Brings her home.

Jade Childs spent ten years in captivity, but now that she’s back, the real battle for survival begins. The media shadows her. Flashbacks haunt her. Her old life evades her. Her so-called new life rejects her. She spent too many years in the dark to recognize the light. She spent too long repressing her feelings to remember how to express them. She spent a decade abandoning hope and cannot dare letting it back into her life. Jade’s not just defined by what happened to her—she’s collared to it.

When the twenty-seven-year-old woman is found,
A community wants to know the story,
Parents want to forget the story,
Friends want to be a part of the story,
And the man who still loves her faces the greatest challenge yet: letting her go.

COLLARED REVIEW LABEL1

By Sharon Thérèse Nuttall

I’ve just finished this book after reading it in two sittings and literally have no idea how to start this review. My emotions were stretched to the limit; it left me numb, happy, sad, plain exhausted. Told in present tenses from the female protagonist’s point of view, I found the grammatical structure used a feat in itself considering that the subject is extremely delicate and revolves around past events. Comprehensibly, this book isn’t overflowing with banter and neither did I feel the need for it. Nevertheless, what dialogue there is between all the characters is extremely good, especially in chapter one where we get to know two teenagers madly in love with each other. Then boom! From here on in I was taken on a staggeringly heart-breaking journey. Never in a million years could I ever have imagined the twist that was to come. I. Was. Stupefied! In fact, there are more bends than in a wiggly hairpin which only added to unlimited angst. At the end of the story, I didn’t know what to do with myself and as I’m still suffering from a monstrous book hangover, my thoughts on a high, low… totally out of control, picking up another read is for now, out of the question.

What can I tell you about Jade Childs’ traumatic teenage experience without giving anything away? I instantly invested in this happy and outgoing lass; however, something didn’t seem to ring true. It was all too perfect, too beautiful. In a split of a second, her life is shattered to smithereens and in another, the ground was pulled from underneath my feet. What should have been the best moments in her youth converted into ten long years of utter agony; every detail is crudely described and I can honestly say that I wasn’t prepared for such a fallout. She barely survives and coming out unscathed from an ordeal so horrendous was not only impossible, but also made for very hard reading. Consequently, the lines became blurred with tears.

Struggling to have a little normalcy is taking one step forward, two steps back. She can’t open up, she feels smothered by most of her family, her state of mind…fragile. Why her loved ones treat her the way they do and have difficulty handling their damaged daughter who I thought, beyond repair, was understandable. The press diving in like vultures twenty-four-seven causes much unrest in more ways than one, and is a strong factor in Jade’s story. Throughout the read, I desperately needed to see a light at the end of the tunnel and couldn’t wait for her to seek professional help which earlier, was offered. It took me a while to warm up to her sister whose standoffishness was cruel. Her father is at a loss; her mother tries her best but nothing seems to work. Except one person. Torrin. He has the key. He will take control simply because he worships her. Worship being the optimal word as you will discover.

“He’s the tether that keeps me from falling away.”

Undying love tied by the medulla, the heart and soul has always been just them! Tears are falling on the keyboard while writing about these two outstanding characters. Very slowly, Torrin’s quest to find the girl who was virtually stolen from under his nose unravels. What a man! He has the patience of a saint, understanding and how guilt-ridden this poor man is. For me, he is beyond god-fearing. But I got so angry with him and know I was being unfair because in dire circumstances like this one, call for dire decisions to be made. How often I asked myself the question; “If only…?”

“You and Torrin, you two could never just do anything.”

All the character development is nothing less than sublime. The editing impeccable. Believe it or not, the one issue I had with this book was in its finality. I truly think this couple deserved a less bitter-sweet ending in all its realistic perfection, and even though I tried my hardest to have a change of heart, I cried for more. Saying that, and after having had a few hours to recuperate, I have to respect Jade’s wishes and Torrin’s complaisance to them. Ms Williams, this is the first novel I have read by you and I will read it again and again. Hopefully with Rachel, my sister-in-arms who is dying to read it, will find comfort in my outstretched hand. So looking forward to reading more works by you. Bravismo!

“Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”

COLLARED LABEL EXCERPT1

I feel something swirl at my ankle, then it grabs me. I’m sucked under instantly as the undercurrent slams me to the ocean bottom and tumbles me around. It’s happened before, so I don’t panic. I know that once it’s done with me, it will let me go. Once it’s twirled me around a few times, it will leave me alone.

I can feel it starting to lose momentum when two arms brace around me and break me free. When we pop through the surface, Torrin spins me around, terror drawing up his expression.

“Are you okay?” He holds me with one hand, inspecting me with the other like he’s going to find an elbow or organ missing.

I’m totally wet. I feel ocean water draining out of my ears and nose. My hair feels like a cyclone just had its way with it, and I know my skin’s red and blotchy from the sand exfoliation treatment I just received free of charge.

I laugh. This is what alive feels like. I remember.

It’s adrenaline pulsing so hard in my veins they feel about to burst. It’s feelings that twist my stomach into knots. It’s feeling so cold my body goes numb and so attracted to someone my body feels the opposite of numb.

This is it. Living. I can almost feel the blood warm in my veins as it starts to run again.

“Why are you laughing?” Torrin’s face flashes with relief when he sees I’m okay, but he doesn’t let go of me.

On the beach, my parents slowly make their way back to the beach blankets once they’ve seen I’m okay.

“That was fun.” I rub my stomach because it hurts. From the laughter. I’d forgotten stomachs could hurt from laughing.

“Fun? Not my idea of fun.”

I wipe the water from my face and find just as much sand pasted to it. “What’s your idea of fun then?”

Torrin’s still shaking his head when he suddenly shouts, “This!”

He pulls me under the water with him. He lets me go right away, but I don’t want him to. I don’t want him to ever let go.

