“Good Morning Malibu, it’s another beautiful day on the west coast! I’m Noely Clark, your host: and I’m in the market for love…”

When the publicity team of the new local restaurant, Going in Blind, began their search for a hot, local celebrity to promote the wildly popular eatery, they couldn’t have found a better person than me.

Outgoing? Check.
Single? Check.
Open to finding love? Check.

I signed up immediately.

A hopeless romantic with an exceedingly demanding schedule, I’ve found it impossible to find the man of my dreams—so Going in Blind seems too good to be true! That’s until they start setting me up on dates—three very different, very attractive, very distinct blind dates—and only one thing is for certain . . .

I’m in big trouble.

Good Morning Malibu,
I’m Noely Clark, and I have a choice to make.
The question is who will I choose; the suit, the rebel, or the jock

Reviewed by Anna Green on behalf of KFF

This is a contemporary romance with a lot of hilarious moments. Ms. Quinn never fails to weave in her trademark sense of humour and funny banter between the characters that will make you smile, giggle and laugh out loud when reading Noely’s story.

Noely Clark is a host in a TV morning show, sassy, funny and a successful career woman but she is lonely. She wants the picket fence, kids and the whole package. But in order to have those she needs to find The One first. When she had the opportunity to meet someone through a new app’s unique scheme she decided to have a go at it.

Jack is the hot and sexy businessman who Noely felt a special connection with when they met that first time. Both love the movie You Got Mail, so it must be a good sign isn’t it? With sparks flying on their first date, we hope it could only get better with The Suit. Wrong!

And then we have Beck, The Rebel. He is the bad ass biker, divorced and seems to carry a lot of baggage with him but dang he is sexy, dances the rumba or samba or whatever it was that involves a lot of dirty dancing. And he speaks Spanish too!  Could he be The One?

Hayden is a hockey pro that recently got transferred to the Quakes in Malibu, a sweet nice guy with the perfect abs, who can resist him? Noely and Hayden also seem to have that mutual attraction going on. What a dilemma for a young woman who is ready to march down the aisle but she needs to find her bridegroom first.

What I like about this light-hearted romance is it takes you back to the days of meeting someone who might just be the perfect guy for you: the giddiness, the butterflies- in- the- stomach feeling and the wobbly knees that come with it when you meet that someone special. I can’t help but compare The Suit, The Rebel and The Jock against each other all three are seriously sexy hunks and good guys. What more can a woman ask for? If I were Noely I’d feel like Goldilocks trying to choose which of the three beds to lie in.

The very funny scenarios provided by the main characters, the equally entertaining Dylan, Noely’s co-host/best friend, Noely’s brother Alex, his wife Lauren with their smarty pants daughter Chloe had me in stitches. If you only get to read one romantic comedy book this year, this has got to be The One. I dare you not to laugh! I can’t wait to read the stories of the other two guys who didn’t get the girl.

I didn’t realize how close I was to the restaurant because I’m ten minutes early. Does that make me seem desperate? No, I chastise myself. It shows that I respect the other person’s time . . . right?

God, dating is the worst. There are so many unspoken rules you have to follow to not look desperate, or to not look like a psycho, or a creep, or horny, or—

“Can I help you, miss?”

Straightening up, I turn toward the hostess stand, which is a beautifully carved piece of wood. Standing behind it is an exotic, tall woman with long black hair, stunning grey eyes, and a massive engagement ring on her hand. Please tell me she got that rock from dating someone in this program.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not that happiness for my life is dependent on getting married, but to see a success story in the flesh—particularly for me—would be encouraging.

“Hi, yes, I’m Noely Clark. I have a date at seven tonight with”—I lean forward, feeling silly and whisper—“with WindsorKnot.”

Her smile is kind and reassuring, making me feel a little calmer. “Yes, Miss Clark, I have you here for seven. You’re date hasn’t arrived yet, so can I show you to the bar for a drink while you wait?”

“That would be lovely, thank you.”

