From bestselling author Jodi Ellen Malpas comes a new novella in the This Man series. You don’t need to read the series to enjoy this story, but if you’re already a Jesse Ward fan, just wait till you see the advice he gives Drew about falling in love.

I thought I had control. I was so, so wrong…

I don’t need a relationship. I have Hux, a decadent club where I quench whatever raw desire I choose. I take pleasure and I give it – no strings attached. So when Raya Rivers comes in asking for someone cold, emotionless, and filthy… well, no man ever takes his wicked pleasure quite the way I do.

Only Raya is different. Vulnerable. And carrying some deep sorrow that gets past all my carefully constructed walls and inexplicably makes me care. Now craving controls me. Ice has given way to red-hot need.

But Raya has no idea about my other life – my real life. That I’m daddy to an adorable little girl. My two worlds are about to collide with the force of a supernova. Once Raya knows the truth, will she be able to accept all I am?

“Jesus Christ, this woman could be my downfall. Could make me forget all that I am.”

The This Man trilogy is probably one of our all-time favourites. Therefore, you can imagine how excited we were to hear Ms Malpas was going to release a spin-off of the series and even better, we’d have the opportunity of meeting up with Jesse again. Of course, this little gem of a read wouldn’t be the same without Drew’s other die-hard friend, Sam, who’s as willing as Jesse to give their pal some advice about hmm… his nocturnal preferences. We honestly felt as if we were eavesdropping on their conversation which we have to say had us grinning from ear to ear. If we didn’t know the author was female, we’d think she was a fella because she certainly writes like one, thinks like one and blinkin’ heck; her leading man’s character was spot on! In fact, one of the most common pitfalls when narrating a story in first-person present tense is the reader’s given too much minutiae of everyday life. This never happened. Drew’s inner-thoughts are told in some very clipped sentences which we found all male. No matter how mundane his actions, we were mesmerised by them. Even when he’s a tad confused about his feelings, he tries to reason with himself and tries to get straight to the point without much ado.

“I hardly know anything about you.”

“Like I said, this isn’t a date. All you need to know is that I have a cock and I have ability, and with them I can blow your mind.”

One thing is for sure, even though Drew’s knocking on a bit; we wouldn’t dream of telling him that because he’d be more than offended, he still has no wish to change his lifestyle. Drew learnt the hard way when life threw him a curve-ball of such magnitude that the last thing on his mind is settling down. His mates have, his happy for them but it’s not even on his overflowing agenda. Actually, there is someone very special he’d do absolutely anything for, but isn’t the person who will bring him to his knees.

You’re attracted to me.

Although you’re a little older than I expected.

Ouch.

From the very beginning of his story, he’d made it very clear to us what he wanted, so we weren’t quite sure how he’d react to what was about to happen. You see, the author had other ideas for this drop-dead gorgeous alpha by not only spicing things up in the bedroom, but also complicating his very existence. The way Drew coped with his feelings was incredibly realistic and not surprisingly, he tried to fight against them. After what he’d been through, it was easy for us to understand why he’d always steered clear of emotional entanglements. No lovey-dovey, no strings, no drama. Just hot kinky sex!

“… I’m mad to question my decision.”

“Why?”

“Because if you don’t have anyone, you can’t lose anyone.”

Up until now, both of us had been enthralled with what we’d read; however, when Raya walked into the scenario is when it got really interesting. What she wants from him tickles his fancy, fits perfectly into his no romantic ties beliefs, but does open up his curiosity. You know what they say about curiosity, well. . . say no more!

“I’m a man touching forty and for the first time in my life, I’m in tatters over a woman. You, Raya.”

We are suckers for age gaps! Although Raya is quite a bit younger than Drew, we found her mature enough to connect with him on a deeper level. Nonetheless, it was a level she didn’t want for reasons to be revealed and would cause them both distress. Yet her sadness is a mystery, its routes he has to discover regardless of everything he’d shunned in the past. If a carrot had been dangled in front of his nose, he wouldn’t have been able to stop himself!

