Two hours and three beers later, I was sober.

Taz couldn’t say the same. She was beyond buzzed, which both Cross and Race were just shaking their heads over. Me, I’d like to think I was more open-minded and accepting. Yeah. I surprised myself. Taz wasn’t slurring her words, but she’d told me for the eighth time how she loved me and viewed me as a sister.

After the ninth time, Cross finished his beer. “Yeah.” He turned to Race, who was on a log parallel to us. “Thinking it’s time my sister goes home?”

Race barely acknowledged Cross, just the slightest of nods. “Have you tried taking her home when she gets like this?” He raised his eyebrows now. “Not so easy. Your sister gets feisty.”

“Fuck yeah, I do!” She burped, raising her beer in the air and then surged to her feet. Jumping up on the log, she hollered right as she started to fall down, “Hey everyone!” I grabbed her legs, steadying her.

I don’t think Taz even noticed. She raised her beer even higher, her shirt lifting from the movement. “Who’s here from Roussou?!”

A cheer rose up.

“Hell yeah, we are!”

“Yes!”

“Us!”

“Boo.”

She waited until they quieted, burped again, and yelled out, “Raise your beers, Fuckers! ‘Cause we’re Roussou and we’re proud! Helllll yeah!”

Another roar went over the group nearest us, traveling to the other trucks, along with a few grumbles.

Cross groaned, “Like I said.” He hit Race’s leg. “Take her home, Fucker.”

Race glared back. “You take her home. She’s your sister.”

“She’s your girlfriend.”

“Boys. Seriously.” Tabatha sauntered over, sitting on the empty log across from our bonfire.

I looked, but she was alone. “Where’s Jordan?”

“Checking on Zellman.”

I pointed to the next truck. Zellman was in the back of the truck, a girl on his lap. “He’s right there. And the point of a buddy system isn’t to leave while your partner is checking on someone else.” I was saying that as I was rising to my feet, already scanning the party area.

I hadn’t been taking stock while we were sitting, mostly because it was nice to sit and talk with Taz and Race. But now, seeing nine trucks spread out over the area, bonfires spread throughout and all the people walking around, some going into the woods, but most staying in the lot, I was a little taken aback at how many people were there. The lot was huge, but there were more people there than I realized.

“Where is he?” I asked under my breath as Cross and Race climbed up on their logs, looking too.

We were looking. Looking.

We were not seeing him.

“What the fuck?” Race growled, shooting Tabatha a look. “You dropped the ball, Sweets.”

She’d been all cool and relaxed, but now she stood with us. “What? How far could he get…?” She trailed off as she was looking too.

“What direction did he go?” Cross asked.

“I—” She gulped, starting to pale. She had a beer in hand, her hand clutching it tightly. “I don’t know. He just said he was going to check on Z, then come find me.”

I went truck by truck.

Truck one, no Jordan.

Cross moved so he was standing next to me. “Which one are you on?”

He knew what I was doing.

“I’m on two now, going to three next.”

He pivoted. “Working on the last truck then. Race, check the parking lot. Tabatha, study the treeline.”

We were working as a team. Taz had started a Roussou cheer. Tabatha was groaning under her breath, looking, “Oh my God. What if something happened to him? Oh my God…” And repeat. She didn’t shut up for the next few minutes as we were all looking.

Two was clear.

Three, the same.

Four, still no Jordan.

Cross was counting down as he cleared the end of the line. “Eight. Seven. Six.”

We both were on five at the same time. Still no Jordan.

“He would stick out. He’s the tallest guy here,” Race was saying. “Fuck, guys.”

We knew. But it was decision time now.

I had my phone out, typing a text as Cross pressed his own phone to his ear. He was calling while I was texting. I spoke as my thumb was moving over the keys, “Tabatha.” My voice was calm, but my blood pressure was not. It was spiking all the way up.

“Yeah?” She rushed to my side. “What can I do to help? I’m so sorry, you guys. Honestly. He sent me over here. I didn’t think—I trust Jordan. He usually knows what’s best to do—”

I cut her off. Her rambling wasn’t helping in that second. “I need you to pull your phone out and send a group text to as many people as you can. We need eyes on Jordan, now. Text. Then do group chats on all your social media.”

