Down and Out is the third novel in the Caroline Springs Charter series and I can only say that I loved it as much as the other two books.
OMG, talk about emotions running high because they most certainly did just that! From the very start, my heart broke but it was slowly put back together again. I was so pleased to see the other characters we all know and love and the fact that the big statement throughout the book was no matter what happens, you’re not alone; that family sticks together in good and bad times and everyone pulls together was for me, an important factor.
Kalen, aka Dive, a biker who certainly knows what he wants, does everything in his power to get it. However, his love life hasn’t worked out exactly how he’d wished and he finds himself alone, in a lot of pain and his hands are full of extra responsibilities he wasn’t counting on. My big-hearted biker; yes, he’s mine but struggling to come to terms with the lies that were kept hidden. He decides to leave town for a while and goes to stay with his mom.
“It hurts Mum. It fucking kills me.”
“I know my baby boy. I know, and that pain will last a long time. But you need to go with it, don’t bottle that up and let it fester. Let it out Kalen.”
Wow, did this quirky woman make me laugh with her fantastic traits and how well she pulls her baby boy out of his head. Anyway, several months later he makes a wise decision. Moving forward under the circumstances he finds himself in wasn’t as easy as he thought it would be since a whole lot of problems arise. One of them being a young woman who enters into his life bringing with her more emotion than he can handle, doesn’t need or even want.
Mena is very alone in the world and due to her past, is living out of her car. She sees a job ad, applies for it and is employed by Dive as he feels she’s capable of doing it well. Happiness, to have a nice home and to be financially comfortable is her only wish. Yet never in a million years did she know what she was letting herself in for. My heart went out for her. Even though she’s being treated appallingly, she can’t leave the job she desperately needs. At one point, I wanted to shout… come on girl, stand up for yourself! The attraction and friendship grows but neither are acting on it. And after over hearing something no woman wants to hear, she realizes she is truly alone and she runs.
“Mr Brooks, please don’t. It’s better this way anyway—”
I cried, I laughed and I got mad. It’s also one of those series you can reread over and over and never get bored. I know I didn’t. Well done Lila. I can’t wait for the next installment in this series. This beautifully written, all encompassing and emotionally charged read fully deserves my five star rating.