“Sweet? I’ve been described as many things, but sweet isn’t one …”

Ms Malpas’ descriptive writing is as such that she left us captivated and we can’t not mention the witty and hilarious interactions between Drew, Sam, Jesse and the adorable character we can’t mention. It has us in fits and tucks! We love banter in our reads and as usual this author did not disappoint. It was great to see such a fun side to Drew because in previous books he came over somewhat surly. He’d always stood in the background and both of us felt a little cheated we didn’t get to know him a little better. This book not only gave us Drew, but also gave us a glimpse into the lives of Jesse, Ava, Sam and Kate and for that Ms Malpas, we would like to say thank you. Bravo!

Blurb:

Vasilije Markovic is the prince of the Serbian mafia and one of the most powerful men in Chicago. His smile may be razor sharp, but he’s crueler than the devil.

I’m playing a dangerous game and betting my life I’m going to win. I pretend to be his pawn. I do as he says and move where he tells me, letting him think he’s in control as I position myself for revenge.

Every turn brings us closer. His grin doesn’t seem as evil when we’re alone. Behind closed doors, I welcome his unrelenting and vicious personality. He’s confessed all his secrets, but I’m holding one back and it’s a game changer.

If I survive the board, this pawn turns into a queen. I become the most powerful player and send all the other pieces running. To get what I want, I must make sacrifices, but am I willing to draw the line at him?

I hadn’t realised that Torrid was book two of the Sordid series, it made no difference as this felt like a I was reading a standalone. The first book is about the brother Luka, in hindsight I probably should have read it first, but the author managed to give enough information on his story so I didn’t feel like I had missed anything, nor really spoilt the first book in any great detail should I decide to go on to read it. I’ve read Nikki Sloane only once previously, quite some time ago, I wasn’t familiar with her writing style and it was like reading a new author. The cover is attention grabbing, crisp and clear and I like it is kept in black and white.

Initially I was drawn in by the blurb, the theme is one of my favourite genres to read. I’m always looking for a unique twist to the story, something that sets the book apart, and while I believe the author has tried this, I don’t think it read so far differently from other books. I liked the musical theme running through the story and this lent for a little bit of difference but otherwise – this was an okay read for me.

I struggled with the beginning; the prologue and the first few chapters. I felt the author was trying a little too hard with her analogies, it made for some reading issues for me. To me analogies should roll off the tongue, sound natural, but I came across a couple that read in a complex manner which meant the flow of the story didn’t run as smoothly as I would have liked, and I had to re-read a paragraph or two for them to sound better. There was also the repetition of a few words, which by the end of the book had me gritting my teeth. There are more words to use than evil and cruel, I would have liked to have seen these two words used less. As for Nikki Sloane’s writing style, once I was comfortably in the story I did enjoy it, easy enough to read and had a decent amount of depth a reader can relate to.

Character wise, Torrid gives you an alpha bad boy that the ladies love to love – Vasilije Markovic. Oh yeah, this guy is a law unto himself, and a total asshole of seismic proportions. He doesn’t care about very much except the idea of blood and revenge, and a little bit of filthy, detached sex. He’s not a man one falls in love with. He rattles about his big, old house, plotting and plotting, and is quite rude in all the wrong ways. Vasilije is a well written character, there’s no disputing that, but I wonder if the author intentionally made him seem like a boy playing at a man. That’s the overriding impression I got from him, some of his actions were immature and churlish but fitted him to a tee in all honesty. He comes across sometimes as intimidating, with a foreboding manner but I think the overuse of the words previously mentioned spoilt the characteristics trying to be conveyed. Oksana had a heart of stone, seemingly complimenting Vasilije and egging him on in his worst moments. She had her own story which quietly unravels in the background until it’s too hard to hide. I didn’t think her big reveal was all that amazing but it suited where it landed in the story. Together these characters are a formidable force and Oksana ultimately wins her reward two-fold when the empire falls.

There’s some kink in here for the readers that like that kind of thing, some very good action scenes too. The suspense angle felt diluted in places but there is still enough to keep a reader guessing a while and wondering what’s on the horizon. In terms of a dark read, for someone like me it was gritty in places but not stomach curdling, the dark elements are tame in comparison with some other books of the same genre. I think this was a four-star read once I got over the hump at the beginning. I’d recommend it, especially if you want something fluid and fast paced with a lot steam thrown in.