With my clutch tucked under my arm, I follow tall, dark, and beautiful to the bar where a very handsome Asian man is standing with a towel draped over his shoulder and a bright grin on his face. He’s wearing a button-up shirt with rolled sleeves, a brown vest covering his chest, which totally channels his inner Justin Timberlake.

“Danny, this is Miss Clark. She has a reservation at seven. Would you be so kind to make her whatever drink she would like?”

“Of course.” He winks at the hostess who presses her warm hand on my arm.

“Enjoy, Miss Clark. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. My name is Veronica, this is Danny, and we will be happy to serve you in any way.” With a parting grin, she moves back to her hostess spot.

Well, she’s nice.

“Miss Clark, please take a seat. What would you like?”

My tight, formfitting red dress makes my hop onto the bar stool a difficult task, but with a pleading prayer to the dress gods and a swift jump, I situate myself, only breaking a minor sweat.

I let out a sigh of relief and place my hands on the bar in front of me, scanning the glitzy bottles of “muscle relaxant.” “Hmm . . . how about a Moscow Mule?”

“Coming right up.” He gets to work and I watch as he magically floats around the bar, pulling the ingredients. “We recently bought new copper mugs, and I’ve been dying to use them.”

“Yeah? Am I the first?”

Winking, he says, “You are.”

If I didn’t know any better, I would say Danny is a bit of a flirt. Either that or he’s super friendly. Or simply made to be a bartender.

From beneath the bar, Danny pulls out a shiny, hammered-copper mug, and I’m instantly taken by the design. So sleek, just like its surroundings. The restaurant, with its white exposed brick, natural wood features, electric colors, and stone tabletops, is sexy, yet inviting. The friendly waitstaff is an absolute bonus. Every table is cornered off in its own spot, never getting too close to the other tables around it, and the mood lighting is on point with dim Edison bulb lights hanging from the ceiling and tabletop candles. I’m feeling the mood.

Despite the welcoming atmosphere, I can’t help but feel nervous, even after my brief exchange with WindsorKnot. There’s something to say about a blind date: the anticipation, the unknown, the knowledge that you’re having dinner with someone to possibly form a romantic relationship. It’s intimidating, but exhilarating all at the same time.

Could this be the last time I ever go on a first date? Will he like me? Will he want to get to know me?

Butterflies float around in my stomach and my cheeks heat as Danny places a napkin in front of me, topped by my drink with a lime slice on the side.

“Here you go, Miss Clark. Please enjoy.”

I smile politely. “Thank you.” When I take a sip, I’m instantly assaulted by the ginger-lime combination. Perfect. “This is fantastic.”

“Good.” Danny winks again and like an old-time bartender, starts drying a tumbler with the towel hanging over his shoulder. Eyeing me for a second, he asks, “A little nervous?”

After taking a sip from my drink, I lick my lips and nod. “Just a little.” I scrunch my nose, squinting ever so slightly. “Is it obvious?”

“Nah, you look pretty chill compared to a lot of blind daters I see come through the door.”

“Oh, I’m sure you see a lot of different reactions to these dates.” I lean forward, the cold wood of the bar cooling my sweaty hands, and whisper, “Any good stories you can tell me?”

Danny chuckles quietly and leans forward himself, taking a look from side to side before answering. “Plenty, but looks like your date just arrived.”

My date just arrived?

The temperature in the room seems to go up a thousand degrees as my body seizes and my shoulders tense. “Oh God, can you see him? Is he hot? What does he look like? Should I turn around? No, I shouldn’t, he would know I was checking him out.” Whispering a little louder, I ask again, “Just tell me, is he cute?”

Danny’s eyes scan over my head and his smile stretches across his face. “That’s for you to judge, not me.” Damn you, Danny.

Oh Christ, I’m not ready.

That’s right, I’m not freaking ready for this.

I get it, I know I said I was ready, that I wanted to do this, that I was all-in, that I wanted to find my soul mate, but now that I’m here, seconds from meeting “the one,” I’m pretty sure I’m going to throw up. Yep, I’m going to throw up. I can feel it rising.

