Blood, and love for a special little girl, bind the five Morrow sisters in an unbreakable way. Yet the family-devoted Sara Morrow yearns for more.

And that “more” looks a lot like the irresistible Jacob Ramírez.

For years, Sara’s contented herself with toe-curling fantasies about the CFO of the bank that employs her – all the while promising herself she’d never fall for the type of passion that destroyed her parent’s marriage. But when the one and only Latin six-foot-four god accepts her offer of help and turns her fantasies into reality, she’s forced to decide if it’s worth finding out if her boss is everything she’s dreamed of, or just the manifestation of all her fears.

Jacob has his own set of fears. Right out of high school, he joined the Marines, only to come home six years later with night terrors that haunt even his days. Now, at thirty-three, rudimentary techniques keep his secret hidden.

Until a chance meeting with Sara Morrow coincides with a deception that rocks him to his core.

When Sara’s faith is tested, her sisters’ love gives her the courage to believe in someone else. When Jacob’s is tested, he has to learn how to believe in himself.

If somebody were to ask me to sum up this book in one sentence, I would simply say this: “It’s a beautiful and exhilarating train wreck”.

I’ll be honest up front; I’ve never been keen on this kind of taboo . . . a student and teacher dynamic? Just never did it for me, and I am so happy Illicit was the book I chose as a taster.

Lynn and Carson’s story was thought provoking and tumultuous.  So many highs and lows, it kind of reminded me of a rollercoaster.

I was grabbed at the prologue, so full of promise and despair.  I was thrust into their story and just couldn’t get enough.

I’ve stopped wishing for extraordinary.  I’ve stopped wishing for that one moment so profound it will change everything.  I know it will never happen, so there’s no point in dreaming.

But like all things in life, extraordinary happens when you least expect it, and in the blink of an eye, everything can change.

Lynn meets Carson one evening on a secluded beach, running from her phenomenally deluded ex-boyfriend and his cheating ways.  Lynn flees from the party and seeks solitude by the waves, only she meets the devastatingly handsome Carson and they share a love of constellations.

“I guess it’s because it makes something beautiful from chaos.  Two points in the sky.  Two stars otherwise not connected.  Then an imaginary line connects them and everything makes sense”.

After a near perfect night with Carson, Lynn leaves believing she’ll never again set eyes on him again.  That is until she starts senior year at Cranbrook Prep, and walks into AP World History and her world stops. Carson Blake is her teacher.

This story has more lows then high and in parts I truly felt as if Lynn and Carson truly brought the worst out in each other.  But with the lows, highs are soon to follow; they fight with every fibre of their being to stay away from each other.  But it was just not meant to be.  They step on to the tilt-a-whirl of life and soon discover that everything comes with a price.

“The only sound I hear is breathing.

His breathing.

My breathing.”

Both Lynn and Carson are driven by an almost primal need to protect the other, doing almost anything to keep them safe. They make each other weak, but they also make each other strong.

I’m Artemis.  I’m strong.  I have gone to battle and lived through it.  Whatever happens, I will be okay.”

This story isn’t just about Lynn and Carson; it’s about family and it’s about realising what is truly important in life.  But most importantly, to me, Illicit is about taking all the broken parts of you and rebuilding them into something different, some better, but ultimately something stronger.
