Author Melonie Johnson’s romantic début comedy is a fun summer poolside novel that reads like a modern-day fairy tale and therein lies its charm. Getting hoots of laughter out of me, the serious touch woven into the story I found thought-provoking. That being said, I had trouble getting into the book to begin with but this minor setback didn’t spoil my overall enjoyment!
While on the last leg of her holiday with a group of friends from across the pond, American lass, Cassie Crow bumps into a Scotsman whose cheeky grin is to die for. And although Logan Reid’s sense of humour is second to none, his mischievous acts are, to say the least, outrageous. Nonetheless, this doesn’t put the blockers on their sizzling chemistry that’ll steam up the screen of your e-reader!
In Scottish lingo ‘randy’ means rude. But there’s nothing crass about Cassie and in the literal sense of the word, she’s game for a summer sexapade if the occasion with Mr. Right arises. Oops, no pun intended! So, her mission to scratch that itch takes a turn for worst when she’s caught red-handed in an embarrassing situation. However, the excitement of being in bonny Scotland and an even bonnier Scotsman all kilted up to the nines might just be the answer. Can she live down what happened to her though? She’s come prepared and saving the ahem…protection for the big day and to be honest with you, I couldn’t wait for her to crack the box open!
Sometimes, Cassie’s persona came across to me as naïve and overly forgiving. The reason I say this is because a couple of Logan’s wrongdoings irritated me no end, making me want to give him a good Kindle slap. It did; however, seem to give a more dramatic feel to the read. Both have some serious issues to deal with which to my liking, could have been addressed more. On a scale of one to ten book heroes’ rating, I’d give Logan a six and a half since I thought he could have been a bit more chivalrous at times.
Despite not being a huge fan of third-person narrative, the huge plus for me was how Johnson pulled off the Scottish accent so well. Getting Hot With The Scott is fairly well-paced and very character driven. It makes sense that thought had been put into Cassie’s friends’ personalities as some of them will soon be getting their own books in this stand-alone series. Plenty of banter between the gals kept me amused and the ending was delightfully surprising. A definite recommendation for a lazy weekend or summer escape reading.
