From New York Times Bestselling Author, Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

Sharing a summer house with a hot-as-hell roommate should be a dream come true, right?

Not when it’s Justin…the only person I’d ever loved…who now hates me.

When my grandmother died and left me half of the house on Aquidneck Island, there was a catch: the other half would go to the boy she helped raise.

The same boy who turned into the teenager whose heart I broke years ago.

The same teenager who’s now a man with a hard body and a hardass personality to match.

I hadn’t seen him in years, and now we’re living together because neither one of us is willing to give up the house.

The worst part? He didn’t come alone.

I’d soon realize there’s a thin line between love and hate. I could see through that smug smile. Beneath it all…the boy is still there. So is our connection.

The problem is…now that I can’t have Justin, I’ve never wanted him more.

Author’s note – RoomHate is a full-length standalone novel. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Kindle Friends Forever: Four Stars

Reviewed by Rachel McEwan and Sharon Thérèse Nuttall

** ARC given by author in exchange for an honest review, with thanks **

“I never hated you. I couldn’t hate you if I tried. Believe me, I have tried.”

The title Roomhate conjured up our imagination and left us so intrigued that when given the opportunity to read and review this standalone, we literally jumped for joy! There is no denying that Ms Ward’s talent as a contemporary romance author is unquestionable and besides that, her word usage and storytelling technique has always had a way of getting under our skin. But let’s get back to the title. We were expecting some real ‘hate’ as is suggested but in our opinion, we have to disagree with this term. The feelings between the two protagonists was more bitterness from an almighty misunderstanding which occurred when they were children. What we cannot dispute is the story’s build-up which seeped in little by little reaching a crescendo to a climatic proportion making us sigh with relief. However, moments when we thought all could be lost were numerous and not without its hardship on our part. Snippets of childhood memories fed throughout the story kept us on our toes and in our eagerness to know why these two friends were estranged for so long, develops into them finding their way. Learning how to forgive, trust, take on responsibilities and adjust to changes is fundamentally what the two protagonists’ story is about.

“I hope you’ll have dinner with us tonight?”
“Actually, probably not tonight. I’d better be leaving…”
“That’s what you’re good at, isn’t it?”
“What’s that?”
“Leaving. That’s what you’re good at.”

Justin and Amelia’s relationship from hate, or should we say bitterness, was more slow burn than full of passion. Once they had established a few ground rules and after discussing why it had broken down, things go from cool to warm. Warm converts into steaminess and the steaminess scenes are off the charts. All this revolves around a solid and well-thought-out story of coming to terms with what was and what is. The ‘what is’ comes as a shock to both of them. Never in a million years could they have ever imagined that a dearly loved person in their past knew more than they did about themselves and left them no option but to sort out their misunderstandings. It was difficult for us to decide which team we were on. Amelia had her reasons, Justin did too! Dilemma…no doubt about it!

“…. I fully understand why you’re afraid to take things to a sexual level with me. The logical side of me thinks you’re right, but the illogical side doesn’t give a **** and is only thinking about lifting you over my face right now and making you come while you ride my mouth.”

Justin is a thoroughly decent kind of guy. And regardless of him being drop-dead gorgeous; there wasn’t anything that made us we dislike him. We understood his distress and utter dislike when Amelia is thrust back into his life. Taking into consideration that neither of them had had a good start in life and both had worked hard for everything achieved, we felt that the story would have benefitted from hearing his version of events which we think would have given the reader a better dynamic to the book. All he had done from the word go, was love and protect Amelia until, of course, she did the unthinkable in all her naivety. In our minds, they were the ultimate kindred spirits. We loved how the book flipped back to their youth, their past together, and their own personal struggles to become their own persons.

“We both came from broken homes, but from the moment I met you, my world seemed a little less broken. I always felt like my job was to somehow protect you. And my keeping what they were doing from you was only an extension of that. It wasn’t meant to be deceptive.”

Confessions are told sparingly, secrets are revealed like an intravenous drip, but no promises are ever shared. And this aspect of the story, we lapped up with gusto. Seeing them adapt to such a complexities was an absolute delight. Yet, all is not what it seems. Justin has a life and we liked it… a lot. To top the lot, Amelia likes what he’s got, too! Complicated… it is! Amelia. Oh…this gal has so much to gain and so much to lose. She’s sensible, loving but so alone at times that our hearts broke for her.

