Tangled Web #1

The underworld of Chicago is far from forgiving. It’s a world where knowledge means power, power money, and money everything.
While I paid the ultimate price to have it all, it wasn’t my decision to give my life..
That doesn’t mean I ceased to exist, only to live.
Going where the job takes me and living in the shadows, with deadly accuracy I utilize the skills inherent to me, not knowing from where they came, not recalling what I’d lost.
And then I saw her.
Laurel Carlson.
I shouldn’t want her, desire her, or need her, yet with each sighting I know she is exactly what I have to have. Laurel has the ability to do what I thought was impossible. She sees what others don’t.
My gut tells me that it’s a deadly mistake to change my plans and open my world to her. My mind says she’ll be repulsed by my twisted existence.
None of that matters, because my body won’t take no for an answer.
I’ve made dangerous mistakes before.
This time, will the price be too high?

When the masks fall off, they spill out one by one, and everything blows up in their faces.

Moti Ferreira is a 24-year-old born to Indian parents. She lives with her overbearing mother Dolly, and the poor lass was doomed from the day she was born. She thinks she’s found the key to freedom when she meets the best man of her cousin’s soon to be husband. Moti is to board a yacht around the Greek Isles but she must conquer her fear of swimming as well as seduce Nikos and cope with her eccentric family for a whole two weeks. No easy task as you read on and discover how crazy her family actually are. However, she never visions a complication in the form of Alexandros Veronis, the onboard chef who witnesses a lot of Moti mishaps. Moti starts to fall under his spell-like cooking superpowers, and then secrets abound around all of the guests on the yacht.

Two cultures brought together in this hilarious romantic comedy. I particularly loved the journey they embarked on around the Greek islands. Having just come back from Crete myself, I understood “yamas” and what the drink ouzo was. Also, how hospitable the Greeks are with their generosity. This book had me laughing-out-loud and the visions the funny scenes conjured up had me smiling all the way through. It has swoon-worthy moments with the delicious Alex, and a scene with Naani made me erupt into a full belly laugh. I couldn’t stop thinking about poor Moti though. The disasters which followed her, and how Alex showed her a whole new world instead of the clouded vision Moti’s mum had shrouded her in.

‘I wasn’t afraid of dying. I was afraid of dying without living.’

The character development is amazing, each one of them bringing something special to the story. Let’s not forget that this is about Moti and told predominantly from her point of view. There are twists and turns which left me open-mouthed when I discovered all the hidden secrets. It’s such a refreshing and well-written book. I was sucked straight into a yacht where I meet the crew members and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone aboard. A fantastic holiday read I highly recommend, it has everything from comedy, lightheartedness to romance. And a bit of a message one should take note of is how we live our lives. We don’t always get what we want when we try to keep others happy. This is the first time I’ve read Ms Attar’s work and was pleasantly surprised and absolutely loved her penmanship. Very well-deserved 5-stars and I would have given more if I could have.

“Sometimes you don’t know what you’re missing until you find it. And when you do, you want to pause and relish it forever.”

This latest offering by Leylah is quite different from her usual style but is also the most entertaining and hilarious read I have had for a long time.

Moti Ferreira at twenty-four is still single and has not met her soul mate yet. She was raised to believe that that man has three thumbs and has to marry him or else something bad will happen. Moti’s mother is a control freak drama queen and all she does is try to remind Moti of her duty to marry the right man. When Moti becomes the maid of honour at her cousin Isabelle’s wedding and finds out that the best man Nikos looks like her perfect match along comes Alex the chef who creates the most delectable mouth-watering dishes she ever tasted and he is as tasty as his creations too. What’s not to like eh but what about Nikos who is supposed to be the one written in the stars for Moti?

“Sometimes you don’t know what you’re missing until you find it. And when you do, you want to pause it and relish it forever.”

