Title: Unloved, a love story
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: 8th October, 2017
My name is Cassidy Porter…
My father, Paul Isaac Porter, was executed twenty years ago for the brutal murder of twelve innocent girls.
Though I was only eight-years-old at the time, I am aware – every day of my life – that I am his child, his only son.
To protect the world from the poison in my veins, I live a quiet life, off the grid, away from humanity.
I promised myself, and my mother, not to infect innocent lives with the darkness that swirls within me, waiting to make itself known.
It’s a promise I would have kept…if Brynn Cadogan hadn’t stumbled into my life.
Now I exist between heaven and hell: falling for a woman who wants to love me, while all along reminding myself that I must remain…
**NOTE: This book is intended for readers 18+**

Unloved’s cover is a thing of beauty with a shadow of tragedy. A white background with what looks like blood splatter surrounds a bleeding heart and this to me tells any reader exactly what this book is all about. One broken heart and one broken soul. Boundaries and comfort levels are tested and the truth isn’t all that it appears to be. Cassidy Porter lives in the dark alone because of his father’s sins, raised to believe that he must pay for those sins by living a certain way.
‘There are no guarantees. Only a monster would gamble someone else’s life when the possibility of a tragic outcome is so much higher than average.’
Brynn Cadogan couldn’t allow herself to move on from the pain and anguish of her past. Until one day she decides she must travel in order to say goodbye and move on.
The author is well gifted in weaving a story. Leading the reader down the winding path to the conclusion, throwing spanners in the works whenever and wherever she feels they are needed. Turning the entire reader’s belief system upside down and thrusting the true reality out there for all to see. Katy has this gift in her writing where the characters come across as real people. Real people suffering through some of the darkest days of their lives. In Unloved, she has managed to pull off what I thought was impossible; make her characters so real I couldn’t discern the difference.
Cassidy is a man living underneath a cloud so dark it appears to be almost lifelike, writhing and slivering through the darkness. Every time I heard him talk about himself, my heart would bleed. Everybody he had ever known had in one form or another, moulded and pushed him into becoming the man he was. A man who had had to develop such heart breaking habits just so that he didn’t really feel alone. Annie always comes to mind when I think about his habits. Cassidy is a man who feels so little about himself, and yet he shows such compassion to any other life form. It came across to me that at times he just wished he was invisible. His absolute aversion to having a relationship or forbid the forbidden, kids are so extreme. It’s his red button, the one thing that brings out the blind panic.
Brynn is a woman who for a long time was in pain and hurting. Unable to let go of the past and move on, that is until she is rescued by Cassidy. She trusts him almost immediately and allows him to care for her at her most vulnerable. Brynn’s curiosity is one of the things about Unloved that intrigued me. He’s your typical person, never accepting anything at face value and always asking questions, much to Cassidy’s resistance.
‘I am so in love with him, but we were also friends.
I wish he had trusted me.
I wish he had known that he could trust me, because I saw the colours of his heart and I loved them all.’
This author always creates characters that are relatable. Even Brynn’s parents were people I would do anything to be able to share a cup of coffee with. Any relationship takes growth and building blocks from the foundation up. One thing this author never fails to do is to make the build-up believable and highly anticipated. I love the back and forth and the will they, won’t they. It never fails to make my heart beat faster and to cause me to bite my fingernails in frustration.
‘I love her.
I will love her until the sky falls.
Until the sun and the moon fail to rise.
Until Katahdin crumbles.
I will love her forever.’
There are so many things I could say about Unloved, but all of them come to mind as spoilers. I’m still moved by the last ten percent. Even now, and I finished it yesterday, I just can’t seem to shake this book off. The author is one of a small group of authors I automatically one-click without even reading the blurb. Unloved was a book that dipped its toe into several genres and was done marvellously. Unloved is the best book I have read this year and if I could, I’d be awarding this amazing book 6 stars! Well done Ms Regnery! In my humble opinion, this is your best book to date and you hit this one out of the ball park.
‘Now I exist between heaven and hell: falling for a woman who wants to love me, while all along reminding myself that I must remain…unloved.’