Oh God, I’m going to retch all over him, right on his shoes. I know it. It’s bound to happen.

“Relax, you’re going to have fun,” Danny whispers before he turns to the bottles behind him.

As if the light hairs on my arm can sense it, they stand at attention as the sound of faint footsteps come closer.

Click, click, click. The cement floor leaves zero room for sneaking up on anyone.

Don’t throw up, don’t throw up. Think compliments, think pleasantries, think—

Smooth molasses drips over my shoulders as the most velvet of voices I’ve ever heard echoes behind me, pulling me away from the death grip on my copper mug and turning me in my seat to face one of the most handsome and polished men I’ve ever seen.

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.

Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.

Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

AP new - synopsis.jpg
Empty inside, cold in his heart, Zef turned to whisky and drugs to fill the void.

Instead, he ended up with a prison sentence and a new determination to get clean and make something of his life.

Since his release, Zef has been on the road, finding his spiritual home with a traveling carnival and working as a motorcycle stunt rider.

Live fast, live hard, keep moving.

He doesn’t want to be tied down to anyone or anything. Fiercely loyal, the only people he cares about are his brother and his carnie family.

Until a crazy girl who’s run away to join the circus crashes into his world.
But now his old life is catching up with him, and Zef has to choose a new road.

A standalone story, and the last one in the TRAVELING SERIES.

4.5 Stars ~ Reviewed by Anna Green on behalf of KFF

This is the fourth book and final installment to the Travelling series and can be read as a standalone although I would strongly suggest reading the previous books as they are all brilliant.

In this book we get to read Zef’s story, the silent and brooding daredevil who’s had his share of ups and downs, the most recent one finding out that his long distance relationship has ended. I have always admired this author’s style of writing; she digs deep through the carnie life and makes the reader feel as if they are living inside the book. One gets all the glorious details, the interesting family dynamics and hierarchy within the carnies and the business aspects of it.

When Sara, the eighteen year old stowaway joins their group, Zef’s life became more interesting. Their friendship slowly grows into something special in which the author takes us through their emotions,  Zef’s reluctance in getting involved with Sara because of their fourteen year age gap, and Sara’s hero worship of Zef makes their story a sweet and slow burn romance.

The other couples from the previous books: Kes and Aimee, Luke and Zach, Tucker and Tera and also Zef’s brother Dan with his fiancée Lisanne and the patriarch of the carnie clan Ollo (with Bo his capuchin monkey) who although small in stature is bigger than life; his advice and his wisdom makes his character in this series so special. “The carnival is a place to become the person you could be or should be; a place to start over.”

There was no need for me to reread the previous books because their story all intermingled in this book and once you start reading it all comes back to you.  And this being the last book of the series makes me sad to say goodbye to these very interesting friends. Zef and Sara’s story may not be like Kes and Aimee’s fireworks in the sky type of romance but more like striking a match to light a candle in the dark that slowly and steadily glows and shines through. This final book is the perfect ending to a great series.

It wouldn’t have been so bad if I’d landed on my good leg, but I didn’t, and the pain was so intense, my vision went black and all I knew was deafening silence.

I woke up a few seconds later wondering if I’d died and gone to Heaven, because the view was pretty damn good and surely an Angel was watching over me. But as my vision cleared, I realized that Sara was on her knees in the dirt next to me. I think she was screaming, but my ears were ringing so badly, I couldn’t tell.

“…call an ambulance?”

I struggled to sit up, but she held me down by my shoulders.

Kes was next to me, lifting my visor carefully.

“Wait for the paramedics, man.”

Flames of pain were running up from my ankle to my thigh.

“I think I fucked up my knee again,” I groaned.

“Does anything else hurt?”

“Only my pride,” I lied.

Kes grinned and I heard Tucker’s relieved laugh behind me. I squinted up at him.

“Everyone else okay?”

“Yeah, Zef,” he grinned. “We’re all good. You certainly gave the crowd their money’s worth. Can you do that again?”

Then Sara screamed at him.