“Okay. I can do that.” She pulled her phone out, and dropped it in her rush. Picked it back up, and dropped it again. “Shit! Shit! Shit! Okay.” She breathed out, exhaling deep. “I can do this. I can do this.”

“YEAH, WE’RE ROUSSOU AND WE’RE FUCKING PROUD!”

Since she was already shouting, I tugged on her shirt and said, “Start cheering Jordan’s name.”

“—FUCKING PROUD—JORDAN! JORDAN! JORDAN!”

Phones were lighting up. People were starting to look around. The word was spreading, and those who weren’t checking their phones started in with her chant.

Cross turned to me. “Let’s move. It’s time to start looking ourselves.”

I clipped my head in a nod, getting off my log.

“What should we do?” Race stepped toward us.

Taz was still thrusting her fist in the air, leading the chants. Why, I had no clue, but I gestured to her now. “Watch over her. If Jordan’s actually missing, pressure is good against whoever might be hurting him, but if he’s not missing, we don’t want to give the wrong people ideas. You know?”

He nodded, running a hand over his face. Bags suddenly seemed to appear under his eyes. “This whole rivalry thing is real, huh?”

COVER REVEAL ~ THE DAY HE CAME BACK by Penelope Ward

Today we have the cover reveal for New York Times, USA Today and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author Penelope Ward’s all-new contemporary romance stand-alone, THE DAY HE CAME BACK. Releasing 19th August, check out the gorgeous cover we have for you!

It was the summer of my life.
I’d met the guy of my dreams.
Unfortunately, he was the son of my uppity employer—and very much off-limits.
But Gavin was a rebel. He knew his mother would disown him if she found out about us; in his eyes, we just had to be careful.
He never treated me as his mother did—like hired help.
Instead, Gavin put me on a pedestal and loved me harder than I’d ever been loved in my life.

What a summer it was.
Until it all ended—badly.

I was never supposed to see Gavin again.
That didn’t stop me from thinking about him every day for ten years.
I knew little about his life now, just that he was an entrepreneur living an ocean away.

When a twist of fate had me working again in the very place our love affair started a decade earlier, I knew it was only a matter of time before I might see him again.
But I wasn’t prepared.
What if he hated me?
What if he loved someone else now?
I wasn’t prepared for all the unknowns.

And most of all, I wasn’t prepared for today to be the day he came back.

Q&A ~ MAKING UP by Helena Hunting

This must-read romantic comedy enthralled us!

MAKING UP, an all-new laugh-out-loud standalone from New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting is now available.

And today we have a Q&A with the author and an excerpt for you!

Making Up_ebook.jpg

Making Up_ebook.jpgCosy Felton is great at her job—she knows just how to handle the awkwardness that comes with working at an adult toy store. So when the hottest guy she’s ever seen walks into the shop looking completely overwhelmed, she’s more than happy to turn on the charm and help him purchase all of the items on his list.

Griffin Mills is using his business trip in Las Vegas as a chance to escape the broken pieces of his life in New York City. The last thing he wants is to be put in charge of buying gag gifts for his friend’s bachelor party. Despite being totally out of his element, and mortified by the whole experience, Griffin is pleasantly surprised when he finds himself attracted to the sales girl that helped him.

As skeptical as Cosy may be of Griffin’s motivations, there’s something about him that intrigues her. But sometimes what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas and when real life gets in the way, all bets are off. Filled with hilariously awkward situations and enough sexual chemistry to power Sin City, Making Up is the next standalone in the Shacking Up world.

