This wasn’t how it was supposed to be….

They met at a wedding, Todd the only man wearing jeans, Jessica the beauty with a troubled background. Settled into married life after falling in love, they have so many things left to do in life. They think they have so much time… until Jessica and Todd’s average married life comes to a halt on a snowy back road. When their truck careens down an embankment, they find themselves in a life-or-death situation. With rescue seeming impossible, they cling to the only hope they have left: their love for each other.
As they fight for survival, their connection carries them through the biggest challenge of their lives. Memories and regrets swirl around the couple as they finally take a moment to reflect on what they’re doing in life.
There’s one big, icy question that haunts them, though: Is this where their story will end?

Review by Emma-Louise Lewis on behalf of KFF

“A Single moment can change everything – but can love help us survive?”

~ Five Stars ~

This question is asked on the front cover of Remember When.  This question not only leads the reader into one of the most emotionally raw books I have ever had the pleasure of reading; but also pulls the reader through a beautifully sweet series of memories that Jess & Todd re-live during their harrowing situation.

Todd & Jessica Kling find themselves in a situation of life or death…their life or death. A fluke accident catapults their truck down a hill and wedges it between two trees. Todd injures his leg, leaving most of the rescue efforts to Jess.

“You come on.  If you go out there, you’re going to mess your leg up even worse, so stop.  I’ve got this.  I’m tougher than you think.”

“I know”.

“You’re amazing”

Parts of Remember When were almost too hard to read. Each time Jess and Todd attempt to free themselves their hopes are dashed.

“Now she realised nothing was guaranteed.  Life could be going along at a humdrum pace, promising you forever.  And then a single moment could rip everything to shreds.  A single movement of your foot on the brake could obliterate everything you thought you had time to do.”

“The cold had finally seeped the entire way through to her core, to her heart.  It was black, not with fear but with the feeling of giving up.”

The love between Jess & Todd is a truly beautiful thing to see. Having been together for years and having been through so much together, their love is solid.  It made my heart smile.

“It was simple beautiful, the two of them together, no matter what happened.  She would die, whether it be today or in one hundred years, thinking they were beautiful together.”

“He needed to hand on, and if he couldn’t, she needed to clutch on to him with everything she had.  She could not let him go.  They were in this together, just like everything else.  Live or die, they were in it together.”

Todd isn’t a tall, dark, sexy man.  He’s an average man with a pot belly and a beautiful heart.  Through the authors descriptions of Todd Kling, I could see him in those jeans when he met Jess and how truly sexy his beard must have looked.  I loved Todd’s awful sense of humour and I adored the way he saw the world and the way he used his optimism and realism to bring Jess back from her darkest moments.  These two were so real to me, I just can’t describe how much they mean to me.

Reviewing Remember When hasn’t been an easy thing.  The story had so much heartache; I must have spent at least 15-20% of the book, with tears rolling down my cheeks.  This was an emotional roller coaster, and to be honest, I loved every minute of it!

A high school English teacher, an author, and a fan of anything pink and/or glittery, Lindsay’s the English teacher cliché; she love cats, reading, Shakespeare, and Poe.

She currently lives in her hometown with her husband, Chad (her junior high sweetheart); their cats, Arya, Amelia, Alice, and Bob; and their Mastiff, Henry.
Lindsay’s goal with her writing is to show the power of love and the beauty of life while also instilling a true sense of realism in her work. Some reviewers have noted that her books are not the “typical romance.” With her novels coming from a place of honesty, Lindsay examines the difficult questions, looks at the tough emotions, and paints the pictures that are sometimes difficult to look at. She wants her fiction to resonate with readers as realistic, poetic, and powerful. Lindsay wants women readers to be able to say, “I see myself in that novel.” She wants to speak to the modern woman’s experience while also bringing a twist of something new and exciting. Her aim is for readers to say, “That could happen,” or “I feel like the characters are real.” That’s how she knows she’s done her job.

