King of Code by CD Reiss
Publication Date: September 18th, 2017
Genre: Contemporary Romance

From New York Times Bestselling author, CD Reiss, comes a sexy tale of secrets, intrigue, betrayal, and a love worth crossing a continent for.

Taylor Harden is a man on the edge.

The edge of fame. The edge of untold wealth.

The edge of utter humiliation.

He built an unhackable system, and in front of everyone, it’s hacked.

His reputation goes from king to goat in a split second. Boom. Like that.

Some dude in Barrington, USA (AKA Nowhere) has locked down Taylor’s code, and if he doesn’t get it back, he’s going to be wearing a monkey suit for the rest of his life.

Except, this guy? This hacker from Nowhere? He’s not a guy.

Harper Watson’s all woman. And she has a plan for Taylor, his code, and his body.

Excerpt:

“About time!” the older lady shouted.

“Is Harper back?” I asked, handing the bags to the blushing redhead.

As if summoned, Harper came through the swinging door, keeping it open so everyone could get past. She looked at me through the screen.

“You coming in?” she asked.

“We need to talk.”

“Did the decryption key work?”

The door slapped closed behind her as she came out, and we were alone. The way the setting sun hit her cheeks made her glow, and the strands of gold hair at the edges looked translucent. She belonged on a postcard.

I kept forgetting she was holding me hostage. I kept forgetting I needed to think strategically. I had more at stake with this girl than I’d ever had with another.

“Did you doubt it would work?”

“Not really. I’m just making conversation.”

“What are the thorns about?” I pointed at the thorn bed that had eaten my phone and went down the stairs to the yard.

She came after me. “Don’t you have these where you’re from?” She snapped a dry twig off the end.

“Roses? Yes. Impenetrable, groomed thorn bushes in our yards? No.”

“It’s not normal to give the gardeners in town something to do?” We walked around the perimeter.

“You are not normal.”

“It still blooms in spring. It’s really nice. You should see it.”

We were at the back end of the yard, where the very top of the factory’s roof cut the horizon.

I took her hand, pulling her to a stop. “Harper.”

“Taylor?” Her hair flew in her mouth when she turned, and she drew her finger across her cheek to get it out.

What was I supposed to tell her again? That I knew we’d interviewed her. That I didn’t give her the job despite her having a leg up on everyone else we saw.

But was I contrite? Accusatory? Was I just going to relay information? What did I want out of her after I told her I knew?

“Thank you for helping today,” she said. “If you’d asked me when we met, ‘Would Taylor Harden help clean the factory?’ I would have said, ‘No, not for any reason.’ But there you were. Pushing a broom. Scooping up shit. Not being an asshole.”

“My watch was at stake.”

“Yeah. Whatever. You can say what you want to keep your reputation as a shithead intact.”

“I have a reputation as a shithead?”

“You know you do.”

I did know it, and I reveled in it.

She faced me and put her other hand out. I took it, holding both hands between us. I couldn’t help it.

“Well, you guys are such a bunch of sad sacks I had to help. And let me tell you, every guy in Barrington has a little asshole in him. Trust me. I’ve played pool with them.”

“I want to say…” She stopped herself as if she really didn’t want to say. “Let’s get together tonight and get you another decryption code. But… saying this is stupid.” She bit her lip.

“Say it anyway.”

“The sooner you get four codes, the sooner you leave.”

I looked at our hands so I wouldn’t have to look at her.

“I’m not sure if I want that,” she said.

I compare Reiss’ writing with chocolate. Once the first nibble’s been savoured, devouring it in one go is a foregone conclusion. In King of Code, there isn’t much difference in the respect that she pulled this reader in fast and furiously making me want more. In contrast, she’s in no hurry to conclude. Her little teasers and details of interest whetted my appetite for what was to come. Of course, the story didn’t pan out as I would have expected it to, so finding out how her protagonists tale of deception would close was foremost on my mind. And I have to add that I was dreadfully spoilt with two endings! For me, this book was like jumping on a rollercoaster of emotions criss-crossed with facts. Fictitious or not, they’re thrown from all angles, making me wonder if she can actually decode. I thought I was a dab hand at being able to read an html doc but boy, am I right out of my depth or what! Therefore the title couldn’t be more apt since decoding or better said, hacking a system, is exactly what the cornerstone of this love story with a twist and a half is all about. In this era of technology, what occurs is perfectly feasible and although the geek-speak used might be a tad difficult to grasp, I drunk in every word. I’d even go so far as saying that if your men like this kind of thing, encourage them to read it!