We’re a couple of minutes away from my apartment, which also means we’re almost at the end of our date. End-of-date protocol often means a goodnight kiss.
And I’ve eaten onions. Lots of them. What the hell was I thinking? I feel around in my shorts pocket, hoping I have a random stick of gum. I find a tiny square packet and pull it out, along with an old tissue. I shove that back in my pocket and sigh with relief as I carefully open the Listerine Pocketpak. There’s one strip left. I pop it in my mouth, wishing I had water since my mouth is dry and I’m suddenly super nervous.
Griffin pulls up in front of my apartment building. I swallow a bunch of times, trying to get the strip to dissolve on my tongue and glance out the tinted window, seeing it from his perspective. I don’t live in a bad part of town, but I sure as hell wouldn’t leave this car sitting out here for any length of time unless I wanted it keyed or stripped down.
Griffin shifts into park and turns to me, one hand resting on the back of my seat near the headrest. “I had a great time, Cosy.”
“Me too, thanks for dinner.” I tried to fork over my share, but he was quick on the credit card draw.
“It was my pleasure.” He leans in the tiniest bit, a nonverbal cue that he’s going in for a kiss.
I mirror the movement, giving him the go ahead. My stomach flutters in anticipation. I exhale slowly through my nose. Even though the Listerine strip should be doing its job to mask the onions, I don’t want to ruin the moment by breathing that in his face.
His fingertips skim my jaw, and I close my eyes. And then his lips brush my cheek. I wait for them to move a couple of inches to the right, but after what feels like a lot of seconds—and is probably only a few—I crack a lid.
Griffin is still close, a wry smile on his lips and a smolder in his eyes.
“Seriously, that’s it? A kiss on the cheek?”
His smile widens, making his eyes crinkle at the corners. He’s nothing like the guys I usually end up on dates with. College boys don’t take things slow. If I were out with one of the guys from school, I’d be sitting in a beat-up Civic with some stupid music playing, and he’d be all over me with his tongue halfway down my throat, copping a feel.
“I thought all the onions you ate were the equivalent to garlic for vampires.” Griffin fingers my hair near my shoulder. I’d really like him to finger something else. Wait. I mean I’d like to feel his hands on me. Not in my pants. Okay, maybe I’d like them in my pants, but not after date number one.
“I wasn’t thinking, and I really like onions. A lot. In hindsight, it’s not a great date food. I feel kinda dumb. And I guess at first I wasn’t so sure about you. How was I supposed to know you’d actually be kind of normalish?”
“Normalish?”
“Well, you drink club soda on purpose, so you can’t be all there.” I tap his temple.
Griffin circles my wrist with his fingers and drops his head, lips brushing over my knuckle. “We can’t all be perfect, now, can we?”
“I suppose not, and perfect is boring.”
“That it is.” He hums against my skin, and I feel it through my entire body. “I would like to try that kiss again, if you’re still interested.”

Q&A ~ MAKING UP

Q  What inspired you to write Making Up?

A  I’d introduced Griffin in the previous Shacking Up Series novels, Shacking Up and Hooking Up—he was a bit of a mystery for readers because he was talked about, but not really present. I had a very clear picture in my mind of who he was, and the kind of woman who would end up being the perfect fit for him, and it was not his fiancé from the previous books.

Q  Introduce us to your main characters!

A  Griffin Mills is the oldest of the three Mills brothers. At thirty-three, he’s had several very long term relationships and was formerly engaged, but that relationship went up in flames. He’s gorgeous, smart, loves the numbers side of the family business he’s part of—a chain of hotels he’s set to inherit with his brothers. Also, he’s a little awkward, which I love, because there’s nothing quite like a hot guy who doesn’t have all the lines and fumbles a bit when he’s dealing with someone he’s attracted to. It makes for some hilarious banter with his love interest, Cosy Felton. Our heroine is a twenty-two-year-old who has been a bit of a nomad for most of her life, but is finally finishing school and happens to work at an Adult Toy Store part-time. It’s definitely not her favourite job, but it pays the bills. She’s sassy, not much of a planner and definitely more than Griffin bargained for.

Q  Lots of aspiring authors out there. Any advice for them?

A  Just keep writing. Every day put words on the page and surround yourself with positive people who are there to support you. Ask questions, join book groups, be an avid reader and an observer.

Q  How is Making Up different from your other books?

A  Making Up has a trope I’ve never really explored or played around with before, so it was a lot of fun to write. While I’ve written age gaps before, it hasn’t been a key part of the storyline, or had a significant impact on how the characters perceive the relationship. Griffin and Cosy are from two very different worlds and balancing their expectations and insecurities was one of my favourite parts of writing their story. Making Up has my signature quirky, sassy heroines and I love writing heroes that are sexy, yet a little awkward. While it’s a light read, there’s some drama, and some heavy baggage, which I think grounds the story and balances out the hilarity.

