‘A shocking murder.

A suspicious son.

A dedicated detective.’

Arabella and Benton meet in the unluckiest of ways, over a dead body. Both in the beginning of this book see only the differences in each other.  A match and gasoline, and the result is always going to be combustible.

The main focus of The Elder is the murder mystery and the huge ramifications the murder has.  Arabella and Benton are forced to work together and as any great author can do, the relationship between these two characters moves forward slowly but surely and although important to the story; is not the main focus of this book. The author spins a story so well-developed and multi-faceted that even for a keen eyed reader such as myself, begrudgingly, I must admit I missed or misread the red herrings this author wove smoothly into the plot. Not a single plot hole was visible. Neither Arabella nor Benton is baggage free, which makes a lot of their interactions hyped up and emotional.

“You can’t just walk into my life and fit, just like I couldn’t do that to yours. We are pieces to entirely different puzzles.”

The Elder is based in a small American town and which brings the kind of hijinks and monkey business you would expect from a small town read. On the darker side of that very same coin this book also deals with the negatives of small towns and small minded people.  The Elder succinctly deals with socioeconomic differences and racial hatred in a way that doesn’t leave a bad taste in your mouth or the characters looking weak or feeble.

I wouldn’t much like to live in a small town but reading about them is far more enjoyable for me than reading a book set in a metropolitan town. Benton is the oldest of three children and his brother Porter is such a hoot, I really hope he gets his own book. It’ll be justice for some of the wise cracks he makes at his brothers expense. The Elder is the kind of mystery and suspense romance that I could really sink my teeth into and man, did I do just that!

Celia Aaron is a recovering attorney who loves romance and erotic fiction. Dark to light, angsty to funny, real to fantasy—if it’s hot and strikes her fancy, she writes it. Thanks for reading.
