worthy read. And in first person too, which I consider a difficult feat to pull off. I loved all the characters that revolved around your protagonists who tell their point of view chapter by chapter, and I sincerely hope that you have more to offer. Bravo!

COUNTING STARS: A Donnelley Brother’s Novel (Donnelley Brothers #1) by ALANNAH CARBONNEAU

Counting Stars is an emotionally charged romance about love and loss – and learning to live after everything you’ve lived for has died.

I was with him for six years. Derek was my life, my future, and my dream come true. We had it all – the house, the cars, rings on our fingers, and we were even discussing a baby. Derek was my high school sweetheart, my lover, and my best friend.

Derek is dead.

At only twenty-two years old I am a widow. I’ve spent the last year of my life filtering through self-help books – searching for a way to heal the remnants of my heart.

I am broken.

It is my incessant searching that leads me to booking a month long trip with The Donnelley’s Wild Land Tour’s. I was supposed to tour with Gracie – but she is incapacitated and she’s left me in Logan’s care. If I could, I would turn and walk away from this tour. But I can’t. This is my last chance at learning to live again.

Logan doesn’t know I’m broken. When he looks at me, I feel strong again. I feel alive. He pushes me to learn new things, to experience new ways, and to fight. Logan, in all his bluntness has taught me to fight for what I want and what I believe in. I don’t know how it happened, but Logan picked up the pieces of my heart and helped me to rebuild it. In him, I’ve found acceptance in the hardest thing I had to face.

We all have a path, and for me, my path has been beautifully painful. I was fated; both blessed and cursed, to love two men with the entirety of my heart. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a day, because the pain of the lost life I had with Derek led me to the beautiful present I cherish with Logan.

What a book! If I could have given it ten stars, I would have. Don’t you feel there are times when a good story touches you deeply? Well, that’s the case with this book. It is a beautiful read from start to finish.

Derek and Reese were each other’s first. They were school sweethearts, got married, and were happy. Until that fateful day when it was all taken from her. Derek left her in a way which only left Reese with a constant feeling of pain and guilt. Now she is trying to find her way through her agony, trying to cope with her loss. She comes across an article; The Donnelley’s Wild Land Tours. Not only is it just what she needs, but she also strikes up an email friendship with Gracie. They discuss what she needs on the tour, and Gracie agrees to be her guide for a month while living together out in the wild. However, Reese arrives to find Gracie unable to take her, and this is where Logan, Gracie’s son, steps in. Faced with a month alone, with a man she doesn’t know, or the option to go home, means she has to make a decision.

Logan loves the country. He is quiet, moody; doesn’t like to talk much and listens less! His tolerance level for city people is zilch, so when he first meets Reese, he is rude and arrogant. Despite carrying his own hurt, he sees something else in her. He has no idea what Reese is going through but knows she is running from something. Sparks fly! The attraction and banter between them is nothing less than brilliant.

Reese eventually opens up to Logan telling him about her life. They give into their feelings for each other, and their relationship moves forward. Logan realises he wants more than friendship with Reese. He wants her —all of her. Slowly but surely, they are both healing each other. She’s discovering new sentiments; Logan is on her mind and creeping into her heart. Can she overcome her guilt and fear of the past? Can he tackle his problems? And above all, what will happen when the tour comes to an end —will loss prevail?

I’m not going to say any more about this story as it will give far too much away. I will say that this is a highly emotional read told to perfection by an extremely sensitive author. She has done an amazing job by pulling you into Reese and Logan’s world. I really connected to both protagonists; their pain, their joy, their heartache. Despair and being totally lost but finding someone who makes you want to live again. The love scenes between them are beautifully written. Sometimes sweet and tender, other times hot and passionate. There’s also some great supporting characters. Kat, Reese’s bestie, Logan’s parents, Gracie and John, and his brothers are all fantastic. I’m sure Logan’s brothers each have a story to tell which I can’t wait for! I have to admit that I shed a few tears while reading Alannah. You have written such moving and heartfelt words making me instantly connect with Reese. The prologue was truly moving and the wording so real had me crying before I got going with the rest of the book! Looking forward to the follow-up.

I live in Alberta, Canada, where the weather is forever changing (without warning). I am engaged to be married in August 2015 to my high school sweetheart and love of my life. There are no children in my life as of right now, but we do have a handful of rambunctious cats (four) and a testy, rescued Shepard/Husky, who take up a lot of my time.

Ever since I can remember, I’ve adored the written word. English was always my favorite class and that may be biased because I can’t count to save my life, so math was a horror! I remember the very first novel I ever read, Shocking Pink by Erica Spindler. It was the most interesting of the covers on my mom’s bookshelf (probably because it was pink) and I was way too young to be reading that novel. But I fell in love. From there, I read almost everything from V.C. Andrews.

My writing started out as poetry, which then evolved to songs, and later into novels. I was never one for the short stories as I found it too difficult to pack everything I imagined into something so small. I now have fourteen novels published independently. I write both novels for young adults and novels for adults – all romance.

Despite my favorite younger reading material, I now adore writing and reading all things romance.