The mere fact that I pulled an all-nighter just goes to show how much I liked this standalone in the Oxford series. And even though the narrative is in third person past tense…not a favourite storytelling technique of mine, I still couldn’t put it down. I really liked the way the author began the book. Substituting the prologue for a flashback and then how back months led up to the first chapter was more than original. This writing strategy put me in the female protagonist’s story and of course, learning how she felt about her new surroundings and who she’d be working with helped give the book that office ambience. But I’ll get back to that later, for now I have to say how much I liked the author’s character development and although the premise of the story is not new (shacking up novels are noticeably trendy at the moment), I was kept glued to the pages. I’ve read a couple of her books, one of them being in this standalone series; however, this one has something that really stands out, the banter.

“Taylor here wants to share her original crown molding with someone.”

“Yes, it seems I unexpectedly have a free bedroom and more rent than I can afford. If either of you knows anyone looking for a roommate. . . “

Two people who cannot tolerate each other have an awful lot to say to each other when they’re together! It’s a cat and mouse game which could have easily run out of steam and worn the reader out, but fortunately this wasn’t the case. Even though I found the build up a tinsy-winsy slow, the author literally took me where she wanted pacing the story to a climax worth waiting for. If there was one thing that irritated me, it was at the beginning of the story when the usage of the adverb / adjective ‘far’ in its conjunctive form kept popping up. I think with the help of a thesaurus, this could have easily been avoided. Still, this setback didn’t spoil Taylor Carr, Nick Ballantine and I have to say it but please don’t get the wrong idea, Bradley Calloway’s story. I wouldn’t have mentioned Bradley but he plays an important part in what is by no means a love triangle, more like a hate triangle with a difference. It’s a bit like you can’t have your cake and eat it too, which gives that added touch of interest to the main protagonists’ story.

“I already have enough going on in my life without adding in the effort of not getting arrested for killing you.”

“Too much going on. . . like what, Carr, you’re thriving love life?”

Nick’s lovable. He’s also drop-dead gorgeous and more important, a real do-gooder. So why Taylor gets his hackles up is an interesting concept because she’s not who he thinks she is. She’s tough on the outside and a real softy on the inside. Like me, he just had to see that part of her and I’m quite sure half our problem was solved in one very touching scene. If I were saddened to see her in such a state, Nick was even worse than me. But we both came round slowly. How could we not? Taylor’s feisty, quick-witted and can stand up for herself. That’s the way she’s been taught, never to show others her weaknesses. What makes her one of those book characters you know you’re never going to forget quickly or if at all, are those very weaknesses. The author’s character development is exceptionally good, but she’s gone to town with Taylor’s traits.

“Taylor’s complicated?”

“Hell yes,”

“All women are complicated,”

“True,”

I didn’t care for Bradley. And I’m very happy to say Nick didn’t either. In fact, no one in the office cared for him. An office where I might add, gossip thrives to such an extent that nothing is sacred. Yet I couldn’t help feeling a tad sorry for him. He knows what he’s done, how he did it was abominable and he still thinks he can do no wrong. Yep, dear ol’ Brad certainly rattled my cage, the sly so-and-so.

“I think . . . I made a mistake, and -”

“Which time?”

So let’s get back to Nick. I was cheering for him throughout the read. I had high hopes for him and I’d be damned if I can tell you whether he triumphed or not because I really would put my foot in it. You see, we’re talking about two people constantly clashing and who don’t want to back down. Little does Taylor know though. Nick has more experience with the ways of women than she’d ever bargain for and it’s not what you’re thinking. Ms Layne’s construed some engaging secondary characters who entertained me no end with their office banter, bitching, yes men do bitch, and comebacks in some really good laugh out loud scenarios. I can’t say how pleased I was to see Taylor with a four-legged friend; nonetheless, the reasons behind her having a pet weren’t exactly sad, just heart-warming. And the twist; blinkin’ marvellous, no way was I prepared for it! Maybe it’s me being greedy but I thought the ending lacked detail. I’m not saying I didn’t like it, I did, I just wanted more. This read is light on angst, so easy to read, realistic and so unputdownable. Bravo Ms Layne!

