THE TRUTH ABOUT US (The Truth Duet, #2)
Truth: Penn Walker entered my life like a summer storm—dark, ominous, and filled with thunder.
After witnessing my husband’s murder, I didn’t have much of a heart left to offer a man.
But Penn took it all.
Every jagged shard.
Every broken bit.
Even the dirty and twisted pieces that I wish never existed.
Lie: I didn’t need him to save me.
Lie: I knew exactly who he was.
Lie: Losing him wouldn’t destroy me.
But that’s the thing about lies—you never know who to believe.

Before talking about The Truth Duet, I’d like to mention the book cover and titles which to my mind of thinking, were spot on. Both titles are simply perfect. When lies become truths, when layers of deceit are peeled away only to become cold facts. In The Truth About Lies, the author certainly made me doubt whether her hero’s strategy was the correct one. Saying that, it seemed to me to be a no-win situation whichever way he turned. So why then did I find The Truth About Us more gritty, suspenseful and riveting? Firstly, the truth about the protagonists is revealed after the author cracked the character and plot development in the first book. Now it’s time to sit back and really delve into this fast-paced, action-packed story.
Every page kept me on my toes, every chapter made me hold my breath. If the twists are subtle, just wait for the turns! And questions which had been niggling me would be answered. The stunning cover is so very them. I know it sounds terribly cliché…never judge a book by its cover but while reading, all I could see were these two gorgeous people who are made for one each other, who deserved a happy ending. Will they get it? you may ask yourselves. Just wait!
This is a lightish spoiler so for those of you who haven’t these books, please skip this paragraph. The ending in The Truth About Lies wasn’t at all what I’d expected. I honestly couldn’t suss out how Penn got himself out of such a tight spot when I thought he was put out of action. Did I miss something because I’m still wondering! As the whole scenario moved at lightning speed, I had to reread some parts again and was just as confused as Cora. However, later on the pieces fell into place.
The worst possible taint in a family Cora thought was well rid of rears its ugly head. Emotional blackmail not only threatens her loved ones, she’ll do anything to protect them. By now we know she never puts herself first. So, how she’s going to comply with such impossible demands from this manipulative individual was beyond me. He doesn’t simply ask, he takes and then gives back with strings attached. It’s a double-edged sword and someone’s going to get hurt regardless of what she does. She can’t trust a soul and although she puts her faith in Drew, many a time I captured her suspicious mind working overtime, questioning his motives. Certainly, a character to be reckoned with, I have to say how much I liked him. I loved the way he handled the whole debacle, always trying to control, always reassuring.
In steps our hero. Up until now, Cora had been completely left in the dark. In fact, why Penn acted as he did is out of utter devotion. Also, a deep-seated gnawing revenge had to be put to rest. He’s the man, the one who made sure Cora wasn’t going to go without. Neither did he think he’d find happiness but he’d have to fight tooth and nail for a semblance of normalcy. When the cat’s let out the bag, I got a tad upset with Cora. Forgiving Penn isn’t easy, but here he showed me what true love is, that everything he’d done had a good reason behind it, that saving more than one life was his duty.
Martinez spins an angst-ridden highly emotional tale, and although I found myself getting a tad jittery towards the finale, it was definitely worth the wait. I’d highly recommend giving this duet a chance. Bravo!