“Shut up! Shut up! He could have died! He’s hurt! He’s really hurt, and you’re just making a big joke of it!”

And then she burst into tears.

Tucker’s mouth dropped open, stunned into silence. I saw Kes gesturing to Aimee to take Sara away.

“No! I’m not leaving him!”

And she flung herself across my body, gasping and crying. I thought she was going to have a complete meltdown when the paramedics tried to pull her off me.

“Sara, honey,” I gritted out while my whole body felt like it had been run over by a charging rhino, “they’ll do a much better job of getting me onto a stretcher if you climb off of me now.”

She stumbled back, wiping her eyes and nose as I helped the paramedics get me onto the stretcher.

The crowd was on their feet, expressions of interest or horror, depending on how macabre they liked their shows, so I gave them a quick wave and heard applause and cries of relief.

“We’ll see you at the hospital,” Kes called after me.

I gave him a thumbs up, then relaxed back on the stretcher, my knee throbbing like a mofo. Sara was walking next to me, still crying, so I lifted up my gloved hand and she clung onto it as if it would save her from drowning.

But waking up and seeing her sweet face, thinking it felt like Heaven, I wondered if I was the one who was drowning.

I have always loved this author’s funny rom-com stories. Calder is a pro hockey player, a single parent to five year old Shea and the love of his life. One Good Man by Emma Scott

Wow! I am totally blown away by this very emotional love story of Adrian, a French footballer and Janey, an American student journalist that will surely touch your heart. This is the third book of the Coming Home series and can be read as a standalone but would greatly help if you have read the previous books featuring the other Davis siblings, Maverick the younger brother and Quinn the little sister.

We finally get to read Clayton’s story, the eldest of the Davis siblings, the dark and brooding cowboy who is allergic to commitments. He is the protective brother of Maverick and Quinn. Happy that his siblings have settled down and starting their own families, Clay seems happy enough for them but how is he coping? And then there is Caroline, owner of a bookstore who escaped from an abusive relationship, she’s coasting through life, wary and shies away from men. This pair’s first meeting starts with an unforgettable one night stand and it was meant to stay that way. Little do they know that they both have mutual friends and a few months later they meet again.

This contemporary romance is a wee bit slow at the beginning but quickly picks up the pace of the sizzling chemistry between the main characters. Reading about the other siblings Maverick and Leigh who are expecting a baby and Tate and Quinn the youngest sibling who is also expecting makes this book the perfect reunion for the whole family. As expected the author gave us very entertaining banter between the characters that made me giggle and laugh. Clayton’s words will sweep you off your feet. “There’ll never be a day that I don’t love you. Not one. I wasn’t plannin’ on you, baby, and I know you weren’t plannin’ on me, but sometimes what we need to finally feel whole is what we least expect. You are that for me.”

Caroline’s shyness stems from her mother’s verbal abuse when she was young. She ran away with her boyfriend at eighteen and she ends up in another abusive relationship, the lady needs someone to rescue her. She might be the independent lady she is now, she grew a backbone but a woman still needs her knight in shining armour. “You rode in on your white horse, knocked me on my butt, but saved me in the end. My knight in pressed flannel and Wranglers.”

Clay and Caroline’s story is a signature Harper Sloan cowboy romance.  Clay is a dark and brooding alpha cowboy who is not afraid to show his emotions and cry. Then there is Caroline who started as a weak and shy heroine and later on is empowered by her man’s support and love and growing her own backbone as well. It looks like everything is hunky dory but then their exes resurface like bad pennies and the drama builds up. I love the epilogue in this book, the perfect finale to this fun-filled, heart-stopping epic romance involving the Davis siblings.

I push my hands from his shoulders and palm his jaw as his stubble prickles against my fingers while my hands wander up to his hair. His hat falls to the ground with a thud and I know he’s just as lost in me as I am in him, because he doesn’t even make a move to pick it up. He lets out a deep grunt when I mold myself against his body, seeking some sort of friction. The next thing I know, my back is against the door and he’s gripping my bottom. His mouth hits my jaw with a bite of his teeth, making a squeak of pleasure shoot up my throat, and his deep rumble of laughter reaches my ears as he presses me harder into the door with his hips. The heavy bulge of his erection against that spot makes me so desperate for him that I whimper in relief when his mouth finally closes over mine in a wet tangle of tongues.