Punched is a second chance MMA sports romance surrounding the lives of Noah Nolan and Reagan Collins. Four years ago, the two seemed to be hopelessly in love, however Noah was working towards progressing with his fighting and Reagan was heading for college. Not wanting to hold her back he lets her go breaking her heart in the process.

Four years later and Noah is working towards championship status and being trained hard by Reagans father Jimmy at the gym. To his surprise, the one that got away is back after qualifying with a business degree to help run the gym is none other than Reagan. She seems to act indifferent to him and he can’t afford distractions with the most important fight that’s imminent.

Noah is a strong alpha as you would expect from a MMA fighter, but he has this deep sensitive romantic side to him making him totally swoon worthy. I had a feeling there had to be more to him giving up Reagan to just solely focus on his fighting then what we are led to believe. He seemed to have some hidden feelings about his life growing up that he kept well hidden.  Reagan is beautiful, intelligent, and full of sass not to mention strong, which probably is more to do with being surrounded by fighters at her dad’s gym through her growing up. Being around each other again certainly brings the old feelings for each other back to the surface showing they never really went away.

“No matter how much I miss you, we won’t happen.”

“Everything is riding on this fight and I can’t afford to blow this opportunity.”

Throughout this book there is chemistry and passion between the two even if they do try to deny it, but it’s there waiting to ignite fully. The story is told in dual point of view which is always a favourite of mine. What I enjoyed is the flashbacks to four years ago when things were so right but went drastically wrong to the build-up of present day. It’s clear they are made for each other but too stubborn to admit it.

One year ago, this author made his debut. Eighth book along and the writing has gone from strength to strength. The author has a way with words that reels you in from the first page right to the end. The creation of likeable characters, captivating storylines, and the ability to always throw in a surprise or two makes me keep wanting to read what’s offered again and again. The indie world is a particularly competitive market but with a diverse ability to tell a good story there’s something for everyone. Kudos to the author for another great story.

I have to admit that when the chance came up for me to review this book I jumped at it. Both ladies are great authors and I have enjoyed their own books immensely and this joint collaboration did not disappoint.

Chase Kelly is a 30 something Hot and I mean extremely hot, charismatic, handsome and drop dead panty soaking chunk of gorgeousness. I could carry on but I think you get my drift ;). He is an upstanding member of the community and also a police officer.

And we all love a man in uniform! Right ?

Livia Ward is the local librarian who has come to the realisation that her 30th birthday is fast approaching and the panic is beginning to set in.

She decides she wants a baby but no husband or relationship. She needs a sperm donor. Enter Chase Kelly.

When Chase and Livia first met there was an instant attraction. Love at first sight?

Hell No! It was pure greedy lust. Just the kind I like .

Chase asks her out on a date and she readily agrees. And this my friends, is where the story takes a turn. Livia wants Chase to be her sperm donor and he agrees. Shocked you may be, but he wants her so bad, he will agree to anything.

He doesn’t want a relationship either but what he does want is sex on tap and she agrees to this stipulation in the contract.

It all starts out quite business like but along the way feelings change. They can’t keep their hands off each other so you know the pregnancy test is going to come up positive sooner rather than later.

What I loved about this book was that we had points of view from both characters.

The reasons why neither one of them wanted commitment, their fears and how they will overcome them. How will they react when they discover that things are more complicated when feelings become involved? I’ve tried not to give too much away in this review but I highly recommend this book for your next read. You will not be disappointed. I truly loved this book; it was well written with a great storyline.

I  look forward to a collaboration between these two authors hopefully in the future as together they are dynamite.

Congratulations ladies on a well deserved 5 stars. If I could have given you more than 5, I surely would have.

Excerpt:

I’m at the steakhouse fifteen minutes early, which is on time in Chase Kelly’s book. I’ve never been late for work or a date a single time in my life; in fact, I’ve always been early, which is a point of pride for me. And Livia walks in at seven on the dot, something that endears me to her immensely, although the moment I register that I, Officer Kelly, am charmed, my mind goes blank.

Just blank.

There is nothing but her.

She walks in on heels that make her legs a mile long, her long hair down in a tumult of soft waves. The maître d’ helps her take off her checkered wool coat, and then I.