Lindsay’s hope is that by becoming a published author, she can inspire some of her students and other aspiring writers to pursue their own passions. She wants them to see that any dream can be attained and publishing a novel isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Priscilla Story, the self-proclaimed “wild child” of the straight-laced Story clan, has always had a knack for getting herself trouble. Except this time, her “growing problem” is going to require a Daddy sooner than later…or she can kiss her inheritance good-bye.

Shane Olson, who previously dated Priscilla’s sister, Margaret, isn’t opposed to a marriage of convenience for the sake of furthering his business interests, but Priscilla – with her wild ways – is just about the last woman he’d choose to marry.

In order to make the marriage look convincing, they end up having to spend more time together than they’d originally planned. When rolling stone, Priscilla, who lives by the seat of her muu-muu, and seriously-ambitious Shane, who’s had his whole life planned since he was eleven, start falling for each other, it’s going to take a whole lot of compromise for this Bohemian and her Businessman to find their happily ever after.

REVIEW

Review by Emma-Louise Lewis on behalf of KFF

The Bohemian and the Businessman; a title that truly is the definition of just how many differences there are between Priscilla Story and Shane Olson.

“Wild child” Priscilla finds herself in a sticky situation.  Pregnant and single, facing losing her inheritance, if she doesn’t marry before her secret is exposed.

I’m not, she wanted to scream, fisting her hands by her sides and blinking back tears.  I’m not even close to okay.  I’m having a baby, and when our father finds out, he’ll disown me.  My allowance is almost gone.  I’ll have nowhere to go…

Hard working Shane, craves to be in the top tier of Story Imports…

“You can’t be a vice president here unless you’re family.”

“But Alice—“

“I’m not talking about the girls.  I need the right man for the job.”

“A son-in-law, I need a son-in-law who can start taking over the reins!”

Priscilla comes up with the idea that they should marry.  Solve her issue and Shane’s in one fell swoop.

Shane was a multifaceted character who broke my heart and rebuilt it so many times, I had this overwhelming desire to just tuck him in my pocket and keep him safe. Shane Olson is also a complex character, who on the surface comes across as arrogant and has no sense of humour.  Who Shane really is, is much more complicated and layered.  Honestly, somewhere in the midst of all the drama this book throws at the reader, I fell fast and hard for the inexperienced Shane Olson; his baby blue eyes especially.

The villain in this book is evident…Douglas Story the arrogant, sexist, vile father of Priscilla and her sisters. Douglas Story was like a bad smell you can’t clear from your nose. I have never, ever read a book where there was a character that was such a potential menace to me literally throwing my kindle across the room.

“…always wanted a boy.  A son.  Someone like you.

Instead I got them.  A mouthy rebel, a shrinking violet, an airhead, a hippie and a big baby.  Five girls.”

The beauty of the love between Priscilla and Shane is breath taking.

Maybe life is like this sometimes for some lucky people, he thought: After years and years of nothing special, someone miraculous walks into your life, and in the space of a few weeks, everything changes.  You get married.  You fall in love.  Quickly.  All at once.  Without any warning.  And the thing is, if you longed for it but never saw it coming, the depth of your gratitude leave you speechless, humbled you, changes you from the inside out.  Because in one perfect flash of grace, everything you ever wanted is suddenly yours, even though you doubted something this good would ever happen to you.

From the front cover to the last words, I was enthralled.  Carried away on a journey I was so sure was going to go blow up in their faces. Priscilla and Shane are committed and rock solid partners from a certain point early-ish in the book.  I loved how they leaned on each other and supported each other. This book was the true definition of unconditional love.

Review : The Perfect Illusion by Winter Renshaw

It’s only pretend…

And it’s only three months.

I’m in the midst of scrawling “I QUIT!” onto his fancy cardstock letterhead when my boss corners me. He needs a favor, he says. And then he asks how well I can act …

Hudson Rutherford needs a fiancée.

With his old-moneyed parents forcing him to marry some bratty hotel heiress and his hedonistic, playboy lifestyle at stake, the only way to get them to back off is to make them think he’s truly, madly, deeply in love … with me—his third personal assistant this year.

But I can hardly stand working for him as it is.

