Wow, this book titillates the reader in all the right places! I tried putting Hunting’s latest offering down at daft o’clock but to no avail ‘cause it’s far, far too addictive. And although it’s a romantic comedy, the author’s take on a delicate subject gave the story such a sensitive touch it got me sniffling into my pillow more than once. Hunting’s gone back to ice hockey with this stand-alone spinoff from the highly popular Pucked Series which also happens to be a sport I adore. A Lie for a Lie is a marvellous read in the respect that most of the characters are lovely, relatable and makes you want to be with them.

“Thank you for being my personal support person and human teddy bear.”

Chapter one and we’re in the now, RJ crossing paths with the gorgeous and timid Lainey. He picks up on her intense discomfort, calms her down and is so understanding, my heart melted. Ahh, but not being entirely frank with her could just come back and bite him where it hurts the most. Hmm…where could that be you may ask! I loved the way Hunting set the foundation of the plot so quickly, had me on edge and provoked all the feels at a page-turning pace.

‘There were a lot of women in a very short span of time. Sometimes more than one at a time. It was bad. I’m not proud.’

Well-known as a lady’s man, RJ’s got it all. NHL team captain, his drop-dead gorgeous looks attract the puck bunnies like bees to a honeypot. Not happy with the way he’s been running his personal life, he wants to escape their advances and be that normal kinda guy for a while. I really and truly liked RJ. Obviously well off, he never flaunts it. His teammates respect him, he gets on with their women, loves their kids and has a fabulous rapport with his siblings. In fact, I couldn’t find fault with him yet when he doesn’t come clean with Lainey, I could have strangled him.

“…And even if she’s willing to talk to me, once she realizes what else I left out she’ll probably never want to speak to me again.”

Lainey won be over at the drop of a hat. Her contrasting traits which funnily enough don’t clash, are so well-described that I ended up rooting for her throughout the read. To begin with, she comes across as quite nerdy. Her love of marine life is the reason she’s taken a trip to Alaska but she never expected her time there would evolve as it did. Everything goes wrong only to be righted. However, what would happen leaves confusion in its wake. Even though she’s shy, she’d learnt to trust RJ and thought he had the same feelings for her as she had for him. Indeed, Hunting gave the story a powerful edge with all the goings-on and in the process, my attention didn’t waver for a minute.

“My respect for you just went up a few notches. I had no idea you were into the nerdy chicks.”
“She’s not nerdy,”

Although the book isn’t split into two parts, there’s definitely a before and after-feel about it. The after hit me just as strongly since everything comes pouring out. And believe you me, I wasn’t the only person who was left stunned, shocked, even dazzled! I can’t say anything regarding the outcome of them finding each other again but wow, Hunting most certainly nipped it in the bud with her brilliant story-telling.

Despite the team camaraderie and family ambience bowling me over, I had very mixed feelings for Lainley’s parents and saluted her when she stood up for herself. The title also gave me food for thought and I’d love you to decide for yourselves if not being honest can be considered a lie. In this case, distorting the truth and letting it slide was a lot easier than finding that perfect moment to confess. Of course, the big question here is will they forgive each other. I can’t tell you how much I loved RJ and Lainey’s story overflowing with tenderness, surprises and plenty of smiles. Bravo Hunting!

Ten per cent into the book and the pages were already heating up. It certainly felt like Chase had done a reversal by not holding back on the steaminess when actually, this couldn’t be further from the truth. You’ll know what I mean when you dive into Getting Played, but one thing’s for sure, she managed to get this reader hot and bothered pretty darn quick. Something that’d slipped my mind is that Chase’s bedroom scenes are magnificent. Not sure if I should use this adjective but they simply are. And I could have kicked myself for not having caught up with her books, especially Getting Schooled. Although it’s the first book in the Getting Some duet, I never felt I’d missed out.

‘Dean’s body is a wonderland, and I explore every bit of it. And he plays me like an instrument.’

Now then, apart from seriously contemplating grabbing a fan, my next impression was that there’s so much more to this contemporary romance than meets the eye. I wasn’t wrong. Chase writes with an immense amount of flair, capturing my attention from beginning to end. Bit of advice here; I started the book at daft o’clock which wasn’t such a good idea. Apart from the sleep deficit, trying not to disturb my better half while reading in bed wasn’t easy, either.

