Thank you so much for taking time out to answer KFF’s questions, Nina. We’ll try not to repeat questions which you must have been asked hundreds and hundreds of times—but here goes!
Q. We recently read One the Corner of Love and Hate and enjoyed it immensely. We’re also looking forward to reading the other two stand-alones in the Hopeless Romantic series. Where does your inspiration come from?
Thank you for having me! The inspiration was my love of small-town romances, and how much I try and encourage people to go out and vote. I’m a bit of a nag about it!
Q, We often wonder how you choose the names of your characters. Is it like lightning strikes in the middle of a supermarket queue?
I have a list on my phone. Names I like, names friends have used in books are listed as ‘no’s’ unless they’re secondary characters. I try and match the name to the character as best I can. Sometimes, they even change as the characters develop!
Q. One the Corner of Love and Hate revolves around small-town politics and we found that a real eye-opener. Any reason you chose this subject?
Every election matters. Big, small, national or local. Sometimes, what might seem like the most inconsequential thing is decided by how we vote. I really wanted to stress that.
Meet Me is Henry and Emma’s old friend Charlotte, someone who grew up in Hope Lake but then left abruptly. Their story is different because you’ve got someone who had a connection but left. Then Ingredients is a total transplant who has zero connection but finds herself smitten with Nick.
Q. As The Ingredients of You and Me is set in Hope Lake, will we be seeing more of Emma and Cooper!
Yep! All three, and the novella will be in Hope Lake and everyone makes appearances but they’re stand-alones.
Q. One of your favourite quotes from On the Corner of Love and Hate?
I loved writing about Emma’s parents. Sophia has a couple good one-liners.
Q. When did you feel like a writer?
I’ll let you know when I feel it! It’s still so new to be on ‘this side’ of things if that makes sense. I might need someone to pinch me.
Q. What is the most rewarding part of being an author?
The connections. I’m in a bit of an interesting position as I’ve worked with so many amazing authors, editors, publicists and reviewers for years. I’m so grateful for the support shown to me.
Q. How long does it normally take for you to write a novel?
3 months or so. I am ENVIOUS of anyone that writes fast.
Q. How many years have you been writing?
It seems like forever.
Q. Big question for so many frustrated possible newbies who want to take the plunge into the writing world. Any suggestions about how they should go about it?
Sylvain Reynard tells everyone this. “Write daily.” If it’s a hundred words or three thousand. Do it. And stay confident.
Q. Sounds like good advice, seeing as most of us bloggers are frustrated writers! Another biggie! Do you read all your book reviews? It must be difficult to please all your readers, so how do you cope with the negative ones?
Sometimes. The reviews are for the readers though, not me. I hope people like the books of course, but I’ve tried to not focus on it. I’m so grateful to anyone that takes the chance.
Q. Do you listen to music while writing and if so, what kind?
Classical. If it has words, I find that I type them into the book!
Q. Your book covers are fabulous. Do you have the last say in them?
Gallery did an outstanding job on the covers. I have ZERO artistic vision when it comes to them. I can’t find a picture to use to save my life. I know what I like, but have no input in getting there LOL
Q. Which book left its mark on you?
Q. Can’t argue with you there. Especially The Alchemist which is one of our top novels of all time. What are you reading now?
A book with my 12 y/o son about Refugees called ILLEGAL. It’s a graphic novel by the author Eoin Colfer, and it’s heartbreaking.
Q. How important are bloggers in the book world for you?
They’re wildly important. You can’t get your book in front of everyone and you desperately need the help. Blogging and reviewing is often a thankless job. You’re not being paid, you’re sometimes getting a lot of flack and yet, they still do it.
Q. We couldn’t agree with you more, but how important is promoting on social media sites for you?
It’s huge. There are hundreds of books out every day it seems. How do you get yours to stand out?
Q. Enough about books! What’s the first thing you do when you wake up apart from the norm, lol!
Wish I could sleep for 5 more minutes.
Q. We’re curious. When you’re not writing, what do you really like doing?
Legos! It’s been a hobby since I was a kid and thankfully my son also loves them.
Q. How would your best friend describe you?
Sun, beach, mountains, snow?
Q. Your ideal day. Who would you choose to be with?
Q. Favourite word?
Q. What you’d most likely not say?
P@nt!e$ or m0!$t
Q. Youngsters, elders or both?
I love kids!
Q. Favourite colour. Why?
Navy blue. I don’t know, I just love it.
Q. Your philosophy in life?
Life is too short to be miserable.
Q. Any message you’d like to give your readers?
Thank you for taking the chance 🙂
Where can your readers find you?
Twitter, but I curse a lot!