Written in Moti’s point of view, this colourful tapestry of Greek and Indian cultures combined make this book the perfect summer holiday read. Light-hearted with flirty funny banters, mishaps galore and characters that will make you laugh and cry, Alex and Moti’s story is a breath of fresh air from the dark and dramatic books I have read lately. This very well written book not only successfully combines the drama in family relationships but also gives you a deeper insight into Greek and Indian culture. Although this is meant to be light-hearted there are some moments between mother and daughter, sister and sister, husband and wife, cousin and cousin dialogues that touched me deeply. I couldn’t have asked for a more well-balanced storyline that not only entertains but is also informative, a story that makes you giggle and cry happy tears. I highly recommend this book!

Minutes into Moti on the Water and I was laughing so much I could hardly breathe! And there’s no let-up. It’s a constant, making this welcome offering a book you truly need to read. Attar has proved to be an extremely versatile writer. Painfully funny one-liners, snappy comebacks and her shedding insight into Indian culture with flair, I found beyond refreshing. There’s no doubt her straying away from suspenseful romantic fiction has worked to a tee but that being said, she still kept this reader guessing what calamities were around the corner and what would be the outcome of them.

Every unimaginable scenario happens when a Greek family get together with Moti’s folk, becoming a challenge for this adorable lass in more ways than one! Throw a luxurious cruise into the mix set in the crystalline waters of the Aegean Sea, and what you’ve got is a story that’s impossible to put down. This read spoilt me to bits. Having travelled to the islands where they went brought back many happy memories. And the mealtimes. Goodness me, I laughed until I cried. The fish heads, eyes and tails…deary me, I live on a Mediterranean island, so seeing dishes like Moti had in front of her isn’t new for me. But to her horror, they were there staring her in the face!

‘You can serve it, Chef Alexandros, but I don’t have to eat it.’

I can only describe Moti as a beautiful walking disaster. If it’s going to happen to someone, it’s her on the receiving end all-the-damn-time! Her lack of confidence doesn’t stop her though. Totally blaming her mum, Dolly who she’s taking care of for putting her down, I’d have loved to tell this whimsical woman to take a good look at her amazing daughter’s qualities. On the other hand, Naani, Moti’s grandmother, is lovely. You’ll see why I thought she had no idea what was going on around her but don’t be fooled, her cognitive skills are sharper than mine and that’s saying something!

“Your turn will come too. And when it does, don’t listen to anything but your heart.”

Moti had already met Nikos, her cousin’s future husband’s best man at a pre-wedding do and over the moon that he’s onboard. Now here’s a character and a half. Flirtatious, wealthy and rockin’ a hot bod to boot; more importantly, he’s fancy-free. Not surprisingly, he caught Moti’s attention straight away! Was this the only reason she was attracted to him? Ahh, just wait and see…I nearly choked with laughter when it was pointed out. This guy worried me and seeing as Moti has an innocence about her, I prayed she wasn’t going to be another notch on his bedpost.

“You and I are going to have a lot of fun on this trip,”

Alex. Chef extraordinaire, the alchemist of everything food, the guy with the man bun is flippin’ gorgeous and about to titillate Moti’s taste buds with his cuisine. How else are his sauces…oops, I meant his sorcery of delights going to affect Moti, you may ask? Not telling but do get ready for mouthwatering recipes that’ll probably have you wiping dribble on your sleeves. Okay, so I fell hard for him. That blinkin’ eyebrow he kept lifting while observing Moti simply got the better of me. And, to top the lot, he’s a really delightful person even if he rubbed Moti up the wrong way most of the time.

‘It’s your fault, Alex. Your cooking is messing with our brains.’

Now then, there is nothing, I mean nothing like a good shocker or two to get you all worked up. Well, when you know what hits the fan, I was like, ‘what the freakin’ heck!’ Secrets were hidden so well that I’m still reeling from the effect of what would change the entire feel of the story.

‘I wanted to shield Moti from the entire world, to keep her safe and happy and carefree.’.

Joseph uncle. Out of all Moti’s relations, I had a soft spot for him and don’t get me wrong because they’ve all got something special character-wise. I honestly felt sorry for the poor man but was so pleased to see him put his foot down when he did. Nonetheless, this is Moti’s story through and through. Yes, the families are entangled, and yes, I slept well after working out the meaning of their lives.