I’ve never been kissed so thoroughly.

This is the kind of kiss that sets the bar for any that might follow.

The kind that shows you everything you’ve been missing and everything you never knew you wanted. I’m going to be comparing every kiss I ever have to my dark cowboy’s, even though I know there’s a good chance no one will ever compare. The sounds coming from my mouth, the ones being swallowed by his, are nothing short of needy. My hips move in tandem with the thrusts of his, and even though we’re both fully clothed, I know it won’t take much more of this for me to go off like the town’s fireworks on the Fourth of July.

“Fuck, you taste just like apple pie,” he whispers against my lips, breaking away with a gasp.

“Goddamn, I love apple pie,” he says before his mouth is back on mine, this time with a whole new kind of hunger deepening his kisses.

I’m held captive, enraptured. Then his hands move from my bottom to glide up my torso. He lifts his hard chest off mine and suddenly those delicious fingers are at my breasts. Even if I had big boobs his hands would dwarf them, I’m sure, but as it is he covers both with a firm grasp before adjusting his hold with a deft twist of the wrists. His mouth continues to feast on mine while his huge hands learn my body with slow movements. I tear my mouth from his with a breathy moan when he pushes my shirt up and slips his fingers into the cups of my bra to tweak my nipples.

“Oh, God,” I moan when he does it again.

“I can’t get enough of you,” he rumbles.

“Please,” I beg, not with the slightest clue as to what I’m begging for.

His hips dig even harder into mine as he leans back, supporting me against the door with that connection alone as he pulls my shirt off. The darkness makes me feel more confident than I normally would be, almost half naked with a man—no, a stranger.

“Yours too,” I tell him as his fingers move to unclasp my bra. “I want to feel your skin on mine,” I breathe, taking over the task so he’ll hopefully give me what I want.

I fumble in my haste to feel more of this dangerous arousal he’s creating in my body, but the second my bra is free and dangling toward the floor, his naked chest collides against mine, pushing me into the door with a force that sends the air rushing out of my lungs.

His mouth hits my collarbone at the same time his hands grasp my bottom, sliding me up the door until I feel the wet heat of his breath against my breast.

Then he stops.

Life can change in a split second, a minute moment, an infinite hour.

For Laura Hamilton, her split second lasted 2,880 minutes. 48 hours to be exact. She barely escaped with her life. With a body full of scars and a heart full of hurt, the twenty-nine-year old clothes designer spent the following eight years clouded with grief, believing herself to be too broken to ever see the beauty in her surroundings again.

After a last-ditch attempt to scrape some semblance of her pieces together goes disastrously wrong, Laura’s pushed pin guides her to the sleepy village of Beaufort. No longer content to hide behind her sister, or languish in the depths of her sorrow, she finds a measure of peace among paranoia and fear, carving out an existence she is almost comfortable with.

Laura inadvertently catches the eye of the enigmatic hotelier and newcomer, Lucca Rinaldi. For the first time, her heart begins the slow trip towards letting another man into her life. Passion and pain go hand in hand when the couple finally meet.

Little does she know that Lucca’s history is not so far in the past as he thinks. His troubled affairs follow hot on his heels, bringing scorn and hate back into her fold. When their pasts collide with explosive consequences, Laura’s bitter memories threaten to pull her under when a walking nightmare crashes back into her life, bringing terror along for the ride.

The seconds are counting down – but who gets to call time?

This is the second book to the Razer series and continues the story of sisters Laura and Taylor and best friends Lucca and Ryder. This romantic suspense novel is written in multiple points of view.

Calling Time deals with characters that are emotionally damaged, dealing with their horrific past and tackles domestic abuse. A well written story, a tale of love, pain and resilience. This is not your ordinary fluffy feel good kind of romance. Lucca and Laura both have broken pasts. Lucca is trying to deal with his soon to be ex wife, Stella and Laura running from her past and her ex- fiancé.