Hudson is crazy hot and well-aware. He’s arrogant, spoiled, and silver-spooned. He checks me out when he thinks I’m not looking, and his life is a revolving door of beautiful women. Plus, he can’t even pronounce my name correctly—how’s he going to convince his family he’s in love with me?!

I’m seconds from giving him a resounding “no” when he flashes his signature dimpled smirk and gives me a number that happens to contain a whole mess of zeroes …

On second thought, I think I can swallow my pride.

But, oh baby, there’s one thing I haven’t told him, one teensy-tiny thing that could make this just a hair complicated …

Here’s hoping this entire thing doesn’t explode in our faces.

~ Four Stars ~

You know, sometimes for whatever reason, one wants a fun, light-hearted read with just the right amount angst to keep the reader engaged in the story. Having never read any of Ms Renshaw’s works before, I was itching to get my hands on her new standalone novel. But much to my dismay, I couldn’t begin it as soon as I would have liked to because of health issues. It seems impossible that a book can lift your spirits up and make you feel better, doesn’t it? Well, The Perfect Illusion was exactly what the doctor ordered! I found the non-stop dialogue especially realistic when certain issues were being discussed between the protagonists. And if you’ve read any of my reviews, you’ll probably have noticed my narrative choice is alternative viewpoints in present, so I got off to an excellent start, too.

“Why me, though? I can’t stand you and you’re well aware.”

“That’s exactly why it has to be you.”

Maribel Collins impressed me. She had no qualms about standing up for herself regardless of the situation she’s in. She loathes her boss and I couldn’t blame her either. It’s funny how their decisions coincide on the same day, but she’s not prepared to put up with this obnoxious jerk a minute longer. However, when Hudson Rutherford tells her the reasons behind his secret proposal and why it’d be beneficial for both of them, playing her cards close to her chest, she accepts. He’s well aware that if anyone can pull it off, it is she. What he isn’t aware of is a hidden truth.

“Hell bent on convincing yourself you still hate me?”

“I don’t hate you, Hudson.”

“I know you don’t. But you wish you did,”

“You’re right.”

This revelation took me by surprise in chapter one. I even thought it could have been held back, but who was I to criticise so early on when I had no idea how Maribel and Hudson’s story was going to pan out! Not only did I wonder how long it would take him to find out and how he’d react to it, but in a scene a little over halfway, I felt as if the tables had been turned and I’d sussed it all out. I knew I shouldn’t have been grinning from ear to ear because unless I was way off the mark, my suspicions would most definitely put the cat among the pigeons! Thus far, my reading pace fitted in well with the book’s moderate pace, nonetheless, the last third flew by.

“Why can’t we get caught up in this? If it feels right, maybe it is right?”

“It’s not right ”

To sum up; although the plot isn’t overly suspenseful, it’s got a couple of cleverly construed twists in it, and I liked how the author softened Hudson’s high-and-mighty attitude. Hudson’s best mate intrigued me, albeit I thought his generosity was a tad out of character. Both Maribel and Hudson’s parents are really likable folk and of course, there has to be a baddie to liven up the story! Believe me, you’re going to hate her! And now for the bedroom scenes…explicitly described super-sexy-hotness, so make sure you’ve got a fan handy!  The ending! All I can say is I was left oohing and aahing! Bravo Ms Renshaw!

“If I didn’t believe in the possibility of something amazing, I wouldn’t be standing here, fighting for it. Fighting for us.”

“How noble of you.”