I splash him when he resurfaces a few feet away. “Did you just dunk me?”

He splashes back. “I just did.”

“You’ve heard of payback, right?” I move a little closer, ignoring the way I can feel my parents watching us from the beach.

“I’ve heard of it. Not really a big fan though.”

When I lunge at him and try to knock him under, he’s clearly bracing for it because all I do is smash into him. My wet body against his, our arms tangled together, our faces too close to not be aware of where each other’s mouths are . . .

“What’s this payback thing again?” He’s practically gloating, so I come at it from a different angle.

My eyes drop to his mouth and stay there until his lips part from his breaths coming faster. When my hand curves against the side of his face, sweeping down the line of his jaw, I feel his chest moving hard against mine. His arms tangle tighter behind me because I’m slipping through them. When that doesn’t work, he hoists me higher, and his arms form a net beneath my backside.

I need to clear my head before I can’t remember what I’m doing.

My eyes lift to his and hold there. When he blinks, a drop of water rolls off his eyelashes. My hand slides lower until my thumb is touching the corner of his mouth.

“Torrin?” I whisper, my mouth lowering.

“Yeah?” His voice is rough, coming from low in his throat.

I move my mouth just outside his ear. “This . . . is . . .”—I burst free of his hold and slide his legs out from beneath him with my foot—“payback!”

He goes down with a surprised shout and an explosive splash. I’m laughing again, and so is he when he pops his head above the water.

“Well played, Childs.”

“Thank you very much,” I say with a bow, hoping he can’t see right through me the way I feel he can sometimes.

If he does, he’ll know. He’ll know I would have rather kissed him. I would rather still be kissing him. He’ll know that while I’m content to put most of the past behind me, there’s one part I want to pack and bring with me to the future.

           Him.

I think he might see it though, because I think I might see it in him too.

The sun catches his eyes just right when he looks at me. “You always had a way of taking the ground right out from beneath me.”

Kindle Friends Forever: Four Forever Stars

Reviewed by Rachel McEwan & Sharon Thérèse Nuttall

No less than thirteen well-established authors so how on earth, we asked ourselves, did these ladies accomplish such a feat and why, in the name of literacy art, would they want to do what they have done! Never taking anything for granted in this cut-throat self-publishing book world, we could only imagine the fun they must have had, the work involved, and the dedication to get it right while sharing files, chats and discussions toing and froing every detail of a book written on this scale. Perhaps because of their desire to pull off the impossible between true friends and professionals in their expertise, or perhaps because they wanted to make a dream come true. Only they know why. The bottom line is without a doubt, a read which has shown us that there is still confidence and respect for one another’s works. And the urge to do something new and refreshing is by far, the very best way to show the reader that when there is a will, there is a way.

“… I love the tattoos. I could lick all of them all day and not get bored. The one on your stomach? That’s breakfast, lunch and dinner…”

Ms. Anastasia sets the first scene where we meet Verity Michaels who happens to find herself between a rock and a hard place. Well, in a cab actually. Not ashamed to say what she thinks and in her early twenties, we loved her sassiness. We could easily picture her in a job which wasn’t exactly right up her alley. New surroundings are a tad overwhelming for her, but what the heck, she’s game for just about anything within reason. Eager to get to know her adopted city is going to take her on a journey or two. Us too!

“Don’t put words in my mouth.”
“Would you prefer something else?”

From then on in, chapter after chapter flows with such an ease that we were to put it mildly, more than impressed. The character development isn’t in the least bit hindered by the thirteen writers; the storyline grabs you, the mystery surrounding the male protagonist kept us stuck to every page. Don’t you just love unanswered questions? Messages flew between us as we were trying our hardest to fathom out who he was. It has to be said that the Verity was also wondering what made Hudson tick as much as we were. Our constant texting was comparable with Verity’s ‘tweeting’ abilities; mind you, hers were much better than ours. And then the packages delivered daily to Verity’s boss. Never could we have ever guessed what was inside each one! When all was revealed, we weren’t the only ones who were shocked!

“…you’re charming the pants right off me, Tattoo.”
“You’re wearing a skirt. Does that mean you’re commando, Honeybee?”
“Damn you.”

Hudson! What a very secretive, intriguing and sexy guy he was. We simply adored him. He had a tendency to pop up at some of the best moments, too. We couldn’t quite make him out to start with as he did keep a lot of information back about himself. Hence the secretiveness! He is everything Verity does not go for in a man but he is just too irresistible for words. He has the manners of a white knight but the personality traits of a tattooed bad ass biker, so what’s not to love about him, right? We could definitely see why Verity had issues in keeping away from him!

“How do you want me to fuck you?”
“Hard and fast, or slow and easy?”
“Next time.”
“Next time?”
“Next time hard and fast so you can you your favourite hashtag.”

Fifty percent into the book and author, Katherine Stevens, had us in fits. Envisaging the reason for Verity’s embarrassment was absolutely hilarious and a bit painful. Although she needn’t have worried because there was a solution at hand! A super-sexy-hot-solution! But previously, all the authors had had us enthralled with the way each and every one of them added to the plot and developed the storyline.

“You’re a total criminal, aren’t you?”
“Have I stolen your heart yet?”
“What?”
“Don’t answer. I won’t take it until you give it freely.”

Giggles and innuendos were definitely the name of the game in this book! We lost count of the full on belly laughs we had throughout this read. To say we were a little worried about mixing 13 authors different writing styles in one book would be an understatement; however, those fears were totally unfounded. Their own unique writing styles blended together like a cup of your favourite barista style coffee! If you are looking for a light, funny and simply side splitting read with a couple of twists thrown in just for good measure, then look no further because this book delivers in spades! Bravo ladies.
