AP - Synopsis

When a seventeen-year-old girl vanishes,
A community is shaken.
Parents turn desperate.
Friends hold vigils.
And the boy who loves her searches.

When a year goes by,
The community is recovering.
Parents feel hopeless.
Friends feel helpless.
And the boy who loves her continues his search.

When ten years go by,
The community has forgotten.
Parents cling to the past.
Friends move toward the future.
And the boy who loves her . . .

Brings her home.

Jade Childs spent ten years in captivity, but now that she’s back, the real battle for survival begins. The media shadows her. Flashbacks haunt her. Her old life evades her. Her so-called new life rejects her. She spent too many years in the dark to recognize the light. She spent too long repressing her feelings to remember how to express them. She spent a decade abandoning hope and cannot dare letting it back into her life. Jade’s not just defined by what happened to her—she’s collared to it.

When the twenty-seven-year-old woman is found,
A community wants to know the story,
Parents want to forget the story,
Friends want to be a part of the story,
And the man who still loves her faces the greatest challenge yet: letting her go.

AP- Excerpt

He holds my eyes, not letting them wander away from him. “Why have you been avoiding me?”

I wander my room, not sure where to go now that he’s here. I’m not sure where I fit now. I’m not sure where I belong in his life.

“You know why,” I say quietly.

“I want to hear you tell me.”

“So I can change your mind.” His hands slide into his front pockets, and the sunlight catches on his dad’s watch and casts golden beams through the room. It lights up like someone just lit a million candles at once. “I can’t do that unless I know exactly why you don’t want to see me.”

He wants a reason? I’ll give him a whole list of them.

“Because I don’t want to drag you into my mess of a world any more than I already have. Because I don’t want to smear you through the mud on the media’s march to burying me. Because I don’t want to hurt you—again—and because I want to protect you.”

“I can protect myself from them.”

I shake my head and cover my chest with my hand. “To protect you from me.”

Torrin’s jaw hardens. He works it loose the moment after. “I don’t need protection from you.”

“Everyone needs protection from me. There’s something dark in me now, Torrin, and I can’t get it out. It’s growing, spreading, and I don’t want it to infect the people I love.”

He pushes off the closet doors and crosses the room before I know he’s coming. “There is nothing dark in you, Jade. Nothing.” He backs me into the wall and stares at me, unblinking. “There is light and good in you. There always has been. There always will be.”

“That’s gone. He took it from me.”

“No, he didn’t.” Torrin’s hand slams into the wall beside my head. “It’s still there. You had to bury it to keep it safe, but it’s still there. You’ll find it. I know it.”

I want to believe him, but that doesn’t make it true. “You can’t find what isn’t there, Torrin.”

“Dammit, stop talking like that,” he says, his jaw tensing. “It’s there. I know it.”

“I’ve tried. I can’t find it.” Even as I say it, I start to feel different. It’s because of him being so close, saying what he is in the way he is. He’s the tether that keeps me from floating away.

His eyes lower to mine. “I’ll help you find it.”

I feel my heart again. My lungs. Everything else. I feel it waking up. “What makes you so sure you can find it?”

“Because when I look in your eyes, I still see it.” His other hand fits against the wall beside my head. “Because when I’m close to you like this, I can still feel it.” He leans a little closer, and I feel something too. “It’s there, Jade. It’s not gone. He took ten years of your life—ten years.” The corners of his eyes crease as an emotion fires in his eyes. “Don’t hand him the rest of it by believing that kind of shit.”

About the Author

Cat Porter was born and raised in New York City, but also spent a few years in Europe, Texas and the suburbs along the way. As an introverted, only child, she had very big, but very secret dreams for herself. She graduated from Vassar College, was a struggling actress, an art gallery girl, special events planner, freelance writer, and had all sorts of other crazy jobs all hours of the day and night to help make those dreams come true. She has two children’s books traditionally published under her maiden name. She now lives in Greece with her husband and three children, and freaks out regularly and still daydreams way too much. She is addicted to old movies, the History Channel, her iPad, her husband’s homemade red wine, really dark chocolate, and her Nespresso coffee machine. Writing keeps her somewhat sane, extremely happy, and a productive member of society.

EPISODE 4 – Meet me by the Kama Sutra

I don’t think I’m imagining it. She keeps looking over at me today, I’m sure of it.
I’ve been writing in the library for three weeks now, a half-hearted attempt to save both my money and my heart from the effect of the endless espressos that accompany trying to work in the local cafe. It’s quite charming as libraries go, housed in an old Victorian building with lots of side rooms and lamp-lit nooks. I’m missing my coffee hit but it’s certainly a charismatic sort of place, and right from day one I’ve caught one of the librarians watching me out of the corner of her perfectly made up eye.
I’ll tell you something else I’m not imagining, either. She wears stockings to work. I haven’t been letching, but sometimes when she clears the books from the table I’m working at or comes close by to file away a pile of returned books, I can see the outline of the catches pressing beneath her skirt.
That’s not normal, is it? I mean, it is in my fantasies, but most women don’t wear stockings on a day-to-day basis in reality, do they? The fact that she does tells me stuff about her. It tells me that she’s confident, and that she embraces her own sexuality. That’s not a sexist thing to say, is it? I don’t mean it to be. It’s a compliment. I love that she’s not apologetic about the fact she’s fucking beautiful, that she chooses to wear clothes that celebrate rather than shroud her body. Make no mistake about it, this girl is packing some serious pin-up curves; she looks like she belongs in the nineteen fifties drinking cocktails with Marilyn Monroe rather than stacking sci-fi books alphabetically, as she appears to be tasked with this afternoon.

Now then readers, this is when KFF get a tad serious regarding this series which we have had the luxury of reading and will continue to do so for the next few Fridays. While weighing up the pros and cons of such shorter then short reads, we have come to this conclusion and not before time. They are just what the doctor ordered after a stressful week! The author’s strategy was made clear from the very beginning and has its purpose. To make the last day of week more bearable. Wherever you happen to be, whatever you happen to be doing, good laughs and super sexy characters are guaranteed. Therefore, we have no option but to take our hats off to Ms French for breaking boundaries. Something new, fresh and exciting; something that has never been done before was to our way of thinking, risky; nevertheless, a real tease.

This Friday’s read is all about books. Well, a librarian to be exact. And Huey. Huey’s feeling sorry for himself for reasons to be revealed, but when he looks in all the wrong direction, or right depending on how one looks at it the sexy panorama in front of his eyes, one thing leads to another! And guess what? His down becomes an up… pun intended, of course!

“Do you specialise in any particular area? I might be able to point you in the right direction.”

Kitty has given this ‘quickie’ another dimension that we didn’t see in other issues. Told in first person from both protagonists’ points of view only added to our pleasure; throwing in innuendos and wisecracks had us cracking up. Since we don’t want to spoil this hottie, we shall say no more but we do highly recommend one-clicking these Viagra Girls’ issues exclusively published on Amazon.

Even though we have no idea how you’re going to keep this pace up or what is in store for us next Friday, congrats are in order. Bravo!

“Ah, the Crow, otherwise known as the sixty-nine. I fucking love the good old sixty-nine.”
