From New York Times bestselling author Katy Regnery comes a new twist on a beloved fairytale.

In this modern retelling of The Little Mermaid, a fisherman’s daughter from an Outer Banks island untouched by time, meets the son of the North Carolina governor at a fancy party where she is working.

Laire, who wants more from life than her little island can offer, is swept away by wealthy, sophisticated Erik, who is, in turn, entranced by her naiveté and charm. The two spend a whirlwind summer together that ends on the knife-point of heartbreak and forces them to go their separate ways.

Years later, when fate finds them together once again, they will discover the terrifying depth of the secrets they kept from each other, and learn that shattered hearts can only be healed by a love that willfully refuses to die.

Starting this review was not an easy feat as I was simply left with my head in my hands! Few books have made me feel this way… but then again, Regnery’s writing is a force to be reckoned with. She pushes, pulls and arouses so many contrasting feelings in the reader that coming out unscathed is nigh on impossible! Narrated in past tense third person, she cannily gave me a sense of false security. I truly felt she’d snuggled me up in a quilt of warmth at the beginning of the story, and then… And then I was only to be showered with what seemed to be love’s cold deception. This is an extremely challenging read. The gradual build-up in the two protagonists’ story is told in such a way I hung on to every word and never wanted this fairytale based on The Little Mermaid to end.

When Erik Rexford and Laire Cornish’s relationship began to flower, the first thing that came to mind was how on earth were these two youngsters with such different backgrounds going to be able to have a future together. Between them, their tower of strength to ride a storm on disproportionate levels never appeared to waver. I yearned for them to conquer it. I wholly trusted a happy ever after. Ah, but that very ride they’d both willing chosen to take took me on a trip overflowing with conflicts intricately woven into the plot! Unravelling their conundrum seemed to be an impossibility, kept me on tenterhooks and at times, my own sufferance was unbearably difficult to deal with. Re: my hubby who heard me sobbing at ridiculous o’clock reminded me that day was breaking and woke me up to reality. Why then, was I in such an emotional mess? Why then, couldn’t I put this book down? I ached for Erik and Laire’s caresses, their stolen kisses and glimpses of adoration. I saw them through their eyes and lived their devotion. Thus said, when that ominous black cloud niggling me culminated, not only did it work well in the read, it destroyed me in the process. Yep, there’s a twist in their story which isn’t too difficult to fathom out; but nevertheless, it’s still heart-breaking.

“And what exactly are you thinkin’, darlin’?”
“How much I want to kiss you again.”

Erik’s dismayed his future has been mapped out for him, Laire’s sheltered upbringing doesn’t allow her any freedom. These two facts have indescribable consequences. Hence, her lack of worldly experience which couldn’t have been more becoming, and his indisputable social status are catastrophically thrown off course by… As much as I’d love to say by whom, I can’t. Rules are rules! Accepting and abiding by them wasn’t questionable; nonetheless, new ones were made. Me thinking they’d sorted everything out to the best of their abilities couldn’t have been further from the truth.

“Our rules, Laire.”
“Our rules, Erik.”

Laire’s innocence sold me from the first moment I met her. I love a heroine who has faith in herself and this gal didn’t let me down at all. Her ambition is for a better life; she’s very good at what she does, and believing in herself to carry out her dream, steadfast. She loves her family but knows there’s so much more to discover outside of her remote surroundings. She wants to fly, to live every experience life has to offer. And never could she have imagined her knight in shining armour would be so close to home but so far away.

“Because you have dreams for your life, and you want to make them come true first, before you settle down right?”
“Plans, more like. There are lots of plans for me.”
“That’s how I feel too!”

Erik is a storm. Erik is perfect. Erik is wise beyond his years and loves to such a degree, my very soul hurt. But when lies dominate secrets, he loses himself. He broke my heart into tiny little shards and not because of his own doing. (Have a man-sized handkerchief at hand ‘cause you’re going to need it!) In spite of Laire not having all the luxuries he had and being in a far worse position than him, her grief was far easier for me to bear.

“Because I’m not a goddamn idiot. Because those people ain’t our people. They don’t live their lives the same way we do, Laire. They got different values, different priorities. You know that. You can expect nothin’.

Apart from such a moving story, the pace has to be mentioned. It’s not too fast, not too slow and drew this reader in with such an ease that every nuance of a word was taken seriously. I really couldn’t get over how well the author managed to pull off the antiquated island brogue. It was so easily pronounced leaving me once again, in awe of the author’s magnificent writing skills. The secondary character development is unarguably good regardless of my feelings for them. Yes, the mere fact that Laire and Erik try to follow family values cause moral dilemmas and is constantly put into question. What more can I say except this second chance full-length novel is a must read! BRAVO Ms Regnery!