Q  I know asking someone’s all-time favorite book is a loaded question so what’s your current favorite read?

A  I’ve been so lucky to read so many amazing books this year but I’m going to go with Broken Knight by LJ Shen which releases this August. I love YA/NA romance and angst, and she knows how to deliver both flawlessly.

Q  Alright, the ultimate question: why should we read your book?

We all need a little escape from our own realities once in a while and Making Up is a fun, sexy romance that’s perfect for the summer. Also, Griffin is hot, and not particularly suave at times. I think we can all appreciate a guy who doesn’t have all the lines, especially if he looks like he should.

Q  A famous movie producer wants to make your books into movies and they want you to cast your characters from Making Up. Which actors/actresses make the cut?

A  This is always a fun question and I’ll be 100% honest, I never actually look at actors prior to writing a story because I generally have a picture of the character in my head. But, I went on a Pinterest mission and Alex Morgan (she’s a soccer player, not an actress) would make a fabulous Cosy if she suddenly switched career paths. Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee) is super sassy, and could definitely play up the humor in this story, so she would be a legitimate actress choice. Gabriel Macht has a great smolder and can rock a seriously sexy suit, so I think he’d be great as Griffin.

Q  Favorite quote or scene you wrote in Making Up?

A  Making Up is definitely a rom-com with some incredibly hilarious moments, but Griffin has some heavy baggage, which means there are also serious moments, and this is one of my favourites: “Talk to me. Fall apart on me. Show me your weakness so I can give you my strength.”

Q  What inspired you to become a writer?

A  I’ve always loved to write, but finding time was a challenge during university and then afterward I was building a career and we renovated a house down to the studs—which takes up a lot of time and doesn’t leave much of an opportunity for putting down words (but it was an amazing experience). When I gave birth to my daughter she struggled to sleep—or rather stay asleep—and that meant I spent a lot of time awake in the middle of the night. So I started writing again during those late nights, and finally penned my first full novel.

Q  What is a typical writing day like?

A  I usually start with a run and then copious amounts of coffee while I manage the administrative side of things—ie emails, social media posts etc. But when I sit down to write I have a playlist I put on repeat, more coffee, sparking water (so I can stay hydrated) and my cat Pumpkin generally lies on top of my closed laptop and supervises me for the day.

Q  Do you have any interesting writing quirks or habits?

A  I listen to the same playlist while I write a novel. So if it takes me two months, then I listen to the same set of songs for two full months. I’ve destroyed A LOT of albums for my husband over the past several years. I just need the background noise, and listening to the radio or unfamiliar songs can be distracting.

Q  What has been one of the most surprising things you’ve learned as a published author?

A  I’ve only been in the industry for five years and there has been so much change, learning to adjust and adapt and just staying true to your personal goal is really the most important thing I’ve learned. I think when you start out there are just so many unknowns, and taking risks can be scary, but if you don’t take those risks, it’s hard to grow as an author.

Q  Can you tell us about what’s coming up next after this for you writing wise?

A  I have one more book in The Shacking Up Series, HANDLE WITH CARE, which releases at the end of August! Griffin’s cousin and best friend, Lincoln Moorehead, is the hero and if you didn’t know, he is also Armstrong’s brother. Lincoln is the polar opposite of Armstrong so it was so fun to write. I can’t wait for people to meet Griffin and Cosy and Lincoln and Wren.

Q  How can readers connect with you online?

A  They can connect with me all over social media!

It isn’t news that I’m a diehard fan of Reiss. Goddess of romantic suspense and my go-to author, never in my dreams could I have imagined her writing a friends-to-lovers romance quite like this one! In fact, I’d as go as far as saying that it could be easily be classified under the rom-com genre as the classic one-liners had me laughing till my belly hurt. And don’t get me wrong, but highlighting all the quotes I liked became a tad tiresome! Whichever trope it may be, Reiss turned it inside out and back to front, making it work to a tee.

‘It was all a joke. A big, funny fantasy for our families’ benefit.’

I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting two such delightfully weird and wonderful families in a long while. And oh, my word…the banter is something else! Everyone’s trying to get a word in edgeways, giving crazy advice and them interrupting each other felt so natural and was so well-written that it was like being in the middle of their conversations. The part they play is an important one in the respect that both want two of their respective grown-up children to hmm… tie the knot! All said and done, Sebastian Barton and Rachel Rendell have reached their thirties and wedding bells are in the back of their parents’ minds. However, what one wants and what one gets is an entirely different thing.