“You hacked me, and you set this whole thing up so I’d fall in love with you. Right? Say it.”
“It’s not that simple.”

He is the KING. At the pinnacle of becoming the one and only person who is going to be able to crack it, what Taylor is about to achieve will be his to possess. A web of lies entwined in an unbreakable operating network brought home the vulnerability of not only the hacked but in this case, also the hacker. The stress caused by nail-biting scenarios didn’t give me time to come up for air; it’s a constant bombardment of feelings which had me on the edge at all times. Oh my, I hope this isn’t a spoiler because blinkin’ heck, Taylor’s personal gadgets drove me round the bend!

“I guess I can’t blame you. I’m a statistical outlier.”
“I love it when you talk dirty.”

I liked Taylor one hell of a lot and connected to him easily. Indubitably a nerd, he’s really your normal kind of guy who works hard, plays little and is considered to be the best in his field. For now, it goes undisputed. Will it be? I didn’t think he excelled in controlling the critical intricacies of which you will decide for yourselves. On the other hand, he relies heavily on his hand-picked team for the birth of a complex code to run without hitches. To my mind of thinking, he was a tad too trustworthy with the wrong people. His no women in the cage attitude was of no surprise seeing that the ratio of the female workforce in megatech companies is low. Yeah, I found this out by consulting Google and for that matter, the author’s vocabulary had me studying a hacker’s dictionary! Nonetheless, there is one lady who I adored, but she doesn’t count. Or does she? On the crux of his biggest breakthrough, everyone who works for Taylor; myself included, were left aghast when an unknown source opens up a beehive of malicious activity. Who has the capability to do as such remains to be seen. For sure, the answer is more complicated than the mere element of destruction!

“What do you want?”
“A lot.”

Even though it’s not Harper’s story to tell, for me, she owned it! She’s everything I look for in a heroine. A true fighter, exceptionally intelligent, I found her unwavering perseverance totally befitting with her persona. She has a soft side though. Her benevolence towards family and friends stands out throughout the read. A natural protector, she too is protected. The manner in which the author has highlighted the outcome of a certain social issue made me sit back and think about the gravity of it and how lives were affected. Seeing as Harper is how she is, it only seemed natural for her to take this grave matter into her own hands. A matter that has more means to an end than I could have ever imagined. Whether the operation carried out by a force to be reckoned with is effective enough to dethrone the king who has yet to be crowned is your question to ask. Not mine to answer.

“Women are not subtle. If they’re not one-hundred-percent crystal clear, it’s because they don’t know, not because they’re being elusive or enigmatic or call it what you will.”

Taking into consideration King of Code’s technical content, this novel might not be everyone’s cuppa. I, personally, found it intriguing, unputdownable and cursed any kind of interruption. I couldn’t wait to see how the king would go about convincing the woman who stole his heart and more besides, to be his queen…and in the most unlikely of places at that. Laughing to myself here; the name won’t be forgotten quickly. The author’s writing style is unquestionably versatile, her skill in contrasting character traits, sublime. This is Reiss; therefore there’s no need to mention the scorching hot scenes, is there? And the finale… fan-bloody-tastic! Bravo!

“What kind of attack were you thinking of doing?”
“I was going to just put something in the comments to taunt you.”

About the Author

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Hit the ground running, that’s what it felt like when I flipped onto the first page of this book. Action-packed right from the start and it never slows down. Wow, I am very impressed with these authors’ first foray into the MC genre.

Written from dual points of view, the main characters are Avery and Slade aka Frost both children of MC leaders. Avery is the eighteen-year old princess of the Fallen Cutters motorcycle club and Slade, late twenties, is the Sergeant-at-arms and son of the president of Lilith’s Army motorcycle club. When something happens to Avery and her friends, the fallout causes a repercussion on Avery and Slade’s lives. The good news is they found each other. The bad news is that when the pair got thrown together and forged a bond between them it also resulted in betrayal, mayhem and bloodshed. How will they survive?

Considering that MC stories are not exactly my favourite genre although there are a few that I liked I have now added this book to my list of top MC books in my library. I love that Slade is not your stereotypical biker character and Avery is not your usual biker princess either. She wants to be independent and free from the MC life. I have read previous books these two authors collaborated on and one thing I noticed is that they create unforgettable villains in their stories. In Taking Avery one of the bad guys is such a nasty piece of work that he makes me want to jump inside the book and go on full throttle badass biker mode on him.

