KFF’s review ~ ON THE EDGE

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Reviewed by Sharon Thérèse at KFF

I can’t tell you how nervous I was when I picked up this book. I had no idea what to expect since in Reiss fashion, leaving her readers hanging on a precipice in all of her series is what she does, and exceedingly well I might add. Bloody hell, this is serious business. Did Greyson’s actions have an impact on her or Caden? Well, you’ll only find out what happens by reading this thrilling four-book series plus Cutting Edge: The Edge – Prequel. I never wanted it to end. Every installment is unputdownable and if it were ever possible, this one is even grittier and more mind-blowing.

What Greyson had done was out of love without any thought for her well-being, only for her husband’s. I shouldn’t have been surprised since this woman has proved herself to me time and time again that boundaries of any kind don’t exist as far as Caden is concerned. On rare occasions have I come across a heroine so selfless, determined and unwavering. She’ll do anything in her power to save him; however, her spontaneity had an unforeseen backlash. With the tables turned, she’s up against the biggest challenge of her life; their survival as a couple and much more besides. Although now, so to speak, it’s out of her hands.

“I knew it the first time I saw your face. You were a promise kept. I knew that if I let you go, I’d be breaking.”

Caden and Greyson breathe the same air and are in perfect sync with each other. If this book had been written with their unspoken words, I would have easily been able to decipher them. Having said that, the clock is ticking and becomes their worst enemy, a nightmare they have to face head-on. Being between a rock and a hard place, Caden is forced to grab the bull by the horns only making himself vulnerable to his superiors. Nor he or I ever doubted his wife’s needs come first. They are above and beyond any kind of technical inference, she is his to defend and protect.

‘Shirking duty went against every fiber of my being—except the ones that prioritized Greyson.’

It figured in Broken Edge that trust issues with a certain person abounded. In this read, an unexpected twist presented itself, leaving me aghast to a point where I wanted to throttle this individual. Yep, Kindle bashing thoughts ran deep!

“I’m just a doctor. But I promise you… if you separate us, I will find a way to destroy you.”

Reiss has developed multiple levels of tension that build up at such a speed, I felt as if I were on a helter-skelter spiraling out of control. I had loss of breath, had to reread passages stunningly beautiful, others provokingly heartbreaking. Sitting back, I thought about the consequences, highlighted, jotted down notes and put my hands together not in applause which will come later, but in sheer fear. Every chapter was like… what the heck is coming next, when will it end? The setting is harsh, the rules even harsher. Everything is balanced on scales which could sway either way.

‘My fears had no boundaries. Fears with shape and weight were the demons of a sound mind.’

Putting into words how much I adored this book was really difficult. After revising my review, I still felt I hadn’t done it justice; that that key element was somehow missing. No less…my feelings. So here goes. Although this series became my spring/summer reading obsession, Over The Edge wowed the pants off me. My husband even asked me why I was talking to myself and I had no trouble explaining why. Reiss’ doesn’t just write a book, she puts her heart and soul into it. Her phrases are prose in motion, purposeful poetry only she can pull off to a tee, leaving this reader in awe of her penmanship.

‘All I could do was give her the one thing she needed, the only thing I had. Me. My time. My body. My love.’

As you may have noticed, at no point have I mentioned the ending. Not one to let on, what I can guarantee is it will bring out all the feels and emotions you never thought you had in you. My biggest wish is you’ll give the entire series a chance. I also have to add that I’m not into dark genre but this book isn’t dark, it is splendid! Erotica at its best, gripping, antsy…gosh, I’m running out of adjectives! You’ll find you won’t be able to turn the pages quick enough to keep up with Caden and Greyson’s love story, and I sincerely hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did. Do I love these two people made for each other more than I already had? Gosh, yes! Bravo Reiss, simply bravo!

About CD Reiss

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

IF WE LEAP by Nina Lane is LIVE!

We’ve got a little gem of a read here! Nina Lane’s prequel to the What If Duet, IF WE LEAP is LIVE!

Cole Danforth was a troubled kid with a bad reputation. When I was nine years old, he rescued me from bullies trying to steal my Halloween candy. Thus began my decade-long crush on him.

Now, the summer after my freshman year in college, I discover the boy has turned into a gorgeous man who makes me melt. Every part of me wants him — my heart, my mind, my body. But Cole, struggling with the burden of his past, refuses to accept how good we are together.

I believe in us hard enough to take the chance. But will Cole take the leap of faith with me?

This novella prequel takes place ten years before If We Fall. The reading order of the WHAT IF series is:

Lane has laid down a solid foundation for her all-new What If Duet with this delightful prequel. Fans of young adult romance, you are going to love it! Nonetheless, this novella does transpire well before If We Fall coming soon. Wherever you happen to be; on the beach, taking a break at work or in need of a little distraction, I couldn’t recommend one-clicking this freebie more. Overflowing with swoon-worthy romance, you’ll get the chance to meet Josie Mays and Cole Danforth. And their story certainly proves that opposites do attract because gosh, their chemistry simply pulses off the pages. The cover depicts them perfectly and the title, If We Leap is truly is a leap of faith for both of them.

“I’d never think of you as a fling.”

“Then how about a leap?”