“The stars weren’t the same without you tonight.”

Attar’s delivered a flawless first-person narrative in past tense and brilliantly developed personality traits for all the players’ perfect imperfections and by the way, the ship ahoy vocabulary is spot on.

‘No gangway or footbridge to board this baby. Never in my life had I played it so cool while simultaneously freaking out.’

This romance is so addictive it should come with a ‘hold onto your emotions’ warning. And get this! The sweet cherry topping I never expected and what made my day was when Alex stepped in and told it from his point of view towards the end. So, five stars it is, but this rating seems so mean when my enjoyment was a ten out of ten! From now on, I will never underestimate the powers of a starfish, the powers of forgiveness, or the powers of love. Bravo!

“…And my name is not Mo-te,” I said to the rest of them. “It’s Mo-thi.”.

She thinks I don’t remember that night – but every detail is burned into my brain so deeply, I’ll never forget. The feel of her in my arms, the soft whimpers of pleasure I coaxed from her perfect lips….

And now I’ve spent three months trying to get her out of my head, but I’m starting to understand she’s the only girl I’ll ever want.

I have one shot to show her I can be exactly what she needs, but Elise won’t be easily convinced.

That’s okay, because I’m good under pressure, and this time, I’m playing for keeps.

It was time to do the happy dance! The next book by Kendall Ryan had hit my kindle and I couldn’t wait to get started. This story revolves around forbidden love, lust, and ice hockey. Hot men, hockey sticks and puck bunnies.I’m not a follower of ice hockey; however, when I found out what a puck bunny was, I laughed so hard. Haha!

Justin Brady lived and breathed ice hockey. He was tall, gorgeous, perfectly formed with muscles in all the right places. He lived life in the fast lane and his team had just won the national championship. He was feeling on top of the world. He could have any woman he wanted because let’s face it, when they throw their prowess on and off the ice at you, it becomes too predictable, jaded and loses its appeal.

So what turned out as a harmless flirtation, quickly turned into something more. And that’s really where this story begins.

Elise Parrish was mostly known for being Owen’s sweet and innocent little sister. Not so innocent and not so sweet. She’d grown into a beautiful woman.

Owen, Justin and Elise had all grown up together and Justin and Owen weren’t only teammates and roommates, but also best friends. The dynamics between the three of them were beginning to change. Every time Elise was close to Justin, her body would betray her, leaving her breathless with excitement and she could no longer deny the physical attraction. What she didn’t know was that the feeling was entirely mutual.

They gave in to temptation. Knowing that Elise was totally off-limits made this even harder for Justin. He didn’t want to upset his best friend Owen. I personally would have just gone for it and told him. You have to do what makes you happy and sod everyone else! So, watching these two characters sneak around trying to not get caught is kind of hilarious. You are hoping for a happy ending, but who knows…

I really did enjoy this book. The story was totally believable, the couple connected and I connected to the couple. I didn’t agree with some of their choices, but in the end, who am I lol?

Congratulations to the author for another enjoyable storyline, totally flawless. I, for one, look forward to reading more of your work.

BEAUTY AND THE BAYOU by Erin Nicholas is LIVE!

BATB - RB banner

Beauty and the Bayou, an all-new sexy, small town, opposites attract romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Erin Nicholas, is available now!

Sawyer Landry knows he’s been beastly to be around for the past few months. But he can’t seem to remember how to be fun-loving and friendly. Until he sees Juliet Dawson on his boat dock… and realizes that hip waders are, apparently, one of his turn-ons. But despite the beauty in the boots, the last thing he needs right now is a city girl in his way for the next two weeks.

But he’s not really getting a vote. Juliet is determined that her little brother rebuild the dock he and his idiot friends smashed. She’s quirky, klutzy, independent…and possibly an even bigger pessimist than Sawyer is. He’s incredibly drawn to the cynical fish-out-of-water, who seems to be the one person who isn’t intimidated by his growling.