This well written book is full of suspense, violence, chaos, seriously scorching sex scenes and a dash of romance. I cannot wait for the next one. Ker Dukey and D H Sidebottom, I think you’ve turned me into an MC fan. Bring it on, ladies!

Meet Author Ker Dukey

I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it be through lyrics or bedtime stories with my sisters. I wanted to be an actress growing up so I could live many roles but I learned early on that my mind was too active… I would want to change the script.I would watch films and think of ways they could have improved the story if they took another direction so I thought it best that I tell my own.

My mum would always have a book in her hand when I was young and passed on her love for reading, inspiring me to venture into writing my own. I tend to have a darker edge to my writing. Not all love stories are made of light, some are created in darkness but are just as powerful and worth telling.

When I’m not lost in the world of characters I love spending time with my family. I’m a mum and that comes first in my life but when I do get down time I love attending music concerts or reading events with my younger sister.

You can find me on Facebook where I love interacting with my readers.

Struggling waitress Sugar Laine agrees to spend one night with Lyle—but only because she’s desperate to save her family home. She never expects that a night of passion will turn into a pretend engagement … or that the heat between them will blossom into love.

I have yet to read a J Kenner book that I didn’t enjoy, Wicked Dirty is no exception. I love this author, I make it no secret. The author has a style that I get lost in and she always seems to write in such a way that I get immersed so fully in the story that I often struggle to come up for air. If I have a J Kenner book in my hands…don’t talk to me, you’re not likely to get a response.

Another addition to the Stark books, featuring different characters. I love the way these tales are woven, they do feature Damien and Nikki and some others but they are never the main focus of the story so you don’t feel like you’re covering old ground. This one focuses on the super private, up and coming actor, Lyle Tarpin, and down on her luck, Sugar Laine. Yes, you read that right – Miss Sugar Laine. You need to ignore she’s called Sugar, the author gives you enough quips throughout the book. I must warn you before we go any further. You WILL fall in love with Lyle Tarpin. He is one of the nicest, sweetest, messed up guys I’ve had the pleasure of reading in a long while. While I love a dirty talking alpha, I like the kind of guy Lyle is far better. I feel his type have more sincerity within their character. And Sugar? Well, this woman will crawl under your skin in a good way too. Fiercely independent, a no-nonsense kind of woman that compliments Lyle Tarpin completely. She sees what he tries to hide, she reads him inside out with very little effort. She’s such an old soul.

I think the storyline is probably a little cliched – the poor waitress and the rich actor – been done before, right? Yeah, it has. But this one has the J Kenner spin on it and you’d be forgiven for thinking you were reading something new. The story flows beautifully, there’s no over saturation of sex (despite what that title is telling you), in my opinion, the steam is proportional to the plot which makes this engrossing. No skipped parts, no yawns, no – hang on, I need a cup of tea. No, you can easily read this from beginning to end and forget about anything else. Don’t start reading this at teatime or midnight, you’ll kick yourself if you have to put it down, and I don’t want your kids or hubby starving!

I’m not spoiling for you, so I can’t really write anymore, you just have to take my word for it when I say Wicked Dirty is a must read. Another fantastic addition for the fan in me.

EXCERPT

My blood pounds through my body, my heart beating so hard that I can feel the pressure not only against my ribs, but against the wall behind me. My lips are parted, my breath coming in shaky gasps.

He’s only inches away, so close I could reach out and touch that famous, gorgeous face. His eyes, as deep and blue as the summer sky, roam over me. He eases closer, moving slowly, his face reflecting a hunger that sends shivers through me.

Once again, my mind conjures the image of a hungry wolf. Only now I’m thinking that maybe getting eaten wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Besides, I’m here. Might as well enjoy it.

Then, of course, I remember exactly what it is.

Oh, God.

His fingertip brushes my forehead, and I almost jump out of my skin. I meet his eyes, see something that looks like irritation, and want to kick myself. I need to focus, dammit.

“You were somewhere else.” He speaks flatly, as if he’s working to keep all emotion out.

I shake my head, conjuring a lie. “I’m right here.” And then, because I’ve seen movies with call girls, I put my hand flat on his chest, trying to seem seductive. He’s wearing a gray T-shirt, and I can feel his heart beating beneath the planes of his muscled chest.