The relationships amongst the main characters are extensively explored and you grasp the family dynamics between Laura and her sister Taylor, how they rely on each other’s strengths to get them through the trauma of their pasts. Lucca’s close bond with his son Ayden, his best friend Ryder and the toxic relationship with his wife, Stella make you want to dig deeper into his psyche. Why does a person allow things to happen and not do something about it?

This story is fast paced and addresses serious issues that makes you want to psychoanalyse each character. I admire Laura’s new found strength when faced with the monster from her past. Will Laura choose to shed her chains of trauma and embrace a new beginning with Lucca? How does one get rid of a psychotic, vengeful and evil ex?

Some books you can read and skim through quickly and the endings are quite predictable, not this one though. Author KA Sands creates characters and situations in this story that draws you in deeper. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it.

This is the second book of A Black Ops romance featuring one of the characters from the 707 research and development team. The first book was about Lily and Lennox and book 2 is about Jasper, the playboy of the group and Emily, Lily’s friend.

Told in dual points of view, the reader is introduced into Jasper’s revolving door of women and his all consuming guilt from his dark past. Jasper’s charismatic and brooding character is what draws Emily, a military widow with a six year old boy Jason. This series has more than a few secondary characters and it takes a few chapters before one can remember who is who and who killed who but after a quarter of the story one finally connects the dots. I must say that I can’t help but compare Emily and Jasper’s complex relationship to Lenox and Lily’s sizzling chemistry. Emily and Jasper’s first meeting didn’t go well especially when he learned she has a son. A few months later they meet again and they are obviously attracted to each other and there is a connection but it goes a bit complicated. Jasper flexes his alpha male abs and declares he is going to take charge of Emily and her son when a threat from Emily’s past presents itself. This is a slow burn romance but when this two finally get their act together it is steaming hot!

There are a few angsty moments but for me the better part of this book is the high octane drama and action with entertaining banter within the men in the group: Jasper, Lenox, Levi Clark and Connor. Will Jasper’s emotional baggage weigh him down? Will Emily be able to carry Jasper’s burden and have their happy ever after?

This fast paced, action packed adventure romance is the perfect book to curl into on a cold Sunday afternoon. Watch out for Levi’s and Clark’s story next.

Title: One Shot

Series: Chances #1

Author: BJ Harvey

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: November 16, 2017

Boy meets girl, boy wins girl, boy nails girl—boy’s gone by morning.

I think for sure it must’ve been a dream because there’s no way a guy could look like that, touch me like that and be so in tune with me on every known level, and disappear, leaving me with nothing but a good story to tell my friends.
When he walks into my bar three months later, everything I thought I knew and what we’d had disappears in the blink of an eye and the blinding light of the three-carat diamond on his fiancée’s hand.

It seems what I thought was a dream is now my most complicated reality, and I’ve got absolutely no idea how to fix it – or if I even want to.

One of my favourite genres is second chance romance so if you are looking for a very emotional angst filled story this one is for you.

Kenzie, a bar manager met Millen for the first time when he came into town for a business trip. They were immediately attracted to each other but Kenzie is not into one night stands so she issued him a challenge. They instantly connected and seemed like they are onto a promising relationship but then when he left town he never got in touch again until after three months when he showed up at the bar with his fiancée, Lana, in tow.

I like Kenzie’s character she is honest, fiercely loyal and independent. Millen on the first half of the book appears to be the perfect guy but later on turned out to be weak in my opinion. His priorities and misguided family obligations do not make him a great character. The back story to Kenzie’s parents and Lana’s parents provides more drama to their complicated tale, quite interesting family dynamics there. Is Millen worthy enough to be given a second chance? He does love Kenzie but needs to man up, own his future and happiness with the woman he truly loves.

