Title: Overruled

Series: The Legal Briefs #1

Author: Emma Chase

Release Date: 28th April, 2015

Genre: Contemporary Romance

As a DC defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing – with his southern drawl, disarming smile and captivating green eyes – he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart and mother of his beloved ten-year old daughter. Jenny is getting married — to someone who isn’t him.

That’s definitely not part of the plan.

Sofia Santos is a city raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her “friend with mind-blowing benefits” begs for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him – to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi – to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves.

Her head tells her she’s crazy…and her heart says something else entirely.

What happens when you mix a one stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise and even the best laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

“Hey, stranger, long time, no see.” My eyes are drawn to the sumptuous form of Sofia Marinda Santos, my co-counsel—among other things—as she walks up to our table.

Clothes don’t just make the man—they make a statement for a woman. They speak particularly rapturously for Sofia. She dresses as she is—impeccable, sharp, classy, yet so damn sexy it makes my mouth water. Her red silk blouse is tastefully buttoned, revealing only a few inches of bronze skin below her collarbone—not even a hint of cleavage. But the material accents the God-given bounty of her ample breasts—full, firm, and f*cking gorgeous. A short, gray tweed jacket covers long, elegant arms, and the matching pencil skirt hugs the rounded swell of her hips before revealing toned legs that go on for days.

“Where were you hiding?” I ask, then point to an empty chair.

“You want to join us?”

Naturally ruby lips smile back. “Thank you, but no, I just finished having lunch with Brent in the back.”

I gesture while making the introductions. “Drew Evans, this is Sofia Santos, a fellow child molester liberator according to your wife.” Sofia’s dark brow arches slightly at the description, but I continue.

“Soph, this is Drew Evans, my old college buddy, my current investment banker, and just an all-around rude bastard.”

Ignoring my dig, he extends his hand. “Nice to meet you, Sofia.”

She checks the time on her Rolex and teases, “You should finish up here too, Stanton. Don’t want to miss the verdict.”

I’m shaking my head before she’s done speaking. Because we’ve been debating this since the trial started. “I’ve got all the time in the world, darlin’. Hell, we may even order dessert—that jury isn’t coming back until Monday, at the earliest.”

“You may be the Jury Charmer.” Her manicured fingers swirl in a circle, like she’s conjuring a crystal ball. “But I’m the Jury Seer. And I see those housewives wanting to scratch this trial off their to-do lists for the weekend.”

“The Jury Charmer?” Drew comments dryly. “That’s adorable.”

I give him the jerk-off sign with my hand while insisting to Sofia, “Your vision is off this time.”

Her mouth purses. “Care to make a wager on that, big boy?”

“What are your terms, sweet thing?” I counter with a daring grin.

Evans watches our exchange with unconcealed mirth.

She braces her hands on the table, leaning forward. And I have a whole new esteem for gravity—because it’s that force that causes her blouse to pull away from her body, giving me a delectable view of her stunning tits encased in delicate black lace.

“The Porsche.”

Caught off guard, my eyes widen. She’s not messing around. She knows my silver 911Carrera 4S Cabriolet convertible is my prized possession. The first thing I bought myself when I was hired at the prestigious Adams & Williamson law firm four years ago. It’s pristine. It doesn’t come out in the rain. It doesn’t get parked where a bird could sh*t on it. It doesn’t get driven by anyone but me.

“When the jury comes back today, you let me take your Porsche out for the ride of its life.”

She stares me down, waiting.

I rub my knuckles along my jaw, debating.

“It’s a stick shift,” I warn in a low voice.

“Pft—child’s play.”

“What do I get if—when—you lose the bet?”

She straightens up, looking pleased with herself, even though she hasn’t heard my terms. “What do you want?”

The image of Sofia’s curves barely covered in a tiny red bikini, damp and soapy with suds, infiltrates my brain. And I can’t hold back the lewd smile that graces my face. “You have to wash the Porsche, by hand, once a week for a month.”

She doesn’t hesitate. “Done.”

Before we shake on it, I look into her eyes and spit deliberately on my palm. Our grasp is sliding and slick. Her nose crinkles, but her eyes—her eyes simmer with an amused heat only I can read.

She likes it.

Rachel: So, your buddy reader asks if you want to read and review Emma Chase’s new book and it’s just coming up to the kids’ Easter holidays. Sharon’s absurd question took me two seconds to answer… Hell yes! I’m in because, all said and done, her new book merits a pause… or two, or three!

Sharon: Pause… most definitely Rachel. In fact, I totally blame the author as every mundane chore was put on standby. This engrossing read about a lawyer with a difference, memorized me.

Rachel: Were you only memorized Sharon? Stanton bloody well kicks arse, talks dirty, and if anyone of my book lovers knows how to please his woman, it has to be the protagonist in this story, or could it be Drew who you were so obsessed with? He had had a happy ending in ‘Tied.’ Kate who stole his heart or have you forgotten?

