My name is Melody Greene, and I have a confession to make.

I slept with my student, a senior in high school.

Multiple times.

I had multiple orgasms.

In multiple positions.

I slept with my student and I enjoyed it.

I slept with my student and I’d do it all over again if I could turn back time.

My name is Melody Greene, and I got kicked out of my position as a teacher and did my walk of shame a la Cersei Lannister from the principal’s office, minutes after said principal threatened to call the cops on me.

My name is Melody Greene, and I did something bad because it made me feel good.

Here is why it was totally worth it.

Defy is a smutty, insta-love, insta-lust short novella. Defy is a prequel to Vicious (Sinners of Saint #1).

It is recommended, but unnecessary, to read Defy before reading Vicious.

I don’t know how Shen does it! She’s once again left me aghast, in a babbling mess and wanting more from where this came from. Clearly DEFY reached my expectations! Now then, the beauty of this novella is you don’t need to read VICIOUS. However, I’d highly recommend reading it beforehand as you’ll get the gist of one of the characters who wiggled his way under my skin with an incomparable ease. Don’t despair if you haven’t, though! The story’s argument won’t be lost on you. It’s not too long, not too short, and I devoured it from the first page to the very last one without stopping. I loved how the author’s sandwiched jam-packed action, angst and steaminess between a perfect prologue and an epilogue that left me grinning from ear to ear.

There’s no denying that James Followhill, a.k.a. Jamie is wise beyond his years. Born into the elite, he’s not at all influenced by his peers or social status. I found this aspect of his persona refreshing and comforting at the same time. Seeing as his patience is going to be pushed limit by someone close to home, him not backing down under pressure showed me how strongly he felt about the gal who he’s smitten with. I have to add that I got the impression Jamie was a tad bored with family goings on. But one of the most interesting discoveries I made was his loyalty towards his best mates. All for one and one for all, they fit together like the most complex of jigsaw puzzles. They’re in for the long haul, their friendship even reminded me what my son and his close friends have. Yes, this read is extremely realistic. Although Jamie might not be the leader of the pack, he manages to keep the status quo. Not easily ruffled, his laid-back attitude certainly gained my respect. His sense of humour is second to none and that smile… my oh my, just heart-throbbing!

“Give me your worst. Fail me. Throw me in detention for the rest of the year…”

What interested me more than anything was the two protagonists’ age difference. But Jaime has a mission and he’s dead set on carrying it out regardless. This young man charmed the pants off me, so it’s not difficult to imagine how Melody Green felt about him. Where everything unfolds isn’t in the best of surrounding for either of them, and whether they’re going to be able to keep their taboo affaire de coeur away from prying eyes makes for a real page-turner. The sexual tension is Off. The. Richter. Scale! Bring out the fans ladies, ‘cause you’re going to need them and on full blast at that!

“Turn around and bend down to touch your toes, Little Ballerina.”

Melody’s history is a sad one. Losing her drive and giving up on her dreams for reasons to be divulged upset me. I had to sit back and try to justify them. She’s got to get on, makes ends meet… Not wanting to be where she is frustrated the two of us, too. When least expected, sound advice was given and my hopes were revived. Aha, but not is at all what it seems to be when a huge spanner is in thrown in the works.

“You are the perfect sin to commit, Melody. Begging to be taken.”

Melody can’t seem to control her libido around… hmm, a guy totally out of bounds. Tut-tut, I said smiling to myself! I’m a glutton for the prohibited! She’s out of her depth and literally speaking, a pushover for those who want to make fun of her and encroach on her personal space. She is so freakin’ unpretentious that I couldn’t help but fall hard for her! So, what happens when the ball is thrown in her court is for you to find out for yourselves.

“Real daredevils choose the truth. It’s always more challenging than a dare.”

Ms Shen’s character development is indisputably perfect. I loved all of them except a couple who brought out the worst in me which I might add, most definitely added spice to the story. Exactly what I look in a good read was offered hands down and keep me invested throughout. The storytelling calibre is without a doubt, engaging, enthralling and bold. Delving into the lives of Jamie and Melody with such an ease was a joy. Whose story is next in this saga has me on tenterhooks and I can’t wait for more. Bravo!