“Oh, you’re a leap all right, Josie Mays. For me, a quantum leap forward.”

Josie impressed me. Arty, innocent, wonderfully weird and loving, she hasn’t got a care in the world. Coming from a loving family, she has a fabulous rapport with her older sister and mother who are always there to give sound advice. Saying that Josie’s a bit of a scaredy-cat, but has good reason to pluck up her courage and do something about it. True to her written words, Lane’s gone all out with Josie and Cole’s characters and I just couldn’t help falling for these two lovebirds. I really liked that they’d known each other for years, and even though they hadn’t had the chance to become true friends for reasons to be divulged, Josie’s persuasive ways make Cole realize that taking the next step was possible.

“You were like this little woodland elf I saw every now and then. You always seemed happy, you know?”

Cole’s been Josie’s crush since what seemed like forever. Lane’s masterfully developed flashbacks take the narrative back in time, giving me a vivid picture of how they met and what Cole had had to go through. For a short story, I thought his past unravelled at just the right pace. It didn’t feel in the slightest bit rushed or too slow. He’d never shared his horrendous experiences with anyone. Nonetheless, he trusts Josie and opens up to her. Shocking. Just. Damn Shocking. I got really teary-eyed whilst reading how he’d suffered at the hands of someone who should have loved and supported him. And it gets worse!

“Whether we fly or fall,” I said, “don’t let go.”

“I won’t.”

Fab quirky banter flows nonstop and the dual point of view gave me the opportunity to delve into the protagonists’ thoughts. Just the right amount of angst kept me on my toes but didn’t overwhelm and what else can I say except this author never ceases to amaze me. I cannot wait for If We Fall, book one releasing 30th August. Thank you, Nina, for offering your readers this little gem of a read. Bravo!

The Left Side Of Perfect – Release Day – August 30

For better or for worse,’til death do us part . .

The better captured me; she’s who stole my heart.

And made me realize I couldn’t live without this woman.

The worse of her took my breath away–kicked me when I was down and twisted me into a million knots.

When I first met her, I thought she was someone I would never see again.

The second time I ran into her, it was a random coincidence.

The third?

I didn’t know it at the time, but she was the girl I was going to marry.

But life isn’t always perfect. You have to take the better and the worse–even if it means giving her up, having her slip between your fingers, and letting her walk away.

I’m getting married.

This is forever, ’til death do us part.

The Right Side Of Forever – Release Day August 31

In sickness and in health, to love and to cherish . . .

It sounds so simple, to love someone unconditionally.

To give them your heart.

So why is she slowly eating away at my soul with every unanswered phone call, every unread text, and every door left unopened?

She said yes, and yet, in order for her to be with me . . . I need to let her go.

Her hands rest on her hips, the navy-blue Grecian-style dress draped down the length of her body, a small slit on the side that barely reaches her knee. “You’re really fixated on this, aren’t you?”“Nah, didn’t care too much. A homemade dinner would have been nice, though.”“I can’t cook.”

“Neither can I,” I answer honestly. I either eat out, or I make myself scrambled eggs, and that’s about it. Rory taught me how to make meatballs once but hell if I can remember how to do that. All I know is that I enjoyed crushing the beef between my fingers. I get by with limited knowledge in the kitchen.

She chuckles. “Well, aren’t we a pair?” She turns to watch Stryder and Rory together. Apparently not giving a shit about the even bigger elephant in the room, Ryan asks, “Is this weird for you?”

“I have a flask in my jacket pocket, so you tell me.”

She lifts her bouquet and pulls out a mini bottle of alcohol. She wiggles her eyebrows at me. “Thought maybe we’d both need this since we have to sit through having all these pictures taken with them.”

“Smirnoff? That’s what you brought with you?”

“It was all I had. Don’t judge me.”

“I’m judging.”

Playfully she whacks my arm. “You shouldn’t be judging me. It was innovative. I carved out a little space in my bouquet for this bottle. If anything, you should congratulate me on this genius idea.”

“Was it your idea?”

“I mean”—she toes the ground—“I might have seen the idea on Pinterest along with a recipe for beer cookies that tasted like vomit.”

“Beer cookies?” I shake my head and take the little bottle from her. Twist the cap, tilt the bottle back, and swig. I hand it back to her, leaving half the bottle. “Even I know better than to think beer cookies would taste good.”

“They were for a boyfriend I was trying to impress.”

“Impress or poison?”

“Impress.” She laughs. “Although after our breakup, I should probably say poison. Teach all future suitors: if you mess with me, you get poisoned.”

“It’d keep me away, that’s for damn sure.”

She finishes the rest of the little bottle and returns it to her bouquet. She pats it and says, “I can recycle it later.”

“Get drunk and save the earth. Sounds like a good combination to me.”

“Ryan and Colby, can we get you over here for a few pictures?” the photographer calls out.

“That’s our cue.” Ryan pokes my cheek with her index finger, looking sincerely at me. “Don’t forget to smile, because these pictures will last forever.”

“Scowling not in the job description of best man?”

As we walk over, she says, “I would normally say no, but given the bride is your ex-girlfriend, one scowl is allowed.”

“One scowl? Damn, better make it a good one.”
