From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel.

Growing up, the three of us were friends.
He was the nerd.
I was the playboy.
She was the beauty.

Deep down, I only ever wanted her. I kept it inside because Rory and I made a pact that our friend, Amber, was off-limits.

He lied.

I went off to college, and he got the girl.
Amber never knew how I felt.
They were together for years—before he broke her heart.

Through it all and across the miles, she and I casually stayed in touch.
When my job sent me to Boston for a three-month contract position, Amber let me stay in her spare room.

Still reeling from her breakup, she’d sworn off men.
One night, I opened her computer to find the shock of my life. She’d hesitantly contacted a male escort company. Afraid to date and get her heart broken again, she was looking for sex with no strings.
Every emotion imaginable ran through me: protectiveness, jealousy—curiosity.
Amber had chosen Gentleman Number Nine and sent him a message.
She opened up to him, confessing, among other things, her physical attraction to her friend—me. But she considered me off-limits—and she thought I was a manwhore. (Ironic, considering the circumstances.)

Eventually, she set up a date to meet Gentleman Nine at a hotel.
When she showed up several nights later to meet him, she was stunned to see me standing there—with an offer I hoped she wouldn’t refuse.

This is a story about Amber Walton who is a Teaching Assistant who happens to be nursing a broken heart. Amber is a very loving and giving individual and much stronger than she thinks. She loves with all her heart and as her story unfolded, I couldn’t help feeling sorry for the selflessness of her character. All her decisions seemed to be based on others. I was hoping she would make the right choices for her to be happy again. Amber is an easy character to warm to, especially when she opens her home up for one of her good friends she has known for many years.

Channing Lord, hot guy that has been friends with Amber since they were kids. Hard working guy who has carried a reputation of being a bit of a Lothario. He could get any girl he wanted; however, I did wonder if there was one he really wanted but out of reach. The man could cook, was very protective over the people he cared about and seemed to be a bit of a misunderstood character, but that’s probably because he hid a lot of his feelings and situations his life was facing. I liked him a lot. He was funny and caring but didn’t seem to have a cocky side to him like most guys you read about that have hooked up with a fair number of girls.

Ward had me chomping at the bit while reading Gentleman Nine because right from page one, I was intrigued to learn what these characters were about. The writing is cleverly put together, making you think it’s going in one direction only to be thrusted into twist and turns. It’s a real rollercoaster of emotions mixed with some sensual heat.

The side characters are a great addition, particularly Annabelle who is a friend and colleague of Amber’s and her advice and friendship are amusing as well as endearing. The connection all the characters and the protagonists had was a real page turner to find out where their story would lead.
Full of love, angst and jealousy and secret crushes had me at times wanting to bang a few heads together. Nonetheless, with the beautiful flow of the writing, I placed my trust in the author to organise and make it right for Amber and Channing. There is such longing and torment for them, but mixed with laughter and banter. This is told in a dual point of view which is always a firm favourite of mine, most definitely for Gentleman nine since I needed to know what each of them were thinking.

To sum up, if you like a nice romantic friends to lover reads, this book is it albeit get prepared for a twist to throw you off the beaten track. I thoroughly enjoyed it to the point I couldn’t wait to pick up my Kindle again just thinking about the characters. Bravo to the author for not only putting together a book that makes you think, but one that leaves you thinking about the outcome long after reading the end.

Synopsis:

Lipstick kisses and caviar dreams don’t have a place in my life or his.

~ Max (Rebecca Robbins)

I’m a bad ass bitch. It’s a truth of mine. I live it and breathe that shit. No, I’m not conceited or full of myself. It’s just something I’ve discovered over the years.

I’m damn good by myself, always have been, always will. What I didn’t know is I can be improved upon.

Enter the equally bad ass and hella charismatic Deckard Camden. Who, the hell, told him to be this jaw-droppingly gorgeous, mountain of a man, in comparison to my little self, projecting a wall of defense that rivals my own?

Nobody prepared me for the sensual words that would fall from his lips or the massive … peace he would bring to my life.

Damn sure didn’t get me ready to be Deckard Camden’s wife … wait what?

Excerpt:

I’m a bad ass bitch! This isn’t one of those moments where I’m encouraging myself or attempting to infuse my soul with courage. The statement is fact. There’s no question about it. Most know me as Max. They wanted me to have a masculine name because I tend to steer clear of the frilly and pretty.

I’m a tattoo artist who doesn’t allow bullshitters in her shop. You’re fucked if you come around just to take in the eye candy. If you’re occupying space then you’re a fucking customer. Otherwise get the hell out of my shop. Inked to the Max isn’t a coffee shop, library, or any of those other cop-a-squat places.

I am a boss bad ass. It is who I am and what I exude. Living in Atlanta, Georgia. No, that’s a lie. I work in Atlanta. I live in Mableton. Parents live in Brookhaven. Grew up within the city limits and moved on to “greener pastures.”

When the shop was doing well enough for me to snub my parents, I got out of the house as quickly as possible. Their expectation was for me to do something with my nursing degree. I chose to use a different type of needle to become painfully employed. I could always fall back on the degree if times get hard with the shop. Not likely because I enjoy tattooing and piercing a little more than the average artist.

Yes, it is my bread and butter but taking an idea or thought and making it art is a magical thing. Taking that art and putting it on skin makes my nipples hard, I get so excited. Every tear of joy shed because the ink is something more than the “canvas” or client expected pretty much gets me off, since no one else is right now. I may need to rectify that crap soon.