“I have this theory, it’s stupid. Life is full of surprises — good and bad. And this one. . . ”

Oops, Dean Walker forgot to ask for her phone number while on a summer tour with his band! Back in Lakeside, his other love is teaching and boy, would I have liked to have a maths teacher like him! He’s really good at what he does and gives his students confidence, even lets them ask personal questions if they earn the privilege. Cheeky monkeys! They don’t hold back once they get going.

“You can ask anything — that’s the whole point. Hit me.”

Yet observing him deliberate over that one night he’d spent with the woman who left without much ado had me grinning from ear to ear. It’s always been the other way round and he can’t quite get around that fact or stop thinking about her. Hmm…just maybe she’s the one who got away, but there’s nothing he can do about it. So, is he a tad big-headed? Well, yes and I was pretty pleased his ego was brought down a notch or two.

‘It happens. When you’re good looking, naturally charming teacher, student crushes come with the territory.’

Lifestyle blogger extraordinaire, Lainey Burrows has an opportunity of a lifetime, doing up a run-down house in Lakeside. Her followers will be in for a treat ‘cause she’s about to show them how to save a penny or two, recycle and watch her refurbishing it. Single mum to a lad who’s older than his years and super intelligent, the poor chap never really fitted in but he does here. His school mates are cool and guess what, his teacher even cooler! Lainey is adorable. Her future pretensions regarding relationships made me kinda sad though. So when the unthinkable happens, her ‘let’s get on with it attitude’ and make the most of a situation she’d never envisaged being in, literally bowled me over.

“You know you’re, like, the best kid ever right?”
“I do okay.”

Please, please don’t read the blurb. I went in blind and it really paid off. The surprise is a game-changer for Dean, no pun intended, and if I’d been swooning over him before, he’s now left me in a right blubberin’ mess! Chase has made her characters come alive in a love story where the dialogue flows with no boundaries, perfect banter in realistic surroundings and romance….this is it! I loved the secondary characters, the family feel-good take on the story is blinkin’ marvellous, and the emotions…WOW! My recommendation. Read it. Bravo Chase and thanks for the Star Wars mention. That tickled me pink!

“Boba Fett didn’t say that.”
“No?”
“The actual quote is ‘He’s no good to me dead.’ ‘Cause he was, you know, talking about Han Solo.”

I was looking forward to reading this author’s work as I have never read any of her books before. The first of a trilogy, this is a story of two interesting but imperfect characters from eminent families.

Elizabeth is the only daughter of a wealthy and prominent businessman with political ambitions to the highest office. With her pedigree, you’d think she is the typical princess but is exactly the opposite. In her father’s eyes, she is lacking in qualities that make her the perfect daughter. She has daddy issues and is always striving to get his approval.

Carter is a musical prodigy and comes from a loving family background but he has serious issues and has fallen out of grace from the public. He needs to redeem himself and is struggling to win back their trust.

The first chapter begins as a flashback to Carter and Beth’s first meeting when the author introduces us to their families. Beth’s father rules the small Texan town of Winsome. She craves for her father’s love but he only sees her as a commodity and a pawn for his quest to achieve political fame. Carter is considered the “odd” one in his famous reality TV family, he is a much-loved member but spirals downhill when he finds out about a secret.

Whilst I found the storyline riveting, there is something about Beth that kept me from connecting with her character. She is a naive twenty-one-year-old girl and her bad decisions annoyed the heck out of me. She is definitely not the perfect heroine, but I do hope that in book two she develops that much-needed backbone. The Machiavellian antagonist in this tale is intriguing in such a way that I wonder how the author can make this character possibly even eviler in the follow-up book. Let’s wait and see!

The attraction between Carter and Beth is undeniable right from the start but the turn of events that happen after their first meeting keeps them apart for most of the book’s timeline. Of course, we are all rooting for these two lovers to reunite and although the plot twist in the last chapter is somewhat predictable, I can’t wait to read the next installment. The characters in this saga are flawed but that doesn’t make their story less fascinating. Thank goodness I don’t have to wait too long for the next one as I am dying to find out how Beth and Carter’s story pans out.

THE GIVER OF STARS by Jojo Moyes is now available worldwide!