“You know what they say about assuming things…”
“You end up in a porno theatre watching anal?”

Contrary to many, we are not against cheating as it exists. The author has woven this story around this issue but at the same time, cannily steered well clear of it. Clever, eh? We were most certainly impressed by her modus operandi. The dialogue between all concerned was lacking only adding to that mystery of what could happen next. Told in past tense from Amelia’s point of view, the banter in present is really, really good. The text messages are worthy of highlighting and quoting, the editing faultless and the epilogue… we’re lost for words as we are suckers for endings like this one. What more can we say other than Bumblebee. Bumblebee. Bravo!

“I love you, Bumblebee. I’m sorry it’s taken me this long to tell you.”

RoomHate Excerpt

My heart felt like it was pounding out of my chest. Watching this whole thing unfold had made me totally lose sense of reality. I felt like I’d been experiencing every movement, every feeling right along with him, except I wasn’t allowed to come. It was as if I’d seriously lost my mind in the process. That was the only thing that could possibly explain why my body decided to betray me, letting out an involuntary sigh….moan? I wasn’t sure and couldn’t even tell you what it was except to say whatever sound I made caused Justin to jump back. His head whipped toward me, and his shocked eyes met mine for a brief second before I ran back down the stairs.

My heart felt like it was in my mouth. Escaping out the front door and down to the water, I continued to run aimlessly on the sand. At one point, about a mile down the beach, it became necessary to stop and catch my breath, even though I wanted to keep running. I’d gotten so wrapped up in Justin that I’d forgotten how sick I was this afternoon. It was all hitting me again as I stumbled over to the shoreline and vomited into the ocean.

I collapsed into the sand and must have sat there for over an hour. The sun was starting to go down, and the tide was coming in. It felt like everything was closing in on me. I knew I couldn’t avoid going home forever.

What if he told Jade what I’d done?

That I was watching him.

Oh God.

He was going to crucify me for this.

What excuse could I possibly give him that would explain why I was hiding behind his door, watching him ejaculate like it was a Fourth of July fireworks performance?

I decided that I needed to get home before Jade did. Maybe I could convince him not to say anything. Brushing the sand off my thighs, I made my way back over to the house.

My heart nearly stopped upon finding Justin standing in the kitchen, drinking out of a half-gallon of orange juice. I stood silently behind him and watched as he put the container back.

Justin turned around and finally noticed me standing there. His hair was wet, making it appear brown instead of blonde. He must have taken a shower to wash away the awkwardness of our encounter. Looking painfully handsome in a brown distressed t-shirt that fit his chest like a glove, he just stared me down.

Here it comes.

I braced myself for his humiliating words. My heart was beating out of my chest as he just continued to look at me blankly without saying anything. He slowly walked toward me, and all of the muscles in my body tightened. He was going to get in my face and do it.

KFF’s 4   Review by Sharon Thérèse Nuttall

There’s no argument that these two authors together make a brill team. After reading book one and two which I thoroughly enjoyed, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Bad Boy. And for the reader, this full-length novel is a gem as one is easily able to read as a standalone. The most important facts from the two previous books were integrated into this one with skill resulting in a real page-turner. My sleep deprivation was on the cards! Although not without its moments of angst, what I liked more than anything was the banter entwined in a solid plot. Yeah, I’m a total sucker for good dialogue and Ms Reed and Ms Steele made sure that there was plenty of it!

“Let me guess, you want the whole ‘agree to disagree’ crap, too?”

I couldn’t make up my mind whether to like or hate Laurie to start off with. At times she’s indecisive and others, stubborn. Slightly introverted, she drove me around the bend but the point I’m making is this. Being lied to and deluded into thinking her husband was who he wasn’t, causes trust issues. It seemed like the only way she could cope was by setting herself rules which I didn’t entirely agree with. She’s a tad daft in the respect that she makes a rash decision complicating things quite a lot, too. When her bestie does the unthinkable, I could have gladly jumped into my Kindle and strangled the one person Laurie had faith in and considered family. Nevertheless, as the story evolves, I realised Jude was literally looking out for her. In fact, I found Jude’s sound advice really encouraging and I liked how she wasn’t judgemental. There were instances when I understood Laurie’s stance regarding Chase, and it wasn’t surprising that coming to terms with the real Chase and the reason behind his doings, triggered so much unease. Thus, Laurie’s wish to do things her way was more than comprehensible.