I read somewhere that he was getting in shape to play a superhero in an upcoming movie. And kudos to whoever’s orchestrating that transformation, because this guy is rock solid.

He’s still looking at me, and I fist my hand in the material of his shirt, needing an anchor against the storm of emotion I see playing out on his face. Desire. Hunger. Longing. Regret.

And pain. I see so much damn pain that I have to fight the urge to cup my palm against his cheek and tell him that whatever it is, it’s going to be okay.

Instead, I simply whisper, “Lyle?”

I’m not sure if it was the wrong thing or the right thing to say, but I know that it was unexpected. And before I can apologize or cover or say anything else at all, he is on me. One hand at my throat, the other hard on my breast. I’m pinned against the wall, helpless, as he claims my mouth again. Wildly. Brutally.

I try to think what I’m supposed to do—try to respond. But I’m trapped. I’m not Sugar. I’m not Laine. I’m not anyone. This isn’t about sex. It’s about pain and need and that storm of horrors I saw on his face. I might as well not even be here. And as his hand squeezes tight on my breast—as his mouth clashes so hard against mine that he draws blood—my only thought is that I shouldn’t have come at all. That this was stupid. Foolish. And that this night is going to leave me scarred.

I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to be what he wants. A warm body. An anonymous female.

But I can’t do it. I can’t do it at all.

All I can be is me. A woman desperate enough to have sex for money. A girl trying anything and everything to save her house. To protect her family’s memory.

I can be that girl.

But I can’t be nothing. I can’t be no one.

And as his hand tightens in my hair—as he kisses me violently—as his body presses hard against mine and I feel the steel of his erection—I know that I’ve made a terrible, horrible, awful mistake.

Stop!

ONE NIGHT by K.L. Kreig was reviewed by Tracey Lou Parker on behalf of Kindle Friends Forever

K.L. Kreig was a new author to me and I can honestly say I really did enjoy this read.

Saine Campbell was a beautiful, fiery, curvaceous  young woman who had been left devastated after her boyfriend had dumped her for a member of her own  family. Feeling lonely and desolate she heads to the nearest bar to drown her sorrows. This is where she will meet the mystery man who would tease her, tantalise her and give her the best one night of her life.

Move forward four years and saine has moved on with her life and is singing in a club that is part owned by her brother. Unbeknownst to her, the third partner is someone she is well and truly acquainted with if only in the physical sense.

Bennett Montgomery didn’t realise that one night would change his life forever. Drowning his sorrows at the nearest bar he found solace in the arms of a beautiful woman who he has never been able to forget. The feel and taste of her has haunted him for the last four years. So without giving too much away, lets just say that fate has a way of bringing two people together that were just meant to be.

This story was hot and explosive and I connected with both characters. The story flowed well but my only moan was, that it wasn’t longer because i enjoyed it so much. Congratulations K.L.Kreig i look forward to reading more of your work.

The following never before seen romances were written exclusively for this collection:

4.5 Stars ~ Reviewed by Klaire Sutherland on behalf of KFF

A collection of 7 novellas, from some of our favourite authors, that will leave you gagging for more. I read this in two halves, I’m not typically a novella reader, especially one after the other so I felt I needed a break in between. It was very easy to return to as essentially, I was starting a new novella by a different author. The variety of story and author meant Drawn to Him never got boring, all novellas were engaging for the most part. Drawn to Him is worth the read. I’m going to give a quick couple of sentences for each one.

Infatuation by Willow Winters –

As much as I enjoyed Infatuation, I felt it was perhaps not the right story to start with. For me, I wasn’t as engaged with the characters as others. I felt it was a little obvious in places and had scope for so much more. It’s a novella, so I get that parts will be a little lacking. It appeared to be a bit full on too quick, however there is a reasoning for it which comes later. Soft-ish alpha male appealed to me very much, as did the descriptive setting. I think that was my favourite, reading about the wilds of Alaska. I felt like I was in the scene a time or two – and that is just magic! 3 ½ stars.

The Billionaire’s Beginning by M. Never –

This author gives us a pushy alpha, a dirty man for sure. This was a far more sexually orientated story than the previous one and delved a little into PTSD (from the female character). I liked this but I think the overly sexual tone spoilt it a little for me. 3 ½ stars.