“What? What are you thinking?” I ask.
Her brows lift. “That this entire thing sounds insane. And that you’re insane.”
“Maybe it is. And maybe I am. But I know it could work.”
She turns to me, her eyes holding mine. “Why me, though? I can’t stand you and you’re well aware.”
“That’s exactly why it has to be you.”
“You can’t tell me that out of the assortment of women I’ve seen waltzing in and out of your life the last two months, not one of them would be jumping at the chance to help you with this.”
“You’re right. They would be. But then they’d want something more, and quite frankly, I have nothing more to give than my last name and a comfortable lifestyle,” I say, checking my wristwatch. “You, Mari … you wouldn’t want more from me, and that’s exactly why you’re the only one I trust.”
“I don’t know how I could convince anyone I’m in love with someone who gets under my skin the way you do, Hudson.”
“You said you could act.” I lift a brow.
“I … yeah … I guess? But can you?”
Stepping toward her, I take her by the wrist and guide her off the bar stool, pulling her body against mine, meeting her curious gaze with my own sultry version. Cupping her soft cheek in my right hand and letting my fingers graze the nape of her neck, I lift her mouth, holding mine inches from hers.
She breathes me in, her stare unblinking. My left hand circles her waist, feeling it cave with my touch.
“I’ve never told you this before … but the day I met you, I knew there was something special about you. And something tells me you’re about to become the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” I say, my words slow and gentle as our eyes lock. “I want to spend the rest of my life with you, until we’re old and gray. We might drive each other crazy, our path may be a bit bumpy at times, but we’re going to love every minute of it. Marry me, Maribel Collins. Be my wife. I don’t want anyone but you.”
Stillness lingers between us, and then she releases a shuddering breath before blinking. Peeling herself from me, she tucks her thick blonde hair behind her ears before resting her hands on her hips.
“That was …” Mari leaves her thought unfinished as she moves a few paces back. “That was … cheesy. But passable.” Her lips pull into a bitten grin as she recovers her composure. “You’re good at that.” Glancing up at me, her expression dissolves. “Not that I’m surprised. You’re a professional manipulator.”
Rolling my eyes, I exhale. “Do you want the money or not?”
Her hand rests on her stomach briefly, and then she continues pacing. She’s going to wear a beaten path into the wood floor by the time she’s finished.
“Five million dollars.” I fold my arms. “Final offer.”
Mari stops in her tracks, her gaze flicking to mine. “I don’t want to do this. I think it’s a bad idea. But you’re making it impossible for me to say no.”
My mouth curls at the sides. “I knew you’d see it my way.”

REVIEW

Reviewed by Anna on behalf of KFF

~ 4.5 Stars ~

This is my first read by author Violet Duke. This book is about Addison and Caine.

Book One – Before That Night

Addison and Caine’s story started when Addison was 20 years old and ended up taking care of her brother Tanner and sister, Kylie. Addison and her younger siblings have nowhere to go when their junkie mum left them for a guy she met. Not wanting to lose her siblings to foster care Addison was forced to get herself a job as a waitress in a diner and live in a van with the kids. This is where she met Caine, one of the cops who frequent Joe’s Diner where Addison works.
Caine is a police officer, he is 29 and much older than Addison. Caine comes from a very interesting family and the banter between the brothers quite funny. He is very alpha and protective of Addison. The growing attraction between Addison and Caine can no longer be denied and everything seems to be going smoothly until a frequent customer named David gave Addison weird vibes and her inner alarm bells start ringing. With a stalker putting a spanner on Addison and Caine’s developing relationship, she has to make a choice: fight or flight? This book ends in a cliff-hanger.

Book Two – Every Night Without You

The story picks up seven years after Addison and her younger siblings disappeared from Caine’s life. Addison is now a successful businesswoman. She managed to get a new identity and keep her whereabouts a secret from her past life. Her younger brother Tanner is away studying at university and Kylie is now a teenager. Despite their hard life one thing I admired about Addison is her resolute and firm belief in keeping her family together. She is tough, determined and yet still innocent in some ways and that makes her character admirable. She developed a tougher shell to the outside world to protect herself and her siblings.

Here in book two we read more of Caine’s family. His brothers and extended family’s camaraderie is fun to watch. There are more than a few funny moments between Drew, Gabe and Caine especially the dildo Taser thingy. Yep, if you want to know more about it you have to read this book!
We also get to meet Addison’s new friend Alec who helped her out with the housing programme and get her a new identity. The last half of this book will tell you how it all began with Alec. The hilarious banter made me giggle at times but at the back of my mind I still keep on thinking about that creepy stalker, David. This blight of a human being just won’t go away! You know that feeling when you think everything is hunky dory and yet you know the shoe is about to drop on the other foot? Yeah, that happens but no I’m not telling!