“My point is, I was just trying to help you, so don’t be mad.”

Chase is the ultimate bad boy who with his brother, are driven by revenge. Regardless of their differences, severe circumstances bought them closer together. Because Kade was so deeply affected regarding what had happened long ago, was the reason Chase held back the truth from him. I would have liked to have seen more detail about their brotherly relationship; nevertheless, the story concerning this couple’s nonsensical marriage was Laurie’s to tell. At all times, Chase had an ace up his sleeve. How he used them is divulged slowly but surely. Trying to convince Laurie of his good intentions when it had been a pack of lies from the very beginning was going to be a difficult feat.

“I have my resources. And as it happens, I’m also a good actor.”

False pretence is the basis of this love story with a difference and oh boy, to say it is hot would be putting it mildly. The twists and turns are bountiful, Chase’s demeanour and him sticking to his guns sold me lock, stock and barrel, then what was missing for me? Simply his point of view. The secondary characters are well developed as is the storyline. Bravo to you ladies and thank you for this marvellous series finishing on an even better note.

“All good things are worth the wait.”

One of my favourite quotes:

“God, Jude. Catfish would have a field day with you. How many fucking Facebook friends do you have?”

‘I don’t care if he’s signed the contract! He goes or I do, Art, it’s as simple as that.’

Of all the men in all the world Art could have chosen to replace Stanley with at the last minute, why did he have to go and choose Reuben Turner? Stanley is the leading man in the new West End production I’m starring in and I have to practically hump him, which is fine because I’m an actress and I can detach. Even a last minute change of actor shouldn’t pose too much of a problem, except for the small matter that I used to be married to Reuben Turner and there is no way on God’s earth I’m having sex with him, even simulated sex with my knickers still firmly on.

Don’t you ever feel like strangling the author of the book you’re reading? Well, this sentiment came over strongly when we got to the last page. Then again, this little gem deserves smothering Ms French in kisses. We. Loved. It! However, the author’s modus operandi in this series which could have been a tad risky on her part but has paid off admirably, has us hooked line and sinker and driving us nuts. She simply can’t do this to us… ooh no, the carrot’s been dangled in front of our noses twice now. So please, we’d be two overjoyed gals if she’d seriously consider turning these titillating super-hot, lengthy teasers into novels in the future. Why? Because her characters deserve their own books, their stories deserve to be told. Okay, we’re well aware these short reads are aimed at filling in that moment of boredom, and there’s no argument whatsoever that you’ll laugh out loud and most likely grab for a fan, but we want… no need, much more where this has come from. We have no doubt that you will, too.

“Well, step aside, Nicolas Cage. My ex-husband always did have a hero complex.”

It was an absolute pleasure meeting up with two professional actors who have had a bumpy past, been estranged for more than a long while and are thrown together in the most peculiar of circumstances. Nope, we can’t possibly tell you where as you have just got to find out for yourselves. But we will say this, told from Lizzie’s point of view in present tense, she goes out of her way to express her feeling for Reuben, her ex, to the reader. This pair could light a fire from wet wood. Sparks fly, the heat’s turned up to such a level resulting in scorching hotness!

“‘Chemistry?’ I bark. ‘The only chemistry around here will be the fucking poison that I tip in his coffee.’”

Faultlessly narrated, well-structured and written with some brilliant one-liners, the character development is as such that we also couldn’t help but love Lizzie and Ruben. As we’re a tad greedy and can’t seem to get enough of these issues, all we can say is roll on the next three Fridays. Bravo to you, Ms French.

“This is me following the script I always should have, instead of some screwed up horror movie script about a string of women who don’t hold a candle to you. No one does.”

Where, for crying out loud, has this author been hiding? Why we haven’t read any works by her is actually a dilemma since her genre is right up our street. But as they say, ‘better late than never.’ A unique style combined with a solid and original storyline and brilliant character development left us in awe. We found it gripping from the first page and although it was a tad confusing to start off with, this was to soon be rectified as we read on. Words, paragraphs and chapters were savoured to the very last drop only meaning that one has to be on the ball as every minute detail is of extreme importance. Angst-ridden moments flourish, humorous banter abounds but more often than not, touches of disparagement outweigh the laugh out loud occasions. We have to say how much we loved this authors writing style. She must have a very witty, dry sense of humour which came over in the dialogue in boat loads!

