Synopsis

College senior Sabrina James has her whole future planned out: graduate from college, kick butt in law school, and land a high-paying job at a cutthroat firm. Her path to escaping her shameful past certainly doesn’t include a gorgeous hockey player who believes in love at first sight. One night of sizzling heat and surprising tenderness is all she’s willing to give John Tucker, but sometimes, one night is all it takes for your entire life to change.

But the game just got a whole lot more complicated.

Tucker believes being a team player is as important as being the star. On the ice, he’s fine staying out of the spotlight, but when it comes to becoming a daddy at the age of twenty-two, he refuses to be a bench warmer. It doesn’t hurt that the soon-to-be mother of his child is beautiful, whip-smart, and keeps him on his toes. The problem is, Sabrina’s heart is locked up tight, and the fiery brunette is too stubborn to accept his help. If he wants a life with the woman of his dreams, he’ll have to convince her that some goals can only be made with an assist.

Five Review by Rachel & Sharon Thérèse

“Just for the record, I hate hockey players. This is a one – time – only deal.”

We’ve read and reviewed all this series and loved every one of them! There is just something so lovable about Elle’s hockey guys we can’t help but want more! One of our all-time favourite genres is New Adult and when you throw a hot and sexy sport into the mix you have the perfect combination! Elle never fails to win us over with her skillful and witty prose.  The amount of times we highlighted parts on our Kindle is unbelievable! We just love sharp and entertaining banter in our books, but don’t be fooled into thinking this story is only an amusing read. . . no, angst is well-delivered which one would come to expect in this genre.

“I’m not sleeping with you because you bought me a drink.”

“I hope not. I have higher standards than that.”

Unlike the other stories in this series, John Tucker (Tucker), is very different to his team mates. He is not the arrogant-sports-mad-alpha male with an attitude you would expect. No, he’s been brought up with old fashioned values in Texas by his widowed mother and we could not help but fall in love with his charm, sincerity and his mature outlook on life. And of course, we can’t not mention his southern drawl! When reading his dialogue, we swear we could hear it! It was music to our ears. Tucker is mature beyond his years and is very aware that his future does not revolve around hockey. Although he adores the sport, he was very pragmatic about the fact it was his only way to a university education which would give him the best start in life. His plans for the future are to graduate from University and set himself up in a steady business. He also can’t wait to meet the right girl to share his life with. He’s a big believer marriage and a huge romantic. This guy thinks nothing of declaring his love for the right woman but what will he make of the sassy and determined Sabrina? The girl who has no time for relationships. . .

“I hate to tell you this, Sabrina. But you’ve made a big mistake.”

“What? Why?”

“Because I’m going to ruin you for all future guys. I apologize in advance.”

Sabrina is a girl on a mission! She’s not had the best upbringing and has no one to guide her in life. This girl has brought herself up and knows she only has herself to rely on. Abandoned by her mum from a young age and dumped with her selfish grandmother who also happens to be living with her crude and somewhat creepy step-dad! Poor girl, our hearts ached for this unfortunate woman. She has a plan to go to Harvard Law School and escape the life she has been dealt no matter what! The one thing she doesn’t need in her life is anymore complications and distractions, but she doesn’t quite bank on meeting the charming Tucker. He has a special way of melting her ice cold heart which we swear no woman would be immune to. If anyone can do it with his wisecracks and that southern drawl, it’s Tucker! Let’s face it, she’s a twenty something woman who has needs and Tucker is only too willing to provide them.

“You got any guidelines for your just-sex hook-ups? Like no kissing on the lips?”

“Hell no. Do I look like Julia Roberts?”

The sex scenes is this read blew our minds! Wow, at times we feared our Kindles may have short-circuited! Steamy and sensual were the name of the game for these two characters. Tucker certainly knew how to work up Sabrina until she couldn’t utter a word. I’m sure we both blushed on more than one occasions at their antics!

“C’mere and fuck my face. I need more of that.”

“You’re gonna want to brace yourself because I’m going to make you come again.”

“You’re so fucking cocky.”

“No. I’m sure. And so are you. Now gimme that sweet pussy and ride my tongue.”

They do say the path to true love does not run smoothly and it certainly seemed the case for Sabrina and Tucker! Both parties fully deserved a happy and solid life for very different reasons. We rooted for them both from the very start and could’ve thrown our Kindles at times when Sabrina held back from saying the things we would’ve loved to hear! She is so hell bent on achieving an Ivy League education to escape the hell that is her life. She literally eats, sleeps and works only to do it all over again the next day. We felt she was missing out on one of the best things to ever come her way. Fortunately, Tucker did not share our impatience with Sabrina which is one of the other qualities we loved about him. If there was ever a perfect match for her, it was him. He had patience, selflessness and  loyalty in spades and when a life changing situation occurs which throws them both a curve ball, he just shows us yet again what a genuine guy he really is.

“….. God Tuck, I’ve only thought of one thing my entire life – crawling out of this hellhole. And now I have to drag someone down with me and I don’t know if I can do it.”

“You’re not alone. And you’re not dragging anyone down. I’m here with you, Sabrina. Every step of the way.”

We literally ate this story up like one of our favourite desserts! Meeting up with all the Briar hockey boys was a bonus too as we got to hear all about their lives with their respective girlfriends. As ever with Elle’s books, we are spoilt with excellent character development and such great storytelling. Her words just leapt off the page and  while we were basking in such splendour, she did torment with a good deal of angst. Ms Kennedy, may you keep on writing these charming and lovable characters as we will keep on reading. Bravo!

“My goal, once upon a time, was to succeed. I didn’t realize that success wasn’t about grades or scholarships or achievements, but the people I was lucky enough to have in my life.”