Today we are so excited to be sharing KFF’s review for #1 bestselling author of Me Before You, After You and Still Me, Jojo Moyes’ all-new historical novel, THE GIVER OF STARS, now available worldwide

Set in Depression-era America, a breathtaking story of five extraordinary women and their remarkable journey through the mountains of Kentucky and beyond, from the author of Me Before You and The Peacock Emporium

Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England.  But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically.

The leader, and soon Alice’s greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who’s never asked a man’s permission for anything. They will be joined by three other singular women who become known as the Horseback Librarians of Kentucky.

What happens to them–and to the men they love–becomes a classic drama of loyalty, justice, humanity and passion. Though they face all kinds of dangers, they’re committed to their job–bringing books to people who have never had any, sharing the gift of learning that will change their lives.

Based on a true story rooted in America’s past, The Giver of Stars is unparalleled in its scope.  At times funny, at others heartbreaking, this is a richly rewarding novel of women’s friendship, of true love, and of what happens when we reach beyond our grasp for the great beyond.

SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE!

“Knowledge is important, don’t you think? We all say at the library, without facts we really do have nothing.”

When one of your all-time favourite authors announces a new novel, it really did give me a reason to read the blurb even though historical fiction is not my first choice of genre. Primarily, I’m a mood reader and choose to read what I really fancy at the time. However, once I read the synopsis, I was hooked!

This story is set in 1930’s post-depression era rural Kentucky and centres around the story of five young women.  As history tells us, Eleanor Rooverselt was a huge reader and believed reading gave people a chance at a better life, so she sets up a scheme to introduce literacy to every corner of the US.  She creates The Pack Horse Library which is what these five incredible women help set up. The First Lady was a forward-thinking woman of her time and history shows what huge strides she achieved for the rights of women in America.

“I sometimes think you love these mountains as much as I do. I think I might like them better than anywhere on earth. I just feel … more myself up here.”

It’s clear to see Ms Moyes has done her homework and weaves an unbelievable tale of fiction interwoven with historical fact.   As you can imagine, five women setting up such a scheme brings its ups and downs. What I really loved about the story is that Moyes doesn’t focus this book on one particular character which for me enhanced the reading experience even more. The challenges these women face are one of bravery and wonder and at times I did feel the emotion building to a point where I just couldn’t stop reading.  It must be said that these women were all from very different backgrounds which brought a fantastic dynamic to the story.  It would’ve been very easy to pit these women against each other on their journey. Instead, they fought together towards an objective very important and personal to all of them. The love and support they showed each other and the risks they took were nothing short of awe-inspiring. In times where women were told what they could and most importantly couldn’t do, they bravely did and played by their own rules.

“We women face many unexpected challenges when we choose outside what are considered our habitual boundaries”

The writing was simply brilliant which I have come to expect from Ms Moyes. I could wax lyrical about this book for a long time. The character development was fantastic considering five women were all fully involved in the story arc. Not at any time was I left wanting. All extremely lovable women who not once gave me reason to shout out loud at my Kindle! This story has to be one of the best reads that focused on the friendships of women in a time of such hardship. It’s been some time since I finished this compelling read only now life has not given me a chance to write my feelings down however, the story is still very fresh in my mind. This book would be amazing translated onto the big screen. The scenery conjured up a rural Kentucky in my mind so vibrant and breathtaking, it would be simply incredible!

Praise for The Giver of Stars:

Utterly enchanting

I loved this dashing adventure set in 1930s Kentucky, America. Intensely moving and crammed with romance and emotion, this is a full-pack-of-tissues novel.

An entertaining, immersive and moving read. The Giver of Stars is rip-roaring popular fiction . . . but it is also a novel that celebrates education, intellectual curiosity and, above all, books and the knowledge, comfort, company and power that they can bring. Moyes shines a light on a historic footnote to pay tribute to women’s work, endurance and female solidarity Sunday Times

“With characters so real they feel like dear friends and a compelling storyline, this is a beautiful, special novel. I loved it and didn’t want it to end!”
Liane Moriarty, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Big Little Lies

“Moyes brings an often forgotten slice of history to life. . . the true power of the story is in the bonds between the women of the library. . . A love letter to the power of books and friendship.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“Epic in scope and fiercely feminist. . . an unforgettable story.”

Timeless, Jojo Moyes’ greatest work yet, and one of the most exquisitely-written – and absolutely compulsory – novels about women ever told. Brilliant and perfect and will remind you of why you read; even of why you breathe