“I bet you’re a missionary man. By the book: seven-point-five minutes of foreplay, thirty seconds of clitoral stimulation to get her lubed up and exactly thirty five seconds of thrusts until climax, followed by ten minutes of spooning, a kiss on the cheek, and maybe even a gentlemanly ‘thank you’ before insisting she leave so you can get your necessary eight-point-five hours of sleep.”

The story overflows with complexities. Two thirty-year-old siblings joined at the medulla aren’t what one could say, conventional. Chapter one is unusual in the respect that two lives end and then begin for unknown reasons! We are still asking why they were so highly trained in the art of hand-to-hand combat; however, book one told us about how the two protagonists adapt to their new identities, their new surroundings and their expectations. Regardless of so many unanswered questions, we most certainly connected to this quirky pair. Told in third person from multiple points of view, the story flips back and forth from past to present throwing light on their former selves.

“We can put bullets in our heads tomorrow if that’s what you want, but don’t self-destruct on me. Not after everything we have been through.”

Jessica Day and her brother, Jude, have no option but to move on and become Jill and Jackson Knight. Moving to a neighbourhood where the residents are close-knit, generous and gossipy isn’t exactly what they expected, but they won’t waste any time integrating into their new community and jobs. Brother and sister have a very special relationship and we loved it, we loved them. Tenaciously sassy; Jill has a soft spot – her vulnerability. How she made up for this was a little rebellious on her part. Her outrageous dress sense is second to none. Oh lord, red welly boots… her attire… well lack of it, has its repercussions and made us smile more than once with the comments flying back and forth! Mainly from a neighbour whose traits are totally fitting for his military profession. It took us time to come round to AJ but when we did, there was no going back.

“I’m going to fuck your mouth first.”
“Interesting choice of foreplay given my …. need.”

Jackson. Tattooed, drop-dead gorgeous and add his positive attitude to adjust, had us swooning. Jill worries him no end and with reason. The aftermath of a traumatic experience left her damaged, the circumstances she’s in and what she had to leave behind don’t help either. A huge heart to help out where she can and Jackson’s unconditional love and comprehension gives her an inner strength to carry on. The love between these siblings is unquestionably the backbone of this story. We’re not sure either one could go through the experiences they’ve had without each other. They haven’t had what one would call a traditional childhood but so far in this book, you don’t get to know the detail. As with most of this read, you are picking up snippets as you go along which fall into place as you near the end!

“It’s a kiss, Jessica. Not sex.”
“Whoa…. Clearly you don’t understand. A kiss is a save the date, an RSVP to my vagina that says: You. Will. Be. There.”

Wow, the ending! That really did leave us blown away! We aren’t going to spoil it but unusually, the ending of this read isn’t really the ending! Confused? You will be but let us explain. The author kindly gives you a little taster of the beginning of book two, Middle of Knight. You don’t have to read it but being gluttons for punishment, we did! Let’s just say we ‘one-clicked’ as soon as possible! Although we were left bereft from what we’d read, we have to know what happens next to this brother and sister. All we know is their lives are about to get a whole lot more complicated!

“So you want me for my body?”
“I think we both know it’s not for your stellar personality.”

If you are looking for a read full of intrigue, suspense, passion and without question, originality, this book delivers! It’s not your typical love story per se but it was an amazing insight into the minds of two extraordinary individuals. The book comes under the erotica genre and to a point, we have to agree as the book does contain some very steamy sex scenes; notwithstanding, it’s so much more than that. Our recommendation would be to go in blind and get ready for the ride of your life! Also, do not be tempted to skip a few pages to find out what happens next (tempting we know!) as the chances are you would miss a vital piece of information which could be key to the story. Bravo Ms Jewel E. Ann!

Jewel is a free-spirited romance junkie with a quirky sense of humor.

With 10 years of flossing lectures under her belt, she took early retirement from her dental hygiene career to stay home with her three awesome boys and manage the family business.

After her best friend of nearly 30 years suggested a few books from the Contemporary Romance genre, Jewel was hooked. Devouring two and three books a week but still craving more, she decided to practice sustainable reading, AKA writing.

When she’s not donning her cape and saving the planet one tree at a time, she enjoys yoga with friends, good food with family, rock climbing with her kids, watching How I Met Your Mother reruns, and of course…heart-wrenching, tear-jerking, panty-scorching novels.
