KFF’s five star review by Claire Rose

All I can say is O.M.G! Wow…what an emotionally intense read. For most of us, we can relate to someone who is suffering with the events that happens in this beautifully written story. I would advise that to get an understanding of Jesse, read the other books in the series first.

River has done it again! While we all love this series and have been waiting patiently for the fun loving Jesse and Belle’s story, I know you won’t be disappointed because I certainly wasn’t. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to read and review this story.

Belle is a twenty-three old nurse who still lives at home with her parents, and who are keeping her on a tight lead following the disappearance of her younger sister, Paige. After five years of no news, there is no closure for Belle and her family. She’s on a night out celebrating her birthday, and her friends try to convince her it’s time to move forward and live life. But she doesn’t quite see it that way. Her night isn’t going as planned, but her friends come up with an idea that swirls a little hope inside of her.

Jesse. Fun-loving, always there to help others, uses women for one night and also living a life where he can’t move on. He has a past that no-one wants to go through. His family life wasn’t all roses with an over controlling and abusive father. He joined the military and fought for his country until one attack on his unit leaves him with guilt and nightmares. Put these two together and what do we have? BOOM! After meeting nurse Belle, he knows she is more than a one night stand, but decides he is not the man for her. However, after Belle turns up at the club asking for help to try and find her sister; he agrees on one condition—he wants her to go out on a date with him. And so a friendship is formed and Jesse’s head gets even more messed up. He wants Belle and he knows she wants him, but news of his father dying is pushing all Jesse’s limits.

Things have heated up and the pair of them are explosive together. Jesse’s still pushing his past away and Belle’s lying to her parents. When things start to spiral out of control for him, he loses the best thing that’s happened to him but he doesn’t realise it.

Quote ~ Jesse: “I thought I told you to go home. No one likes a fucking hang on. I fucked you, okay. I don’t need some second-rate bitch trying to get back in. I’m done. Done.”

At this point in the novel my heart goes out to Belle who is trying to love Jesse, find her sister and still living by her parents rules. Even the club doesn’t know what to do with him as he loses himself in booze and the big hole he has created.

Can they both overcome their pasts; can they both move forward, and do they both get what they deserve? Will their love be enough to overcome everything? Read it and find out. This story was perfection for me… River’s best yet. Telling how someone with P.T.S.D and someone who is dealing with a missing relative struggle with life just enthralled me. So for this reason I award this book five amazing stars. Keep up the good work and I can’t wait for Beau’s story.

I wake up to the heat of someone’s palm against my shoulder. Twisting around, my hand moves faster than my brain, and I snatch it off me.

“Jesse, it’s me, Bell,” she rushes out before I can take it any further.

“Fuck.” I release my grip on her arm and sit up, forcing myself back to the here and now.

“Did I hurt you?” I reach for her searching for any sign of a mark left by me.

“It’s fine. You barely touched me.” She holds her arm out letting me inspect it. I check it over one more time before releasing her and relaxing.

“You wanna talk about it?” I study her face, eyes calm, soft mouth. She’s not freaking out.

“Just some shit that visits my dreams sometimes, nothing that needs to touch you,” I reply, shocked I’m not retreating.

“I don’t mind, Jesse,” she pushes, and I almost cave. Almost.

“The last thing I want to do is talk about this shit, Bell.” She doesn’t argue or press, and I’m grateful for it. I don’t think I’d be able to keep my cool if she did.

“Come back to sleep.” She lies back down and I follow her. She doesn’t ask me any more questions, or make me feel like I need to tell her everything.

“That ever happens again, don’t wake me,” I warn. A menacing thought strikes through me picturing what could have happened if I didn’t wake in time. She’s lucky I didn’t hurt her, like the last time a woman touched me while I had a nightmare.

“You don’t always have to be so brave, Jesse.” Her hand moves to my dog tags. I don’t stop her. I’m starting to like the feeling of her hands touching them.

“Never tried to be, Bell. But talking doesn’t help me. Never has.” I think back to the time when I did try and it forced me out of control. Talking about those triggers only amplified my insecurities. When death sits afar, mocking you in the dangerous confines of your surroundings, it fucks with your head; nothing was going to change it.

Besides, my issues weren’t what I had done. They were what I had survived. My conscience wasn’t clear and my honor wasn’t clean.

“Promise me you won’t touch me.” I keep my tone even, controlled.

“I promise.” I take her hand in mine and bring it to my lips. Maybe one day I will let someone in. Let her in.

Today isn’t that day.

But today, I didn’t push her away.

That has to count for something.