Doctor Dreamy by LJ Shen –

This one I loved, no surprise though, right? Quirky and snarky and I felt like I was getting to see another side to this author. Doctor Dreamy aka Rhys Matthews, pegs his female protagonist, Savannah, every single time. I loved his dry humour, his no nonsense approach and how the story unfolded. It read beautifully and honestly, didn’t feel like a novella. So sad when it finished. 5 stars.

Malfeasance by K Webster

Another one I loved featuring a strong, head together kind of guy. Judge Max Rowe doesn’t strike you as an immediate alpha, but boy it’s there and when he comes out to play, hold onto your knickers ladies. I think I liked the age of him and that Dorian seemed to not be your typical ‘airhead’ that often comes with characters of her age. The only thing that wrinkled my nose was the phrase ‘good little girl’ which was used, I found it sullied what they had a little, it’s a personal preference though. I would have liked a bit more of the other daughter’s perspective, apart from that – fab! 4 ½ stars.

Bad Cop by A Zavarelli –

I’ve always struggled with this author, having yet to read a full-length novel from her. Which is weird as she writes my favourite sub-genre in romance. However, Bad Cop tickled me. I wasn’t a fan of either main character but I did absolutely enjoy the story and it’s setting. I definitely felt the emotion from Ginger with this one. Writing was great too, I may have to return to this author and try again. 4 stars.

Date Night by Isabella Starling –

Initially I wasn’t liking this so much, again the sexual content seems to overshadow the story and I’m not a fan of that. It did pick up the more I read but for me, Date Night was my least favourite. I liked Cleo but didn’t love her, but I wasn’t so keen on Flynn. The secondary characters are written well, and contribute to the story sufficiently. 3 stars.

One Night by KL Kreig –

I haven’t read this author much, maybe one novel, and I was as captivated with this as I was with my other read. It’s the writing from KL Kreig that absolutely draws you in straight away. The story was compelling, the author giving you a wonderful cast of characters, particularly Bennett and Saine. Fab little storyline too. I think this is my favourite form them all. 5 stars

Excerpt from Infatuation by Willow Winters

“You’re very handsome, Mr. Kulls.”  I finally give in to a bit of my desire, and pick up the glass of wine, holding on to it for support in this decision.

His grin widens and he leans forward just slightly to say, “Alec, Lila.  My name is Alec to you.”  He pauses for a moment, then flashes me a smirk and adds, “Unless of course you’d like to scream ‘Mr. Kulls’ in bed?”

My face heats instantly as he rises from his seat to attend to the beeping oven and he’s quick to say, “I do believe Alec may be easier.”

The sweet wine touches my lips and the taste is delicious, but I can’t think of anything other than this man on top of me, making me scream as he thrusts inside of me repeatedly.

“I think you’ve maybe thought a little too far ahead, Mr.- Alec,” I’m quick to correct myself.  I watch as he works in the oven, turning the chicken breasts and then setting the tongs back down on the counter before coming back to his seat.

“Mmm, that could be,” he says picking up his glass, but not sitting.  I cross my ankles and turn in my seat to face him.

“This isn’t very professional,” I tell him with a serious look, or at least the most serious I can manage.  He shrugs his shoulders and then takes a sip from his glass.

“Do you want it to be?” he asks and then adds, “That’s fine if you do.  I understand the attraction may only be on my end.”

My heart thumps hard in my chest.  I don’t think this man knows how to be subtle.  He’s honest and to the point.  But I admire that.

“It’s definitely not just one-sided,” I admit, and then bite my tongue.  I’m thinking I should add that this is dangerous for me.  I could lose my job.  More than that though, this man could crush me.  I’ve never had a one-night stand because I know I don’t really do casual.  I’ve been wined and dined and then thrown away before.  It hurts too much.

I don’t recover easily, and I prefer to avoid relationships.  But it’s been so long since I’ve been touched.

Alec’s deep voice rumbles, “That’s good to know.”  I don’t think a man has ever looked at me with the same level of desire.  It’s tempting and frightening all the same.

“So, tomorrow?” he asks me, and my brow furrows with confusion.

“Tomorrow?” I repeat.

He smiles at me, and the smell of his cologne, or maybe his natural scent hits me with a powerful force that makes me lean in closer to him.

“Would you like to go out with me tomorrow?” he asks.

His gray eyes swirl with a mixture of desire and something else–a desperate need.  I nod my head slowly and say, “I’d love to.”