There is more “meat” to book two. It’s not all rainbows and unicorns and that is why I loved it that the author published both books together. I don’t hate cliff-hangers as long as I get to read the follow up right after book one ends. Reading from the author’s notes this duet is a spin off from her other series. Now that I have read Caine and Addison’s story and met Caine’s family I would definitely love to read the other books based on the other characters. I highly recommend this duet. 4.5 stars from me!

Release Blitz : The One That Got Away by Magan Vernon

Title: The One That Got Away
Series: Friendship, Texas #4
Author: Magan Vernon
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: April 24, 2017

Blurb

A brand new standalone from Friendship, Texas featuring everyone’s favorite awkward baker and the one that got away.I looked up and standing there was my ex-boyfriend, Jordan Webber. Maybe ex-boyfriend wasn’t the right word. Maybe the boy who I dated for almost two years. Then he graduated early, leaving for art school in New York. He wanted me to come with him, but what future did I have in New York? My parents weren’t paying for me to go to school unless it was a state school with a real degree and all I ever wanted was to do photography. So the portrait studio worked for the time being until I realized I really needed to get out of the house and took the part-time job at the bakery. Between my parents’ divorce, work, and trying to get over my break up, I was basically a hot mess the first two years after high school. Joey came in at the right time as a distraction then the job at the bakery. But I still never forgot about the one that got away.

I hadn’t seen Jordan in over four years and there he was, standing there with a hand on one of the boxes and his blue eyes wide open like he’d just seen a ghost.

“Abbey Dillinger?” he asked, it wasn’t so much of a question as it was a breathless statement.

I hated him for leaving me. He could have gone to art school in Dallas. He could have stayed if he really did love me. I should have hated him. But seeing him, standing in front of me, I couldn’t hate him. The past four years had been very good to him.

**This book is a standalone in a series of standalones taking place in the fictional town of Friendship, Texas. You don’t need to read any of the previous books to understand this one***

REVIEW

~ 3.5 Stars ~

This is book four of the Friendship, Texas series but I can say that it isn’t all that necessary to read the previous books. There are some relationships in here that were clearly covered in the other books, but Magan Vernon makes it easy, fills in the gaps and as such you don’t really miss their stories. Although, they do sound intriguing and you’ll probably end up wanting to go back and read them if you are new to this series or author. Magan is not a new author to me as I have read another book from her a while back now. I was confident that I liked her style and could read the author no problem. And I did.

Nice easy read, with a little angst thrown in for good measure. I was a little disappointed that it read very YA for me, thus some actions and words came across a little childish and immature. I particularly found Abbey off putting at times, quite naïve in her relationships and somewhat ‘snooty’ in places. Maybe this added to her character who knows. The age of the characters and how they acted certainly lent towards that YA vibe, but with some of the sauciness you might find in a NA read. I struggled to get a handle on Jordan if I’m being honest. At times I felt that he flip flopped through his emotions and wasn’t steadfast in his convictions where Abbey was concerned. It was always made clear that he wanted Abbey back but I didn’t quite feel that ‘urgency’ in him, like she was his be all and end all.

The thing which stuck out the most for me within this story was the secondary plot line that concerned the group of friends that Abbey found herself with. She makes a few attempts to justify their actions, one friend in particular, but again it felt half baked. It’s quite clear from early on that the semi-adult relationships she has are not all that good for her, and where she thinks she has friends she’s sadly mistaken. I was happy to see a good conclusion in terms of this plot line.

Coming back to the main story – I would have to say it was your run of the mill book. Nothing flashy, nothing spectacular and the title says it all. The prose is good but didn’t sweep me off my feet, I didn’t find those all defining, melt your heart moments that drew the emotion from me. The read is steady, solid and enjoyable. If I had to say that anything really stood out for me, it was the ending. I wasn’t quite expecting the turnaround with Jordan and his truth so that part I really did enjoy.

Kindle Friends Forever reviewer Klaire recommends this book – steady and dependable, easy read.

Author Bio

Magan
Vernon has been living off of reader tears since she wrote her first short
story in 2004. She now spends her time killing off fictional characters,
pretending to plot while she really just watches Netflix, and she tries to do this
all while her two young children run amok around her Texas ranch.
