They call me a slut. Maybe I am.
Sometimes I do things I despise.
Sometimes men take without asking.

But I have a musical gift, only a year left of high school, and a plan.
With one obstacle.

Emeric Marceaux doesn’t just take.
He seizes my willpower and bangs it like a dark note.
When he commands me to play, I want to give him everything.
I kneel for his punishments, tremble for his touch, and risk it all for our stolen moments.

He’s my obsession, my master, my music.
And my teacher.

Dark Notes Pam Godwin Paperback

KFF’s 5 High-pitched Stars Review by Sharon Thérèse Nuttall

The stunning cover and a title which conjures up an imagine of darkness opened up my appetite. Less than ten percent into this read and I was left with my mouth wide open and did something I rarely do… Putting it down wasn’t an option so I found myself flipping the pages at a virtually impossible rate in the most obscure of places. Goodness me! I consider yours truly a tad faint-hearted; however, I can honestly say that I was spellbound, bowled over and delighted by the author’s storytelling techniques. Dark Notes is provoking; in many instances the conflicting feelings drawn out were beyond perfection and left me spent. One minute I was utterly sad, the next I had hope; even rapturous joy. The book reaches its crescendo at a commendable pace and when I thought everything was under control and began to sigh with relief, wham-bam, I was thrown back into a turmoil of emotions.

These sentiments were kindled because of Ivory. How could my heart not go out to her when all said and done, dimensions of her character were dark and deeply hidden secrets and only hers to tell! Her strong craving for a better life and a fighting spirit to achieve her goal was to my mind of thinking, beyond admirable. I wouldn’t dream of mentioning her past as in effect, most certainly spoil the story for you. But I will say this. Ivory will do everything in her power to exist in the extreme present conundrum she is in. I cried for this brave, determined and head-strong lass so many times that I lost count. Suffering at the hands of people close to her and not so close to her too, no-one knows and no-one cares. But she still lets them take whatever they want from her simply because there was no other way out. She was for me, a classic example of the survival of the fittest. I was horrified to see how jealousy and selfishness from those around her had. She has nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing except an incredible talent. Yet going out of their way to make her life miserable is a fact.

“Nothing is inconceivable, and everything is possible. The proof is in the magic of music.”

Emeric Marceaux walks into her life full of himself. Cocksure and apart from being drop-dead gorgeous, he is not only the best in his profession, but also has a knack for picking up on details others would never do. The very first time he set eyes on her, I felt his concern, his anger and his wish to delve deeper. Hmm…he titters on the verge of an extremely fine line since circumstances are against him. Him spreading it too thin, him… oh deary me, being such a risk-taker left me in awe of author’s ability to develop a character as is Emeric. His no holds barred relationship with his parents was a breath of fresh air. His stubbornness, virtues and provisions for future adversities were in the right place at all times. Not to mention that his desires are like dark notes played on the keyboard of the very best two hundred and thirty stringed instrument that his protégé plays in a quintessential musical harmony.

“With one hand, he taps with tenderness and self-control while his other bangs with intensity and dominance.”

This read is without any doubt, a prohibitively sexy one. It puts the word trust into perspective. It highlights many delicate issues which unfortunately, are conveniently ignored when the career-powered upper class deem to have the upper-hand regardless of the consequences for whom they consider, lower-class personas. Narrated in present from both protagonists’ point of view is a huge plus and the banter… no words! The secondary characters are superbly created regardless of whether I liked them or not. The word excellent seems to be little to sum up a novel that had me on tenterhooks throughout. One word Ms Godwin from a new reader of your works has only got to be Bravo!

Oops… a noteworthy playlist has to be listened to. Truly phenomenal and even though I can’t stop wondering if the author is a musician, I would like to add from a frustrated musician that her choice of concertos is sublime.

“Sit on the edge. Legs spread. Right foot on the lowest keys, left foot on the highest.”