Am.

Speechless.

My heart hammers up in my throat as the blood pools deep in my groin. She’s wearing a bright red dress—so fucking short that I’d be able to finger her easily if we were in a booth, which we tragically aren’t. The red sets off the warm undertones of her bronze skin, highlights the deep brown of her eyes. The lines of it hug the delectable curves of her tits, which are just small enough that she can get away without wearing a bra.

My cock thickens as she begins walking toward me, and I can verify that she is definitely not wearing a bra. Oh God, what if she’s not wearing panties either?

I bite back a groan and push back my chair to greet her as she comes to our table, tugging the hem of my sweater down in one smooth move as I unfold myself to help disguise the effect her presence has on me.

As I step forward to greet her, I notice the color high in her cheeks and the way her teeth dig into the soft coral of her bottom lip.

She looks nervous.

That gives me pause. I don’t mind a woman meeting me cold or shy or overly eager, I don’t even mind a case of the first date jitters—since first dates are pretty much all I go on, I see a lot of those.

But nervous—truly nervous—that bothers me a little. Do I make her feel unsafe? Is it my size? My job?

In a split second, I change gears. I can be patient when it comes to the Kelly Trio, and I find that the idea of wooing my nervous little librarian on date after date doesn’t sound tiresome at all…it sounds delightful, actually. A challenge. A test to see if I’m worthy enough to remove all traces of trepidation from her face and fill her expression with eagerness and surrender instead.

And get more time with this fierce, sweet bookworm all to myself.

I lean in to kiss her cheek, careful to angle our bodies so that I don’t press against her with six feet, two hundred pounds of hungry cop. Instead, I anchor her with a firm hand at her elbow, pleased to feel the goose bumps that spread underneath my touch. And then I brush my lips against her cheek, making sure she can feel them, making sure she gets just the tiniest brush of my scruff as I accidentally-on-purpose slide my jaw against hers as I pull away.

She shivers.

I look down into her eyes as I straighten up, and I’m suddenly aware that I’m supporting a lot of weight in my hand, as if her knees are weak from my kiss.

Well done, Officer Good Times!

Her eyes are wide, the pupils so blown and her irises so dark that her eyes are just huge liquid wells of want, and I feel a familiar tug in my groin knowing that I put that look there.

“I forget how big you are,” she murmurs, her head tilted up to look into my face.

I give her my biggest grin and open my mouth, but she cuts me off before I can say it, shaking her head. “I know, I know. I walked right into that one.”

But the ghost of a smile flits across her lips as I help her into her seat and push in her chair.

When I sit across from her and we start looking at our menus, I notice the smile has vanished and the nervous look is back, along with a determined set to her shoulders. The combination of uneasiness and backbone intrigues and worries me at the same time.

“I don’t know what Megan told you,” I say, “but I don’t bite.”

She looks up from the menu, her teeth back to digging into the plump flesh of her bottom lip.

“Well,” I amend, staring at her mouth, “sometimes I do bite. But only when I really, really want to.”

HOT COP FOR TOUR

About Laurelin:

USA Today and New York Times Bestselling Author Laurelin Paige is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. She’s also a proud member of Mensa International though she doesn’t do anything with the organization except use it as material for her bio. She is represented by Rebecca Friedman.

You have the right to remain sexy.

Anything you say can and will be used to get you in my bed.

You have the right to use my body to give yourself a delirious, life-changing orgasm.

If you have trouble…don’t worry, I’m a bit of an expert in that department.

There’s nothing ‘thin’ about my blue line, if you catch my drift, and trust me, I know how to put those handcuffs to good use.

***

Livia Ward wants a baby before she’s thirty. And even though Officer Chase Kelly is exactly the kind of cocky jerk this librarian has sworn off, he is undeniably hot. Both of them think they can give each other what they want–a few nights of fun for Officer Kelly, a no-strings baby for Livia–but this hot cop is about to learn that sex, babies, and love don’t always play by the rules.

SYNOPSIS:

Can you fall for someone you’ve never even met?

Hailey Taylor Emery has a hunch that her favorite client at Fetch–an anonymous virtual assistant service–is actually hockey star Matt Eriksson.

