I was looking forward to reading Kyland as I am a massive fan of the previous works of this author. I had no idea what this story was about, with no synopsis or any clue to the plot.

This is a story told from a dual point of view of Tenleigh Falyn and Kyland Barrett. It starts off when they are seventeen years old living in a poverty stricken coal mining town. They are both striving at school to win the college scholarship from the local coal mining company which only one person can win.

Quote: “Do you know how f***ing rare it is for people like us to get out from under the poverty of a place like this? You have a chance. Take it.”

Tenleigh lives with her elder sister, Marlo and mentally ill mother. She desperately wants to escape the struggles of her life. Kyland has lived through loneliness, starvation and heart-breaking events. Kyland and Tenleigh get to know each other; however, they are well aware of the strong competitive streak between them and conscious of the fact that there is only going be one victor for the grant.

Quote: “How are you going to win the scholarship when I’m going to win the scholarship?”

They secretly don’t want to form any attachments as one will be leaving town and the other will be left behind. It seems to be easier said than done because they become extremely close.

Quote: “He wasn’t the only one with plans to leave here. Why did he even have to register on my radar? God, I hated him.”

This is a story of a deep love, sacrifice and heartbreak. Hope, pain and forgiveness. It is a powerful heart-rending story with some very explicitly described hot scenes. I was totally engrossed and could not put this read down for the life of me! Kyland is definitely a different book boyfriend to what we are normally used to showing selflessness, strength and courage. What I mainly love is the slow build up which others may not. This style of telling the story which the author has used only made me more desperate to know what would happen to them. Would their lives always be a struggle?

Quote: “Love doesn’t keep anyone alive. Food does. Warmth does.”

The story does not stay completely with them as teenagers. We get to see what transpires after their college years and an epilogue that is so so sweet. I liked all the side characters and at times, my emotions were all over the place.

Quote: “God, what did you do? Go to hell. I do. Every day. For you.”

I had tears for some of the powerful dialogue and certain scenes, but there were also some very funny moments, too. The story shows how people with absolutely nothing make the best of what they are faced with, and it also shows money does not buy happiness. I highly recommend this book and I would definitely put my hand on my heart and say this is going to be as successful as Archer’s voice. Any fan of Mia’s would know what an amazing story that was. I certainly look forward to what stories Mia writes in the future.

One of my favourite quotes: “I can’t resist you. I tried. I really did.”
