Rebel and Sophia’s story.
The first of a three part series. This novel contains a small snippet which has already been released in the Owned: An Alpha Anthology, however it is followed by a full story installment.
Sometimes, you don’t mean to become another person. Sometimes the choice is made for you, and pretending is the only thing that keeps you going. When Alexis Romera is taken and her kidnappers find her fake ID in her purse, she must become Sophia in order to keep her family safe. Revealing her real identity to the man she’s sold to would be easy enough, but can she trust him? Hell bent on revenging the murder of his uncle, Rebel doesn’t seem all that interested in playing things safe.
In fact, nothing about the secretive, dark and brooding MC president seems safe at all.
What do you do when the man who raised you is murdered, and the only witness is kidnapped girl who’s being sold as a sex slave? You buy her, of course. As president to the most powerful motorcycle club in America, Rebel isn’t lacking in power. There are strings the man can pull, and entire criminal organisations and corporate businesses alike would fall to their knees. However, along with such power comes intense interest. The DEA have their eye fixed solely on the MC…and they’re just waiting for Rebel to trip up.
Getting Sophia to testify is the only way to bring the Los Oscuros cartel down. The beautiful, dark haired, dark eyed woman is belligerent and uncooperative and unlikely to bend to his will, but Rebel has a few tricks up his sleeve to make her compliant–he’ll charm her until she’s bending over backwards to please him.
Of course, falling for her might cause a few hiccups along the way…
“It’s time for you to tell me your name.” She arches an eyebrow at me. I can just imagine her getting them waxed in some fancy fucking boutique beauty parlor in Seattle, run by Asian hipsters with shaved undercuts and thick glasses. She seems like the type. “Why do you want to know?” she asks, cockiness filling her voice.
“I’m asking because I need something to call you. And if you don’t tell me your name, I’m going to be forced to call you One Eighty-One. And I’m guessing you won’t like being called One Eighty-One.”
“Why would you call me that?”
Because that’s the reference Hector Ramirez gave you when you uploaded your picture onto his skin site. Hector tags his girls chronologically. The first girl he sold was number one. The fifty-third girl he sold was tagged fifty-three. Using that logic, guess how many girls he sold before he tagged you one eight one?”
“So a hundred and eighty other women came before me?” She looks like she’s going to throw up.
“Exactly. And he hasn’t been caught. The police haven’t raided his place out there in the desert. No one has reported his website. No one came to rescue the one hundred and eighty other girls who came before you, and no one is coming for you, either. So if you want reminding of that every single time I call you one eight—“
“Sophia!” She screws her eyes shut, clenching her jaw. “My name is fucking Sophia, motherfucker.” She spits out the words like they’re poison. When she looks at me again, I can see the fury burning in the dark depths of her dark brown eyes. She comes alive when she’s angry. A thrill of adrenalin stabs through me, sending mixed signals to my cock; provoking such a violent reaction from her is provoking an entirely different reaction from me. For the first time, I see her. Fucking Sophia. I don’t see her as a means to an end—a potential way to take down the bastard who killed my uncle. I see her. I see her as a woman, and she is beautiful.
“Alright, Sophia. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
KINDLE FRIENDS FOREVER 5 star review by Sharon Thérèse Nuttall
To give you some idea about how much the first part in the Dead Man’s Ink series affected me is indescribably agonising. Imagine the strongest and most profane words being shouted at a brick wall when I read the last paragraph in this extremely well written and highly descriptive book. My hands fisted. Yeah, I wanted to punch someone! And just as well it’s someone inside this story because otherwise I would be in real trouble. You’ll find out who I’m talking about when you read this book which left me completely and utterly spent. After reading it in two sittings, my Kindle didn’t go flying across the room since I want… no… I need to read the follow up like yesterday!
Ms. Hart, author extraordinaire, is well-known for bringing together characters who you’ll love to hate and hate to love! And she’s done it again. So get ready to lose your temper with the baddies. Get ready to swoon over the goodies, and prepare yourselves for a rough ride in a plot that has more twists and turns than the worst mountain road you’ve ever driven on.
The prologue opened my appetite for more and as I read on, I discovered Alexis Romera is the kind of gal I’d love my son to bring home! A good daughter to loving parents who worry about her well-being and who also has a solid relationship with her younger sibling. Everything appears to be tickety-boo for this studious lass. Beautiful but not at all full of herself. Just a normal young woman.
The author didn’t waste time throwing us into a plot which thickens by the minute. First chapter, but not in first gear! Nothing like being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And this is what happened to Alexis. Between a rock and hard place, her what should have been a rosy future most certainly takes a turn for the worst. But the Widow Makers’ MC president has an interest in helping out this damsel in distress. Hmmm, why you may ask! She has witnessed the murder of his uncle. His strong ties demand justice and he will get it come hell or high water. For one reason or another, Alexis and Rebels’s nemesis is in this story is without a doubt, the head of the Los Oscuros cartel.
This quote by Alexis is so apt: ” I am reminded of a poem, a famous one by Dylan Thomas”
Rebel. One minute I adored him, the next, I found him the most incomprehensible man on earth and would have happily grabbed him by the throat. Obviously, I was bewildered by him constantly blowing hot and cold. This man of many facets is front-running a tattoo business to cover up all sorts of unimaginable illegal deals; however, he has his limits. He does not tolerate the sex trade. And this is where confusion for the reader sets in. Believe you me; you will see why. I. Love. Him! My new book lover is Louis James Aubertin the third! Rebel is not proud of his family name. His father is a despot of the first degree who not only abuses his power in the political world, but is also the culprit for making his drop-dead gorgeous son become the man he is today. They are morally like chalk and cheese; nevertheless, they are both have something in common. Cynical, cold and heartless. My heart bled for Rebel. The cruel hand he has been been paid with has turned him into a killer! Even though his moves are justified and calculated, the biggest problem he has is convincing Sofia to testify against her abductors. Sofia! Who on earth is she? Why is this young woman with a faithfully generous soul for protecting her family so against Rebel’s wishes and not willing to comply? Will she heed? Read the story… it will be revealed! By goodness me, to say that this plot is well thought out is honestly an understatement.
Good story-lines need strong secondary characters. They abound. Some of them, no names to be disclosed, were the cause of my agony. I sincerely hope that Cade, Rebel’s best mate will show up in the next instalment of this incredible series. Not only that, the author’s brilliant penmanship has also made us wait by titillatingly us with a sexual build up between the two protagonists resulting in an explosively hot scene in the most inopportune moment.
A quick note to the author. I blame you for two sleepless nights. You are a storyteller par excellence. So to sum up this read only has one word. BRAVO!
This book is not a standalone. Even though the ‘Blood and Roses Series’ is intertwined in a very laid-back manner, it is not necessary to read it. However, I would if I were you!
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Callie has experienced many changes throughout her life, and gone through many ups and downs that have all worked towards shaping and molding her into the person she is today: fun loving, active, social, and hard working. The only thing that has remained a constant throughout her life is writing. Creating characters who will tear your conscience in two is a favorite pastime of Callie’s. There are few real saints and sinners in her books; more often, the denizens of her stories are all very human. Broken, flawed, and always with the potential for redemption.
Despite the subject matter being markedly hot and heavy in comparison to the stories she wrote in elementary school, there will always be an element of fairytale to her work.
