For Vicente Bernal, truth is all he’s known. The son of an infamous drug lord, Vicente was born to help run the family business, which means he’s been raised on a throne of sordid pasts and dirty laundry, violence and pride. But when Vicente stumbles across someone he’s not supposed to know about – a woman from his father’s checkered past – he sets out to California to find her behind his father’s back.

What Vicente doesn’t expect to find in San Francisco is Violet McQueen, the woman’s twenty-year old daughter. Beautiful and edgy with a vulnerability he can’t resist, Violet tempts Vicente from afar and though he promised himself he’d stay away from her, curiosity and lust are powerful forces. Besides, Vicente has always gotten everything he wants – why shouldn’t he have Violet too?

Soon his wants turn into an obsession, one that sweeps Violet into his games as they fall madly, deeply in love with each other, the type of first love that can drive a person mad.

But it’s a love with tragic consequences.

Both the truth – and the lies – not only threaten to tear them apart, but threaten their very lives.

Someone has to pay for the sins of the fathers.

And they’ll be paying the price with their souls.

NOTE: Black Hearts is book one of the Sins Duet, with the sequel, Dirty Souls, releasing in March 2017.

These books can be read as a standalone – though they are a spinoff of the Sins & Needles and Dirty Angels trilogies, Black Hearts & Dirty Souls are set 20 years in the future and follow new characters. You do NOT need to read TAT or DA to enjoy or understand this duet.

Firstly, I have to mention the cover. Those eyes, that nonchalant look about him, the way he holds his cigarette between his lips. I’d write a review about the cover if that were ever possible! And then I met him. Whatever I happened to be doing, I couldn’t seem to shake off his image or persona since Vicente Bernal literally got under my skin. I wasn’t able to read the book in one sitting; nevertheless, it wasn’t for the want of trying. The author’s descriptive skills are quite incredible. This story is a tad darker than what she’s published thus far, and even though the intimate scenes are more sexually charged than usual, believe me. . . my observation is graphically understated, discovering how the two protagonists tick was so much more stimulating! The mere fact that their cultures are completely different made me wonder whether they’d be hindered by internal influences.

Violet McQueen is a good girl. Loving parents, she’s never wanted for anything. I was smitten with her curiosity which gets the better of her when she comes across something that wasn’t for her eyes. Her discovery doesn’t make sense but without realising it, she opens up a can of worms. Up until now, life’s been kind to her, even a tad boring for her liking. From here on in, her story speeds up at an unimaginable velocity. I don’t believe in coincidences and thankfully there weren’t any in this story. However, unbeknown to her, her family are in the eye of the ever-intriguing Vicente for reasons only he can explain. Who his victim will be is for you to find out too; and surprise, surprise. . . it wasn’t who I thought it would be! And why he’s on a path of vengeance has its own twists that just might bite him back. Very, but very well done on the author’s part here. The saying, “Be careful what you wish for,” couldn’t be more apt.

Vicente. What on earth can I say about this young man who is too drop-dead gorgeous, far too facetious and too downright menacing! I truly didn’t like him. Okay; I did say he got under my skin, but his intentions worried me no end. He also comes across past secrets which were well and truly buried, but that doesn’t stop him walking into the lion’s den like he owns it. And a beautiful young woman will become his prey to avenge on. Or maybe not! He’ll worm himself into her life without compunction, and I bloody well screamed out aloud! Love, hate and deception lie heavily in both Vicente and Violet’s families. I kicked myself for believing he wouldn’t go out of his way to ruin her. That being said, Violet surprised me no end. My mistake in thinking some really heated moments would get the better of her were groundless because she has enough strength of character to tackle almost any difficult situation.

Vicente’s father, Javier, wheeler-dealer in a very resourceful black market, voices his feelings to himself giving the reader a very good idea what he expects of his son. He’s given Javier one long rope but one thing is for sure—the proverb, ‘like father, like son’ which is his wish and demand, has its own twists… Love changes people. Whether they like it or not, Violet and Vicente have to face past happenings not of their making.

Ms Halle’s plot structure is really well done. Overflowing with angst and deceitful scenarios, passionately hot scenes made my toes curl. The transparency of facts were given on all levels except one that niggled me no end. I felt a tad let down by Violet’s parents’ evasiveness regarding certain truths. Their reaction towards their daughter’s questionings not only confused me, but also seemed to throw the very essence of their backstory off balance. What I thought should have been said earlier on in the story to give the reader more emotional stability was for me, dragged out. Nonetheless, the secondary character development is top-notch and what’s in store for all will hopefully be revealed with more twists than turns in the follow up which I can’t wait for. Bravo!