The big, gruff boat captain is the first person in a long time to want to watch out for her and Juliet finds that hotter than his grandma’s jambalaya. Well, that and his sexy scar, his emotional baggage, and the sense of humor and fun that is buried deep.

But Sawyer doesn’t need any more people to worry about long-term and the things that make him feel protective of Juliet aren’t going to go away. So, this two-week adventure can’t be anything more than a fling. With Juliet down on the bayou, there’s an even bigger threat than alligators and hurricanes. There’s the very good chance of someone ending up with a broken heart.

This is the first book I have read by this author, a light-hearted romance that involves two individuals that have the same issues. This is the third book in the series Boys of the Bayou but can be read as a standalone.

Sawyer Landry is one of four partners in the Boys of the Bayou business. He has not been the best company these past months because of what happened to his best friend, Tom. He is overly cautious and is overprotective of his family and friends that when he sees Juliet for the first time his usual self goes overboard and so did she, almost!

Juliet Dawson has almost always been bubble-wrapped by her older brothers and parents because of what happened to her when she was ten years old. Through the years she has learned how to be prepared at all times; she puts Health and Safety officers to shame. When she comes to join the Landry family to sort out her younger brother Chase’s mess her life turns upside down, literally, when she meets Sawyer.

Juliet and Sawyer’s chemistry is a slow burn explosive romance. From the instant they met, the cautious and slow but sure flirtation and nearly there moments, one can’t help but cheer for this couple. Juliet is such a klutz but she is always better prepared than a Boy Scout. Sawyer counteracts her what-ifs because he is almost on the same boat. Juliet and Sawyer are yin and yang; they are a perfect match even a blind person could see it. The secondary characters in this book are equally as entertaining and make me want to join in the family business. Overall I really enjoyed Sawyer and Juliet’s romantic mishaps and misadventures and I am sure you will too.

Carin Frost doesn’t understand what’s happening to her. A confident businesswoman, wife, and mother, she begins to resent everything about her life. Nothing makes sense. Nothing makes her feel. Maybe it’s the recent loss of her mother in a tragic accident. Or maybe she’s just losing her mind.

Carin is determined to keep her distance until a work assignment sends them to Southeast Asia where a storm is brewing on the island. In the midst of the chaos, Matias asks her to do something unimaginable, exhilarating, BOLD. Carin knows the consequences could be dire, but it may be the only way to save herself.

Carin is a successfully independent career woman, a wife and a mother of a ten-year-old boy frantically juggling chores and duties. The recent death of her mother plus the growing distance between her and her husband adds up to her feeling of despondency and resentment, emptiness and overwhelming emotions. Reading through all these and how she reacted to family situations you don’t need to be a rocket scientist or a psychologist to know that she is clinically depressed; although her husband’s laissez faire attitude towards her doesn’t help either.

This beautiful narrative is written in three parts, the first two in Carin’s point of view and the last one is from Matias’ perspective. Ms. Brae never disappoints with her stories, she has a knack of weaving a tapestry of words that will keep you entertained. Although I loved the plot of this story, I find the main characters a bit hard to like at some points in this book: Carin with her life-changing decisions, Jack’s emotional detachment and Matias’ selfish attitude. They might not be the lovable characters I hoped I’d find in this book but one can totally relate on how they feel. There are some minor details regarding Carin’s background that I thought was contradictory but I don’t want to split hairs about it because overall this is a wonderful story about life, love and second chances.

“Because of you, I have heard the colors of the sky, seen the rushing of the wind and tasted the sound of love’s sweet words. To you, I give all my life, all my love, my present and my past.
Whether together or apart the one truth I will always have is you.”

I have followed this author’s journey in writing and considering that this will be her last one, I thought that she finished it on a high, at the top of her game. A truly poignant swan song this book is one of my favourite reads this year. Highly recommended!