“Love isn’t perfect. It’s how you work through it all that’s important. The hard stuff, the obstacles, the highs, the lows, the triumphs and the tragedies. It’s a beautiful pain that’s always worth it if you’re both willing to work to make things right.”

“And when you find the one who you know is worth it, the one you’d do anything it took to be with, you grab hold and you don’t let go. Because the minute you do, you lose your shot.”

Millen and Kenzie’s story is an emotional rollercoaster, angsty and full of drama. One moment Millen is at the top of your book boyfriend list and in the next chapter he’s on your hit list. The author does a great job of drawing out a whirlpool of emotions from the reader with this contemporary romance and although some parts are predictable I still enjoyed reading this book.  Be prepared for the ride!

Present Day
I have tingles, and not the kind that feel great in all the right places. The ones I’m feeling right now are the hair-standing-up-on-the-back-of-your-neck, someone-walking-over-your-grave kind of feelings that you get when something bad is about to happen.
Unable to ignore them any longer, I turn around from my stock take sheet and come face to face with my worst nightmare.
Lana fucking Mason, childhood best friend turned high school nemesis and arch enemy, and…
A man stands beside her, his eyes as wide as mine and—if I’m not mistaken—he looks kind of pissed off. At me.
And just like that, this moment has just gone from bad to worse.
Hold on! I’m the one who should be annoyed, with him. It wasn’t me who did a disappearing act three months ago, and now he’s here, standing with her. Of all the fish in the sea, he had to go for the smelliest, rottenest one.
“Kenzie,” she says, all saccharine sweet, like she wouldn’t choke on the first dick that came close to her perfectly-made-up lips. “Long time no see.”
Forever wouldn’t have been long enough, Lana.
“We were in town running errands and thought we’d stop by. I wanted to let you know what I’ve been up to.” Without preamble, she holds out her hand as if she’s the Queen of Sheba and I’m a lowly minion at her bidding. But that’s the last thing I care about, given that I’m being blinded by a huge, shiny rock on her ring finger.
What in the ever-loving fuck?
I don’t get a chance to hide my surprise, or the fact that my eyes dart to Millen, his jaw twitching like crazy, his grey eyes that I remember turning molten with lust now blazing with some unreadable emotion.
Why is he angry at me when he must’ve known that I’d be here?
Lana turns her head and beams at him all doe-eyed and vomit-inducing, reaching out her arm to Millen before returning her attention to me, positioning herself to deliver the final death blow.
Then she says them. The words I don’t want to hear—let alone believe.
“I have amazing news. First, my daddy just bought this place. And second, meet Millen, my fiancé…”
Yep. Dead. Done. The see-ya-later, don’t-let-the-door-hit-your-ass-on-the-way-out kind of done.
Then Drew walks through the front door. Drew who warms my bed most nights. Finally, a friendly face.
However, one look at Lana’s expression and I know this moment has just gone from bad to plain awkward. It’s like the universe is making a joke at my expense.
Drew’s already big smile grows impossibly larger when he spots the two people standing in front of me.
“Mills!” he says, pulling Millen into a man-hug the likes of which I’ve never seen Drew hand out before. He turns to the she-bitch and wraps his arms around her too. “Lans.”
“What are you guys doing here?” Drew asks.
“You know them?” I blurt out, my brain unable to engage quick enough to care about putting a filter in place.
Millen’s eyes snap to Drew then back to me. “You know Drew?” he asks at the same time as Lana juts a hip to the side and asks Drew, “You know Kenzie?”
“Millen is my best friend from college,” Drew happily informs me, and his smile falls at the same time that all of the blood rushes from my face.
Awkward, meet Mortifying. Also here are Shame, Embarrassment, Anger, Disgust, and over in the corner there is Complete and Utter Confusion and her friend I’m Going to Have to Move to the States and Join a Women-Only Commune with Cats and Unlimited Batteries.
With nothing else to say—at least, nothing that wouldn’t take a bottle of Jack and a whole lot of time—I decide to just go with the flow and revert to my old trusty auto-pilot because seriously, what else is there for me to do?
“Soooo, would anyone like a drink?”