Although it’s against the rules for her to check his file, she’s 95% sure she spends at least part of each day texting with her lifelong crush and catering to his every need. Still nursing a wounded heart thanks to her recent breakup, Hailey is perfectly content with some harmless online flirting…until she has to meet her client. Face to face. Cue: utter panic.

Matt Eriksson is no stranger to heartbreak. He’s still not over the destruction of his marriage, and it sucks to be the only guy on the team who knows the truth–that hockey and long-term relationships are a toxic mix. He barely sees his kids, and dealing with his ex makes him feel insane. The only person in his life who seems to understand is someone who won’t show her pretty face.

But it’s nothing that a pair of fourth row hockey seats can’t fix. Hailey can’t resist the offer. Matt can’t resist Hailey. Good thing he doesn’t have to. Fire up the kiss cam!

Warning: Contains rabid hockey fans, misunderstood dick pics, hockey players at the opera and exploding ovaries.

5 Stars ~ Reviewed by Rachel & Sharon Thérèse

Talk about perfect timing! We are definitely mood readers here at KFF and this one appeared at a time when we were both itching to read funny and sexy! These authors are a very talented writing duo and never fail to entertain us with their witty prose. We have devoured all their hockey stories and love that they keep providing us with such amusing and delightful characters. This is the second book in the WAGs series which is a spin off from the Him series (m/m) and although they can be read as standalones we highly recommend you read them in order to fully understand all the characters’ stories.

“… maybe I can convince you to kiss me again. I’m right here, honey. Come get me.”

Matt Eriksson is a thirty year old hockey player who is newly divorced and trying to get his life back on track. He loves the game but knows it’s not the bee all and end all and it certainly doesn’t define him. He’s well aware he’s in the latter part of his career and after the sudden ending of his marriage he’s unsure what comes next. He loves his twin daughters to bits, they are his world, and this really showed us what a caring and loving guy he was. He doesn’t get to see them as much as he wants owing to his busy lifestyle which he also blames for the break-up of his marriage.

“I’m too old for one night stands, but too jaded for anything more serious. That only leaves one other option: celibacy.”

Hailey is also recently divorced from her childhood sweetheart and a similar age to Matt. She’s shy, whip smart and sassy however very insecure when it comes to the opposite sex.  We couldn’t help but love her and found her so down to earth and relatable. She’s the co-owner of a virtual personal assistant service, Fetch, with her ex-husband, Jackson, which is how she meets Matt. She’s secretly being crushing on him for years and can’t believe her luck when he wants to meet her in the flesh.

“I’m ridiculously attracted to you, Hottie. I figured I should be upfront about that.”

The relationship between Hailey and Matt was adorable and we found his treatment of her so endearing. At times Hailey was like a skittish kitten and needed patience and understanding however at no time did Matt push her. He treated her with respect but at times we felt Hailey held back however we fully understood her reticence. After all she was in such awe of him, star struck even and we think she felt understandably overwhelmed while still trying to find her feet as a single woman.

“Coach is waiting, Hailey.”

“Be a good recruit ad lose the bra while I take care of this. Fuck, Hailey. It’s gonna be an effort to go slow. But warm ups are important.”

We loved the supporting characters; they were brilliant! We feel we have to give a special mention to Jenny, Hailey’s best friend and employee. The banter between the pair of them had us smiling at every turn. There was certainly no shortage of laughter in this read as we also got to meet the other characters from previous books.

“Morning. Someone’s grumpy.”

“I didn’t get much sleep last night.”

“Oh you poor thing! Stayed up all night having sex. How dreadful.”

As always, Ms Bowen and Ms Kennedy delighted and charmed us with their banter. We inhaled this book in one sitting and at no time did we feel the need to skim to the end; in fact, we didn’t want it to end! This story was a very refreshing take on a newly divorced couple experiencing life after divorce. It felt real and uplifting. Yes, the book had very little angst and tension but it really didn’t bother us because we got beautiful, loving and funny and for us that left us more than satisfied. We swooned at the romance shared between Hailey and Matt and at times we had to reach for our fans during the sex scenes! We have no hesitation in awarding this read five stars! As always ladies, bravo!