“You like him.”
“I like him too much to marry him, if you want to know the truth.”

Young Sebastian who just happened to be Rachel’s new neighbour was on the receiving end from his school peers. Not only did she stand up for him, but she also became his best friend. And of course, the title gives away how one of them felt for the other. As future plans would have it, some things don’t quite work out how we want them to. Rachel went her way and he went his. A childhood pact was forgotten, or was it? It seemed that they needed a reminder and once found and much to Rachel’s dismay, the contract bought back her unaccomplished dreams.

“Anyway, we didn’t sign in blood.·
“We spit in our hands and shook on it.”
“I don’t know how I forgot that.”
“An exchange of DNA makes it official.”

If Sebastian were a scrawny but talented lad, now he’s a strappingly handsome guy and successful to boot. Rachel’s flowered in an unassuming beauty too and trying to keep their eyes off each other while carrying out their charade made me rub my hands with glee. What occurs before the supposedly big day gave me all the feels. This read has a little bit of everything and the unexpected certainly propelled the story towards some rather lusty scenes. However, emotions run high and not just because they’d got themselves into a pickle.

“Sebastian was the biggest nerd in school.”
“You know what happens to nerds. They get gorgeous and rich.”

Tiffany. I fell hard for Sebastian’s younger sister. Listening to brilliant sarcasm wasn’t lost on me, and ribbing her brother mercilessly along with her mobile phone shenanigans had me in fits. Can’t say I was taken with her taste in music but that’s another story.

“They were following that Instagram post of you and Sebastian. Do you know Tiffany has half a million people following her? All strangers.”
“She’s very active online,”

Have to say that although I liked Rachel hell of a lot, Sebastian won me over with his oh-so gentlemanly ways and the cardigan…bloody hilarious! Not your typical hero either, his actions spoke louder than words. Loved Roy, his quirky mum’s Guy-with-a-Pickup-Truck, and Joy and Rob Rendall are fabulous characters. It’s a book to get lost in this summer and I can’t recommend this beautiful couple’s love story enough. Bravo, Reiss!

“Yeah, I mean it. You find a guy who looks that hot in a grandpa sweater, you found a guy for life.”

“Plan a wedding?” he asked. “Just because it’ll make you happy?”

My first instinct was to minimize. Call it nothing. Say the plans didn’t have to be big. We could just say we were getting married in city hall in three years.

But I was committed to the pitch, and that meant no backpedaling.

“Yes. The whole thing. A hall. A band. A long white dress. A honeymoon in Paris. It’s all talk, but if we’re going to talk, we might as well talk big.”

“You really want to do this?” he whispered.

Did I? No, I didn’t. But even though it was an insane lie for an intangible result, something about it felt ambitious. As if fake dating him was fine and dandy but faking a marriage was reaching for the stars. Thinking small hadn’t gotten me anywhere. Somehow, this was going for the glory.

Leaning in to me, he breathed on my cheek. The arm he’d draped over the railing stroked my hair. His lips moved to my jaw while he caressed the back of my neck.

“Let’s do it,” I said. My brain had become completely untethered from my body. I would have said yes if he’d promised me a plate of chicken.

He kissed me, and for a second I didn’t kiss him back. I was too stunned at his gentleness. I was a feather pillow, bending under him, barely holding my shape.

I was going to regret this. He was handsome. He was a wonderful person. I wanted to kiss him. A little pucker. A little change in the angle of my head. A taste of his tongue on mine. A little groan I had no control over before we were in full make out.

Oh my God. My body was praying for more, and my mind was reminding me not to get attached because in the end he was still a guy I was attracted to, and guys I was attracted to broke my heart.

“Gross!” Tiffany said from the driveway. Not expecting to hear her so close, we yanked apart. “You’re eating her face, dweeb.”

She rolled her eyes so hard I could only see the whites.

“You came out here to criticize how I kiss my fiancée?”

I coughed.

It was on.

About CD Reiss

_21A6258_pp-fb.jpgCD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.