Sharon: How on earth could I ever forget this detail Rachel? I adored the tight relationship these two guys have had throughout the Tangled Series. And for a matter of fact, the way the group of lifelong friends kept being mentioned in this read was an absolute joy. Okay, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of this story Rachel.

Rachel: Right ladies, got your panties on ‘cos Stanton Shaw’s southern charm will make you wish you hadn’t! Good-looking, charming, and at the top of his game through hard work and a hell of a lot of sacrifices will make you melt, question your beliefs and make you shout out a loud for what is morally questionable. Let’s look at what Sharon has to say! But first, let me share this little piece of Drew and Stanton …….

Quotes ~ Stanton: ‘’You know my daughter, Presley?’’

Drew: ‘’Sure. Cute kid, hot mom. Unfortunate name.‘’

Sharon: Firstly Rachel, I truly believe that IMDb’s ratings are so much more just. (Take note Amaz*n and Go*dreads!) So therefore I wouldn’t think twice about breaking all the rules in the ‘book’… excuse the pun, and rate this read with ten stars. Why? Because it’s nothing less than frigging marvellous! Not only has the author’s penmanship bowled both of us over like a four-leaf clover, she also has an incredible ability to suck the reader into the story from the first chapter, the first paragraph, the first sentence, the first word! Uncannily, while we were messaging each other’s opinions— hairs stood on end, goose pimples arose, Rachel’s thoughts were virtually on par with mine. Yes, the guy who we hated to love in the Tangled Series; our beloved Drew, is giving good advice, or maybe not, to one of his best of friends, Stanton! Sink into this incredibly well written read… let it take you over! It’s a never-ending story, a story you don’t want to finish but at the same time, dying to discover how really strong characters overcome their personal hurdles. Irrespective of Stanton and Sofia’s passion, their double moral standards certainly made me sit back and think.

Rachel: How did you feel about this Sharon?

Sharon: Although I’m sure it’s not to everyone’s liking, I actually felt quite good about it Rachel! Every one of us has an option about how one should deal with such a delicate issue if it’s given to them. Sofia knew how Stanton felt about Jenn and their high-spirited ten-year-old daughter, Presley, and at times, I could have happily stepped into the book and given Sofia a piece of my mind. But she was fully aware of the situation and whether or not one believes that Sophia got the raw end of the deal, it was her decision.

Quote ~ Presley: “I’m very disappointed in both of you. I want you to sit here and think about your behaviour. And next time, I expect you to make better choices.”

Rachel: Erm, I’m not sure if I agree with you. Jenn and Stanton were the ultimate American sweethearts. A high school romance of the first degree, and so young too. First love is what it is, and all said and done, she wanted him to carry on with his law studies regardless of what had happened.

Quote ~ Stanton: ‘’I have loved you since I was twelve years old, and I will love you until the day I die.’’

Sharon: Exactly Rachel! Albeit Jenn’s choice didn’t include Stanton, she was convinced it was the only solution. Should she have done what she did? Was it a selfish sacrifice? Did she do it because her family was more important to her than his career? At the beginning, maybe. Later on, everything complicates in such a way that one becomes more and more invested in their story. Who rocked my world and literally took my breath away has to be Sofia Santos. As well as being my heroine, she had a hard ride putting up with Stanton’s idiosyncrasies. For me Rachel, if anyone in this incredibly well plotted out story deserves kudos, it is she. I have no words to describe such a generously-hearted woman. Intelligent, no doubt about it. Ambitious, loyal to a tee and horrendously sexy. Stanton, you don’t deserve her!

Quotes ~ Stanton: ‘’I don’t think I should be held responsible for bets I made under duress.’’

Sophia: ‘’What possible duress were you under?’’

Stanton: ‘’You underestimate the power of your miraculous tits. They were in my face – thinking clearly was not possible.’’

Rachel: Wow, don’t go any further. My recommendation is to one-click on this awesomely hot, sizzling, get your fan ready with batteries fully charged read!

Sharon: Lol! To sum up the read Rachel isn’t easy as we’re talking about a love triangle of sorts which imply a hell of a lot of twists and turns that might not be everyone’s cuppa. Nevertheless, it was ours and we loved the secondary characters. Oh yes, we’re going to meet up with them as we have a series here.

Rachel: I’m so looking forward to more bellyaching laugh out loud instalments Sharon. Yes, you are quite correct in saying that Overruled could have opened a can of worms for many. Ms Chase never lets us down though. Her style of writing doesn’t enter discussion and the only word we have to describe this awesome read is simply… BRAVO!

By day, Emma Chase is a devoted wife and mother of two who resides in a small, rural town in New Jersey. By night she is a keyboard crusader, toiling away the hours to bring her colorful characters and their endless antics to life. She has a long standing love/hate relationship with caffeine.

Emma is an avid reader. Before her children were born she was known to consume whole books in a single day. Writing has also always been a passion and with the 2013 release of her debut romantic comedy, Tangled, the ability to now call herself an author is nothing less than a dream come true.