Reviewed by Sharon Thérèse at KFF

If I had to describe Christine Brae’s writing in one word, it would have to be magnificent. The flawless second-person singular narrative in past tense is a powerful one, taking the reader on a crushing journey from the protagonist’s perspective. In my opinion, using this inner thoughts method was brave as it could easily have isolated the other characters. This was by no means the case. And then came another delightful surprise. Plentiful dialogue between her heroine and the other characters was executed in such a way that I couldn’t pull myself away. The true-to-life plot is remarkably good, and it’s clear to see from this book and others from Brae that’s she’s a well-travelled woman. Her description of places and happenings gave me a certain déjà vu feeling, bringing out all the smiles, sometimes tears. And not only did the fish and chips scenario make me chuckle, but the mentioning of Spanish cities and wording was delightfully spot on.

I found it a tad difficult connecting with Carin Frost straightaway. If she hadn’t been so indecisive and got to grips with her issues earlier which was what I wanted, maybe I would have thought differently. Ahh, but later I realized how unfair my opinion of her was. The author clearly wanted me to suffer. Because I did…and a lot. With so much to lose, what’s there to gain by upsetting life’s balance when it appears that you have everything? Granted, she works long hours, is away from home more often than not and responsible for the running of a multinational business. A loving family, a husband who’s attentive and an adorable son wise beyond his years, yet with her admission, even when her selfishness was manifested, it became a welcome reprieve.

‘When you open up to even your closest allies, they always turn your deepest darkest secrets against you.’

Carin’s personal conflicts became mine and despite those around her having a very good idea she’s in pain, they don’t know to what extent. Unless she opens her heart to those who care for her, neither she nor they can move on. I’m sure many of us have had at one point or another experienced distress similar to hers. Illness, vulnerability in relationships, losing someone dear, these factors and more affect us deeply and we’re at a loss. Although her guilt is excruciatingly heartbreaking to read, I never ever blamed Carin for her actions. Intent on finding the peace of mind she desperately needs, I thought she would eventually find it. I’m leaving this question open for you. Will she?

‘I should be grateful, my life is so good. I have nothing to complain about. They’ve been trying to get me back, but I’m so far gone. I’m so far gone!’

Matias Torres is a successful Spanish businessman, drop-dead gorgeous, well-mannered and outwardly calms troubled waters. Inwardly, he also has problems of his own but of a different kind. Carin and Matias’ magnetic attraction for each other leaps off the pages. She tries to ward him off…well, as much as is possible and goes out of her way not to be around him. Still, all is not what it seems.

“When he’s around, I live a few brief moments. And then I die again.”

Here’s one totally smitten guy who’s respectful of her wishes. In one scene which left me aghast, he convinces her to take a running jump into the unknown. If Carin’s state of mind worried me, Matias’ worried me more. Why, when he has such a promising future, did he go to such extremes? Easy to answer, love. But in all its fragility and with so much at stake, trying his hardest to help Carin feel at ease with herself might not be enough.

“Could love come that quickly? Could it die in haste too?”

The before and the after. Part II is a game-changer. If I cried in the first half, heartfelt scenes in the second left me with a feeling of utter joy. Yet Brae still kept that sense of the fragility going. She gave me hope, she made me take a serious look at things we take for granted. Surrounding ourselves with seemly essential things that make us happy in Carin’s book, isn’t the answer. Actually, Brae’s look on life is nothing less than awe-inspiring, her descriptive writing which took me to paradise, out of this world.

‘We steal the moments that belong to others.’

Sadly, Christine’s creative penmanship we shall see no more. I can’t thank her enough for leaving us this legacy of characters impossible to forget, impossible to say goodbye to. The Year I Left is a masterpiece, it is everything. Brae coaxed every imaginable emotion out of me and had me rooting for both Carin and Matias. After turning the last page, I quite honestly didn’t know whether to laugh, cry or shout at the top of my voice. Not at all expected, it was an ending for a beginning. Or was it really? A love story with a difference, a top-quality romance not to be missed. Bravo!

‘Every beginning has an end. And every end starts with a beginning.’
