In the darkness is where I first met him.
Alone at a water fountain, tears rolling down my cheeks.
Ready to give up.
From the shadows, his voice came to me.
Soothing. Comforting. Rough as the blackest night.
I didn’t see him.
I didn’t even know his name.
All I knew was he saved me that night.
He put my back on my feet.
And he kept me on them.
Every single time I needed him, he found a way to come to me.
My stranger of the night.
My dark warrior.
My name is Scarlett. You probably know me.
I’m America’s number one country music star.
I’m also the loneliest girl you’ll ever meet.
He’s as free as a bird. A nomad. Travelling alone.
Nobody to hold him back.
He holds the freedom I pray for every single day.
He shows me that life can be so much more than what I’m living.
When danger comes knocking, he’ll also show me a different world.
A world I never knew existed.
A world that both terrifies and fascinates me.
A world that goes against everything I’ve ever known.
A world of Iron Fury.

Bait a dark romance like no other that I have had the privilege of reading. Abigail and Leo are two very different people who following a series of questionable decisions, meet and begin a crazy kind of relationship. Both are broken in truly tragic ways. Both have felt loss of the worst kind. And, both are just surviving through the motions of everyday life, that is, until a chance encounter brings them together and helps to begin the process of healing. Importantly, I will state here that the way Abigail and Leo meet is very unorthodox.
If that were to happen in real life it would almost certainly end up with a restraining order or someone dead. Thank goodness books don’t always mirror real life. In this kind of scenario, real life would have sucked and I’m so glad this book went the way it did. Abigail is a woman who just wants to feel, I don’t even think by that point she cares what she feels, so long as it is something other than what she has been putting herself through. She sees herself as undeserving and just wanted to vanish from the world.
“Maybe a little darkness will turn us both back toward the light.”
Jade West goes where many authors fear to tread. She never at any point in Bait pulled her punches or softened what was going on between Abigail and Leo. It was raw, it was hard, it was pain, and it was misery. There are so many parts of this book I am dying to share, but to do that would be to ruin what is a truly phenomenal read. Bait is a book of sublime. It’s harsh, it’s raw and it’s destructive. But more importantly it is truly beautiful.
The question early on in Bait that I kept on asking myself was whether or not these two were meant to be each other’s redemption? Are they meant to help fix the broken of one another? Bait doesn’t use sex and love as a means to putting the broken pieces back in place, oh no. Bait uses these tools as a way to show that not only can you find what you are looking for, but over time and with effort the broken pieces can be removed and what is left can be sanded down and made smooth, not quite as shiny and new as the original design but nevertheless still as good, or even better than you were before.
“My monster is magnificent, hot as hell and as vicious as he’s ever been.”
‘His voice is liquid satin, dripping with nightmares and virgin tears.’
Jade has increasingly less to say about herself as time goes on, other than the fact she is an author, but she’s happy with this fact.
Living in imaginary realities and having a legitimate excuse for it is really all she’s ever wanted.
Jade is as dirty as you’d expect from her novels, and talking smut makes her smile.
She lives in the Herefordshire countryside with a couple of hounds and a guy who’s able to cope with her inherent weirdness.
She has a red living room, decorated with far more zebra print than most people could bear and fights a constant battle with her addiction to Coca-Cola.