“Your forfeit for you losing Miss Marshall is that you are to kiss, no snog the face off the next man who comes through those pub doors.” Every single one of our party, including me, turn to face the dreaded doors. The feeling of expectation has just trebled and shot through the roof.

“You’re joking, right? What if it’s an eighteen year-old student? My job would be on the line or even worse, I’d be classed as a cougar!” My voice ends on a shrill as the realisation of what I’ve got to do sinks in.

“Come on Marshall, I’m sure your forfeit for me had I lost would have been far worse.” Actually he’s probably not wrong there. Having him rub a red-hot chili over his hands and then telling him to wank himself sounds more and more appealing. Next time Rushton, next time.

I rest my head in my hands dreading every second of this and as to who will be the next male to walk in here. Please don’t let it be some old geezer either. I groan through my fingers. The silence is deadly as the wait begins. I wish someone would bloody talk to break the drought of conversation, it may just lead to a distraction and then me not having to do it, or at least them remembering when a hot looking Professor walks in.

Actually scratch that thought, as the image of Marc Sanders is now firmly imprinted on my brain. I can hear the laughs from Isabel now, as she most probably would have read my mind. I look up when I hear an over exaggerated intake of breath come from Melissa and once again all eyes are fixed on the doorway.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me!” The words are out of mouth before I can even put my brain into first gear.

Meet the Author:

A J Walters is a contemporary romance author and an Amazon #1 Bestseller in Women’s Fiction. Having interests in history, romance and elements of erotica, she has brought all of these together in her debut publications; The Attraction Series.

Wanting to break the trend of size 12 virgins in books, A J Walters has introduced a new real woman in Isabel Chambers. She’s a size 18-20, working single mother who now feels is it her time to start living her life again. At the ripe young age of 39 (at time of writing 1st book), A J Walters also wanted to show that you can experience everything that a twenty-something would.

“I saw that a 39 year old isn’t quite at retirement age for fun, sex and finding love again. There are so many women out there that can be represented in books as well as the slim, innocent and beautiful types. Don’t get me wrong I love reading books with them in, but there is so many of them around now I felt is was time for something different. I’d like to think I brought my sense of humour across in it as well. I am ditsy, I suffer from ‘foot in mouth’ syndrome, but I can also be serious and sentimental. From the feedback I’ve had, apparently it makes for a great writing voice.”

A J Walters has since gone on to publish 2 books in The Attraction Series; An Acute Attraction and A Constant Attraction. There is a 3rd book in the pipeline, which is expected to be published in January 2015.

As well as writing this series of books, she has also written a short story for a summer anthology and is now an Amazon #1 Bestseller in Women’s Fiction for her publication of Lust, Love, Dreams and Heartache: A book of romantic and erotic poetry.

Reviewed By Donna Elsegood on behalf of Kindle Friends Forever.

NO REGRETS COVERThis is the long awaited second book of The Firebird series and I for one, was very pleased to receive a copy to review one of my favourite author’s work. The story follows on from book one with Rebecca nursing a broken heart. Rebecca is an Australian who works for Maxwell Grant. She was working in France where she had a love affair with Frenchman Alain which ended abruptly. Now Rebecca is working in Germany, and seems to be on a self-destruct mission going from bar to bar drinking herself into oblivion. It is in one of these bars where she befriends barman, Kurt. Studying to become a doctor, there is a connection between them but not a romantic one.

Maxwell is an astute businessman. Even though he wants Rebecca, he has his own set of complications which does not bode well with her. However, she has an attraction towards him. Max summons her to New York for a charity event. She stays at his house where he makes it clear how much he wants to be with her. But Rebecca is in a dilemma! Why she is reluctant is something that I cannot reveal in the review since it would give away what we have learned about Max in Lost In France. Rebecca does what she does best and runs straight backs to Germany. She also hands in her notice as she cannot work for Max with this constant attraction and his baggage. She feels it is an impossible situation and the only way to resist the temptation is to get as far away as possible.

Alain is still in France, still wants to Rebecca, but something of utmost importance has been brought to his attention by his father. If he had known this before, a heart-breaking split-up could have been avoided. So with this in mind, he decides to go to Germany to claim the only woman he has ever really loved. Rebecca is the object of two men wanting her at the same time and makes life very difficult. Max stays away from her so he can resolve his personal issues, and in the meantime, Rebecca is happy to find out that her baby sister, Lily, is coming to Germany to celebrate Rebecca’s impending 30th birthday.

We are introduced to some new characters I’d eventually like to see side stories of. Lily, Rebecca’s baby sister, and her other younger sister, the flighty Chloe who certainly intrigued me. Not forgetting the handsome German Dr Kurt.

There a lot of twists and turns in this brilliant book which obviously I’m not going to spoil for you. It involves love lost, love found, and a tragically violent event that shapes the story. Rebecca’s world is spinning out of control, only making me more than impatient to read the next instalment. I have no idea what will happen, or if this incredible story will end how I would like it to. I do know as a reviewer, I have to be impartial; as a reader I confess that my loyalty lies with Max. Very well done Jani! You have offered your readers a really enjoyable read.
